Help! my subscription did not automatically renew and I wasn’t notified. I didn’t downgrade it

my 1-year subscription was due to renew soon. i got an email saying ‘your subscription has been renewed’. didn’t bother to check my card payments or account because i thought it was all good

well 2 weeks later i lost VPN Plus access out of the blue and got an email saying ‘your plan was downgraded to free’

They sent an invoice on the same day as the ‘subscription has been renewed’ email that says ‘paid’, but at the bottom it says ‘this amount was written off (2 weeks later)’. My credit card was never charged and my bank didn’t notify me about pending charges

customer support has been painfully slow in answering back and doesn’t answer all the questions I send in one email. They said I would have been sent an email reminder that my account would be downgraded. I didn’t receive one

Then they contacted me back and confirmed I wasn’t sent that email after all, because as it turns out the auto-pay option was disabled, and you only get a downgrade warning if your payment method is attempting to be charged. Then they advised me to keep auto-pay enabled from now on

But the thing is, I never disabled auto-pay or auto-renew to begin with. I didn’t even know you could do that, I can’t find the option for it. I didn’t cancel my subscription/downgrade in the past year at all. I also didn’t change payment methods or run out of funds

Any idea what’s happening here?

Discussion Considering ProtonVPN after my surfshark subscription expires in Nov.

Just curious about your experience using Proton in the US. I'm in the southeast, if that even matters. I'm considering the 2-year option, but I want to gather a few recent experiences/reviews before I fully commit.

Help! Proton updated itself and stopped working

Anyone else having problems with this? After updating, it never connects, just runs an eternal connecting wheel and blocks me from using the internet entirely. Tried shutting it down, logging out completely, and restarting the computer and it worked briefly, but when I came back a few hours later it had disconnected and gone back to constantly trying to connect. Uninstalled and reinstalled, but still had the same problem. Not seeing anything about this on their support page. Any advice?

Discussion Proton VPN 4.x/5.x won't work on debloated Windows 10 IoT LTSC

Hi,

I use heavily customized Windows 10 IoT LTSC installations (NTLite, debloating, etc.). Proton VPN 3.5.3 was the last version that worked properly, but since connections from this version are no longer supported, I'm temporarily using WireGuard.

Newer Proton VPN versions (4.x/5.x) either won't launch, crash on startup, or get stuck before showing the login success screen.

Does anyone know which Windows components or dependencies the newer app requires? Could it be .NET, WebView2, specific Windows services, or something else removed during debloating?

It would be helpful if Proton published a list of required runtimes and system components.

Thank you.

Edit : as always, in reddit, I need to point out that the answer to my question is not "just use normal windows."
the question is about the runtimes, framework and components protonvpn used to code their client.

Help! Proton VPN download is extremely slow despite 500 Mbps internet (debloated Windows)

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm having a weird issue downloading Proton VPN on my PC and can't figure out what's causing it.

I have a 500 Mbps internet connection, and Speedtest confirms that I'm getting the expected speeds. I'm connected via Ethernet, and my PC is more than capable of handling normal downloads.

However, when downloading Proton VPN through my browser (I've tried both Microsoft Edge and Brave), the download speed drops to around 3 KB/s. The Speedtest itself runs at around 500 Mbps, and the test download completed in seconds, so my internet connection doesn't seem to be the problem.

A few details about my setup:

  • Windows 10/11 debloated version
  • Intel Core i5-9600K
  • Wired Ethernet connection
  • 500 Mbps internet
  • Tried both Microsoft Edge and Brave
  • The issue seems to affect the Proton VPN download specifically

Since I'm running a debloated version of Windows, I'm wondering if a removed Windows component, disabled service, firewall setting, or some other modification could be causing this.

Has anyone experienced something similar or knows what I should check? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks!

Discussion 1/5 Servers Work on Linux

Every time I want to use Proton on Linux I need to go into the client and manually try servers one-by-one until one of them works.

For the other 4/5 servers, packets are just constantly dropping. Won't even connect to the internet. Not to mention auto-connect always seems to pick the worst one.

I'm using the GUI app but I've had similar problems with the cli as well.

Anyone else having this problem?

Help! Speed issues with German servers

Since several months, I often have issues while ProtonVPN is connected to servers in Germany. Establishing a connecting takes 20-30 seconds and when done, speed is often quite slow (still usable though). My ISP is Telekom in Germany, often known for having peering issues. When I connect to a ProtonVPN server in Switzerland (geographically not further away from me than Frankfurt), all issues are gone and the VPN works like a charm. Is there the possibility german Telekom is having a bad peering to the german Proton servers, but good peering to Swiss servers? And if so, is there anything I can do about it?
