Is there a way to import Google Earth's historical imagery into QGIS as WMS/WMTS or XYZ layers? I'm building a 300-year timeline of my hometown.
Hi everyone!
I'm working on a personal historical cartography project about Centallo, a small town in Piedmont, northern Italy, using QGIS.
My goal is to create something similar to Google Earth's historical imagery timeline, but extending much further into the past by combining different cartographic sources.
So far, I've been collecting and georeferencing:
- Historical military aerial photographs, including imagery from the 1970s and 1980s.
- Regional orthophotos provided by the Piedmont Region, including imagery from the 1980s–1990s and more recent years.
- Historical cadastral maps, including Napoleonic-era maps from the early 1800s and late 19th-century surveys.
- Old topographic maps, historical surveys, and other archival cartographic material.
The idea is to have all these sources aligned in QGIS, allowing me to switch between different years and observe how the landscape, roads, buildings, agricultural fields, and waterways have changed over time.
Here's my problem:
Google Earth Pro has a fantastic archive of historical satellite and aerial imagery, with multiple dates available for my area.
If I could integrate those historical images into QGIS, I could potentially almost double the number of time periods represented in my project.
Ideally, I'd like to access each historical imagery date as a separate raster layer, similar to how WMS, WMTS, or XYZ tile services work, without manually exporting and georeferencing everything.
What I've found so far:
The only practical workaround I've identified is:
- Open Google Earth Pro and select a historical imagery date.
- Export the view as a high-resolution image (up to 8K).
- Import the image into QGIS.
- Georeference it manually.
- Repeat the process for every date and every section of my municipality.
Unfortunately, covering the entire municipality at a useful resolution, across all available dates, could take weeks of repetitive work.
My questions:
- Is there any supported way to access Google Earth's historical imagery directly in QGIS, perhaps through an API, WMS/WMTS, XYZ tiles, or another method?
- Can historical imagery be requested for a specific date, rather than just displaying the current Google Satellite basemap?
- If direct access isn't possible, is there a more efficient workflow for importing and georeferencing multiple images without repeating the process manually?
- Are there alternative services or archives offering comparable high-resolution historical imagery for Europe, particularly Italy, with GIS-compatible access?
- I'm also interested in understanding the licensing limitations. Is there a legitimate way to integrate this imagery into a personal, non-commercial historical research project?
I'm not trying to redistribute Google's imagery or create a commercial service. I'm mainly interested in finding a sustainable and legally permitted way to compare different historical periods in my local GIS project.
I know this is quite a specific request, but I imagine other people working with historical cartography, landscape evolution, or urban development might have encountered the same problem.
Any suggestions, tools, plugins, or alternative workflows would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
