RPI Mathematics Professor John Mitchell Needs a Kidney Donor

Professor John Mitchell has been teaching mathematics at RPI since 1988, and he's currently looking for a living kidney donor.

After developing a rare autoimmune disease, he suffered kidney failure and spent over four years on dialysis. He received a kidney transplant in 2023, but unfortunately, the transplanted kidney failed less than two years later.

He is now back on daily dialysis and faces an estimated five-year wait for another deceased-donor kidney.

He's written about his situation here:

https://mitchjrpi.github.io/transplant.html

If you or someone you know might be interested in becoming a living donor, you can contact Albany Medical Center's Transplant Center at 518-262-5614.

Even if you can't donate, sharing this with RPI alumni, friends, and family could help his story reach someone who can.

I thought the RPI community should know.

My group is currently touring 4 bedroom apartments with 1-2 bathrooms, close to campus, fully furnished, and between 400-700 per month rent.

Everyone in my group is clean and organized. We are looking for another clean organized person to join us while we tour and decide which apartment to lease.

Please dm me if interested. Even if my group is full, I can connect you with other clean people.

RPI Family Weekend Orchestra Concert

Can someone tell the name and composer of the first piece the orchestra played, that began with the oboe solo? I didn’t get a program and don’t believe the conductor announced it. And bravo, outstanding playing all around!

Thanks in advance!

So, in short, I haven't been to my engineering processes since the beginning of the year lol. Should I just drop it before Nov 2nd or can I still earn enough for a passing grade. Thanks.

Easiest 4000 level math/ecse course?

Hey all, I'm a senior CSE/EE dual, my last semester should be this Spring. That semester I'm going to have to finish my HASS pathway, do my capstone, do my math/sci elective, and my technical elective (The math/sci/engineering 4000 lvl class).

I don't know what to pick for my TE, do you guys know which of the math/engineering 4000 level classes are easiest? I'm thinking Fundamentals of Geometry or Robotics 1 or some other ecse course. Do you guys have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any info you've got!

I lost my bicycle and dunno where to find it

I was gone for the weekend and notice my bicycle (normally tucked around Cary Hall) go missing. It was a black giant bike with a silver helmet.

I'm going to contact public safety and check around the union, but I'm pessimistic in finding things here because I lost my water bottle at the Robinson Swimming pool the other day (navy blue 24 fl oz Hydro Flask)

Data on Architecture Exam Pass Rates

So, RPI does relatively well here for its School of Architecture, which is good in this era of outcomes based rankings. The site gives pass rates by university and division. In 2025, few universities or colleges had above average pass rates in all the divisions with RPI being one of them.

Physics 2 and Chem 1 together?

Is managing two lab sciences in a semester excessively difficult? Also plan to do CAD and 2 other courses for a total of 16 or 17 credits.

Question MANE-4xxx Options for Technical Elective I

Hi, I was looking to take my 1st Technical Elective next semester, and I have to pick a 4000-level or higher course in the MANE department, and it has to be 3 credit hours or less.

I've narrowed it down to:

MANE-4080 Propulsion Systems

MANE-4140 Intro to Computational Fluid Dynamics

MANE-4170 Machine Dynamics

MANE-4520 Mechatronics

MANE-4560 Robotics I (AKA Manipulator Kinematics & Dynamics)

MANE-4640 Analysis of Manufacturing Processes

I'm unsure I'll use Propulsion in my career (MechE that doesn't want to build missiles), but I kept it in anyways.

I'm looking to take MATH-4800 and I've already taken NuMPE and Intro to CS so I'm not sure I want another computational course. Robotics interests me so I think I'd enjoy Mechatronics or Robotics, but I'm unsure about how employable either of those are.

Machine Dynamics I'm told is similar to Engr Dynamics, and I did pretty well in that course, so maybe I'll enjoy it, but the jobs I'm looking to get into don't seem to need heavy machine design/analysis experience.

Manufacturing seems interesting, and I might end up working in manufacturing as a MechE, but I was looking to go more into thermal stuff (which bummed me out so much that Advanced Heat Transfer wasn't being offered).

Unfortunately I can't do URP for this, and I can't take 4 credit hours due to scheduling conflicts.

Any advice for what would be a cool/interesting class would be appreciated!

Housing Looking for a female roommate

My roommate and I are looking for a female roommate interested in joining us for the June 1, 2027 – May 31, 2028 lease year!

One of our current roommates will be moving out, and our landlord is allowing us to renew our lease with a new tenant.

The apartment is located on 12th Street, just about less than a 5 minute walk to campus. It’s a 3 bed, 3 bath apartment so you’ll have your own room and bathroom!

Details:
- Rent: $625/month per person ($1,875 total, split three ways)
- Lease: June 1, 2027 – May 31, 2028
- Private bedroom in a shared apartment
- Location: 12th Street

Our landlord has given us until November 6, 2026 to renew, so we’re hoping to find someone before then!

If you’re interested or have any questions, feel free to DM me! I’d be happy to share more information, photos, or arrange a time for you to see the apartment.
