When did Russian Imperial elite begin to feel closer to France than to Germany?
Tsar Alexander III wanted to renew the Reinsurance Treaty, but William II refused. So Russia moved closer to France.
But I've read that Alexander would still have preferred to reestablish the bond with Germany as long as 1893; and that his Foreign Minister Nikolaj Girs, who was in power until 1895, was strongly pro-German. In April 1895 the Triple Intervention showed that Russia was still closer to Germany than to France
But, when Nicholas II signed the Treaty of Bjorko in 1905, Foreign Minister Lamsdorf forced him to renounce to the treaty.
So my question is: when did Russia (as a State) definitely sided with France, considering that the situation of 1895 was different from that of 1905? When did the idea of an alliance with Germany become completely unthinkable?
