Headed to Sapporo, what winter gear do I need?

I’ve been on a long trip, (currently in Italy) and packed light. I see it’s rainy and cold in Sapporo, what gear do you recommend I need to survive 5 days there before heading to Sendai, Tokyo, Yamanakako, Kyoto/Osaka, Hiroshima for the rest of my trip.

I will be doing lots of city exploring, but will also want to do some light hiking.

I currently have a light rain jacket, hiking pants, running shoes, umbrella.

Do you think I’ll need a heavy rain jacket, puffer jacket, or both? Rain coat, gloves, beanie, etc.

I’ll be in Sapporo 10/31-11/5.

[Giveaway] Free JR Tower Observatory ticket (Expires Nov 11, 2026)

Hey r/Sapporo, I have a spare ticket for the JR Tower Observatory (T38) because I ended up using my Hokkaido Fun Pass for entry instead. The ticket is valid until November 11, 2026, so I would love to give it away to someone who can actually put it to good use. Just drop a comment or send me a DM if you want it, and we can figure out how to transfer it to you!

Nightlife for 30M foreigner in early december

Hi, I will be solo traveling in Sapporo for 3 nights next december and I was wondering how is nightlife this time of the year.

Are the izakayas, bars and clubs foreign friendly?

Is it easy to connect to locals or other tourists?

Any tips or recommendations?

Thanks!

Snowboard jejej

Hi everyone!

The cold is starting to arrive here in Sapporo, and a friend and I are planning to start snowboarding together this season. I’m a complete beginner, while my friend already has some experience, so I’d love to find someone who’s also a beginner to join us and keep me company while we learn!

We’re hoping to go fairly often throughout the winter, so if you’re interested, feel free to send me a message.

Thank youuu!

Lily of the Valley

Lily of the Valley is one of my favorite flowers and I just found out that it is actually Sapporo's official city flower! Does anyone have any idea if there are any places that sell Lily of the Valley themed merchandise anywhere? like a keychain or something? I have been to Hokkaido before and remember seeing a lot of Lavender-themed souvenirs but not Lily of the Valley. I know it's a summer flower and we will be there in December, but I'm curious!

a hail fishing mary

hi all,

i might get some dislike and im not trying to undercut anyone. if not allowed i understand.

im only in hokkaido until wednesday and on tuesday, i have a tentative plan, but can change if this post is successful. im an avid fly angler from the states & i would love to catch at least one hokkaido fish (native ideally) but im dumb and didnt book any guides ahead of time because i didnt have a plan coming here. none of the shops have contacted me back.

i just want a fishing buddy. not a guide. i know how to fish. i know how to act in bear country. i know what the dangers of river use in the cold can bring. i’m first aid trained. happy to chat! this is what im thinking- an early start to get an am bite-i’ll buy us breakfast/lunch/dinner/gas (maybe a beer or two if you drink-i don’t really but this occasion would encourage me to do so.

i tenkara too. small creeks, bigger creeks, just some water to cast a line. i don’t have any equipment but would buy some flies the night before if i have time.

if not, sapporo and greater hokkaido is a lovely place and thank you having me-i’ll be back again with my rod, some more time and my bike for a longer adventure. cheers!

Noboribetsu Hell Valley

Hi all,
How do I get from JR Noboribetsu Station to Hell Valley (Jigokudani)?
I'm taking the Hokuto limited express to Noboribetsu Station. What's the best way to get from the station to Hell Valley?

Japanese translation:
JR登別駅から地獄谷への行き方
特急北斗で登別駅まで行く予定です。駅から地獄谷へはどうやって行くのが一番いいですか?

Thank you.

tips for first timers?

hello all! i'll be staying in sapporo for the first week of february next year for snow miku 2027. it's not my first time in japan but it is my first time being there alone and i've never been to sapporo. i'd appreciate if people that live in sapporo or have visited before provided any tips or things i should know! i'm only 19 and i've never traveled by myself so truthfully i'm very nervous...

also, if anyone has stayed at Grand Hostel LDK Sapporo? It wasn't my first choice but I'm on a budget. is there anything I should know about staying in hostels in japan as a foreigner?

thank you!

Snow fell overnight in the Nakayama Pass, between Jozankei and Niseko. It won't be long now until the first snow starts falling in Sapporo. Enjoy the fall colors while you can!

Hello from Italy! Looking to get to know people and everyday life in Hokkaido

Hi everyone!

I’m new here. I’m from Italy, and I recently started studying Japanese. I’m currently considering taking a trip to Hokkaido, I’m also considering the possibility of moving there someday in the future.

I’ve always loved cooler climates and places surrounded by nature, and I’ve had a genuine interest in Japanese culture and traditions for many years. I have quite a few hobbies, including anime, manga, tabletop RPGs, digital drawing, and sumi-e. I’m also very interested in kintsugi.

I also enjoy martial arts, especially Kendo and Iaido, and I play a few musical instruments.

I’d really like to meet people from the area, hopefully make some new friends, learn more about everyday life in Hokkaido, and at the same time have the opportunity to improve my Japanese.

Moving to Japan is only a possibility I’m considering for the future, so for now I’d simply like to get to know the area and the people who live there a little better.

Thanks everyone in advance!

Hi All,
We’re travelling to Sapporo in January and I’d like to get an idea of car transfer companies that offer car seat hire for the kids as well. There will be 3 children, 4 adults and a lot of luggage.
Any suggestions?

Sapporo to Hakodate: Hotel & Onsen Recommendations

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi all - currently in the process of planning Japan trip that’ll take me from Sapporo to Tokyo in December.

For the Hokkaido part of the trip, want to pick some special hotels and impressive experiences (especially Onsen). Any recommendations?

Hotel KAI Poroto looks great - also thought Tsuruga Ao no Za and Bourou Lake Toya could be good.

A lot of the Google / AI-driven recommendations that are being spat out feel quite stuffy and dated, rather than luxurious and special.

Any tips would be hugely appreciat
