Pedagogy and Best Practices My students are too low level for Amplify Science

I teach in an urban, Title 1 where Math proficiency is 13% and average reading level is 3rd grade in the 8th. Nearly all students lack the foundational knowledge of 3rd and 4th grade. As an example, this plays out in 75% of my students thinking oxygen is a solid at room temperature. They can't read a table of values to save their lives. Nearly half of each class is also ELL.

Yet, my district uses Amplify.

Amplify which gives no time to teach new vocabulary it thinks native speakers should know. Amplify which assumes they know basic things like the order of planets in the solar system and which ones are bigger than others. Amplify which asks students to make inquiry based thoughts using this background knowledge.

It's such a disaster I had to take them off and go to direct instruction (vastly more work for me). They sometimes get the science now and that's a win from never getting the science.

TLDR: Have you had to take students off Amplify or a scripted curriculum for your own sanity?
