I volunteer at a cat shelter. There is a cat there, Chata (10), who is stress grooming herself naked. She is a shy but sweet orange tabby.
I still cry for Clark everyday. It's so hard and I miss him so much. My other cat misses him too and is constantly meowing for him. Even though I would have liked to wait a little longer, I decided to adopt Chata to ease my other cat's anxiety. It would also be nice to have a more social cat around.
So i decided to get Chata. She couldn't stay in that cage.
I applied for her and on the application it asked for past cats. I wrote that I had Clark and he was gone.
The owner proceeded to grill me. I grew up in an abusive family, so I shut down. I told her I didn't want to talk about it, but she walked all over my boundary. My husband and I ended up leaving and I sobbed for days.
A week goes by and I haven't heard anything. So I ask another adoption coordinator about Chata. The owner wants to speak with me again. I say okay.
During the 1 hour and 45 minute integration, she told me that:
I'm a sheep who doesn't question vet advice
I should have seen this specific vet (I took him to a specialist in a nice vet hospital)
That the specialist I talked to lied to me about how a procedure was done
How I was quick to euthanize
How Clark was treatable and that I didn't go the extra mile
That she thinks as soon as Chata gets sick that I'll euthanize her.
That I should have asked her about Clark's illness
I told her:
she is speaking in hypotheticals
Would, should, and could are not productive arguments
She wasn't there
Why would I euthanize Chata?
I did the best I could with the information I had
That she was being mean
I should mention that she sometimes keeps cats alive who are miserable and in pain just because they are eating.
I was sobbing. She knew she was taking my peace away. She's convinced me that I could have done something more for my beloved Clark. I miss him so much and I am gutted at the thought that I could have done more.
He never got to skin and bones. Maybe I should have held on that long? I don't know. He was having more bad days than good. She told me I could have changed that.
The family and friends I have talked to about this are angry at her. My husband is angry. He says we did the right thing. He says I can blame him because he didn't cancel the appointment when I begged him to.
I can only blame myself, though. I wish I would have tried harder. I miss him so much. I would have done anything for him. The thought that I was so close to 'curing' him but didn't do it is eating me alive.
He had either ibs or lymphoma. The vet said that she wouldn't recommend the biopsy because of his age and how invasive it was. She gave us a steroid that gave us two more months with him and then he declined quickly.
The owner said the biopsy wasn't invasive, that that vet lied, and that I need to think for myself.
I feel like I gave up on my best friend in the whole world.
How do I find peace? Was Chata worth the price I paid?
EDIT: Thank you all so much for your kind words. You've brought peace to my heart and I can't thank you enough for that. I know you all have faced The Decision with your senior babies. Reading your responses, I'm glad I opted to not go through with the biopsy. Sounds like the vet was right about needing to cut him open. I didn't want him to be in pain from a surgical site and his guts. I loved him too much.
I.... I'll always miss him and wish I had just one more day... You all understand. Forever isn't long enough.
