Question Speaking Hindi Is Crime?

I Have grown in an army cantt and studied in army schools which are hindi and english medium... All my friends in my life spoke hindi, my parents used to speak Hindi with me as we lived in cantt every parent used to do the same, I am 20yrs old and still speak in Hindi with them....

But whenever I face new strangers, new friends I am comfortable in speaking Punjabi.

But I can't do that with my cousins , parants and friends with whom I only spoke in Hindi since I was child.....

So my uncle confronted me that I talk in Hindi, so I got in an argument with him.

Are sikhs only allowed to speak in Punjabi???

Question Wearing a turban and eyeglasses together

I have been struggling with this for a while. I wear powered glasses over my turban and most of the days my ears hurt real bad because of that.
The temple tips sit on my ear and they put pressure and top-back of my ear hurts after a few hours
And then nose pads leave a deep mark on my nose since the turban is tight

I have tried different turban variations and different glasses - if anyone has faced a similar issue and was able to solve for it. Please suggest.

Question How do I wear a helmet..?

18M, I've been riding bikes since I was 15. I recently bought a triumph Speed 400. A distant relative of mine was in a crash and ofc ondi pag onanu bacho nhi pai, te onandi on spot death hogayi si.

I've been looking for different hairstyles, different ways to set my hair on my head so that I can comfortably wear a helmet. But I have hair that is too long, too thick, and too volumous.

Since I've been riding for 3years without a helmet. Ik the problems I'm facing without a helmet:

Safety, wind blast, rain drops, cold wind, random fking insects hitting my face, dust n debris, etc. Sure there are balaclavas and other things to help from this... But layering them, then putting glasses on, and yet have no safety at all... Meh.

I really need to somehow manage my hair. Should I shorten it? I mean keep it long but reduce the volume and slightly shorten it? My hair literally reaches my waist.

As much as i respect my own religion n culture. I firmly believe that keeping hair this long in the 21st century..... It's extremely impractical in every single way.

Appreciate all the advice i can get! ✌️

Question How does Sikhi help us deal with a longing we cannot quite understand?

I've been experiencing a strange kind of emotional longing lately, and I'd genuinely appreciate the perspectives of fellow Sikhs especially those who have spent time reflecting on Gurbani

For the past few days, I've found myself feeling deeply attached to a memory from my past. It's not necessarily about romance but rather a feeling of missing someone, a particular period of life, and the possibility of experiencing something meaningful again.

I keep imagining a future in which I might somehow reconnect with a person from my past. Those thoughts bring me a sense of peace, but they also leave me feeling sad because I have no idea whether such a reunion will ever happen.

What's been particularly difficult is that these thoughts have become almost constant. I find myself waking up with them and going to sleep with them still on my mind. I've been struggling to enjoy the present and understand why something from the past has affected me so deeply.

From a Sikh perspective, I've been reflecting on moh, hukam, and the relationship between longing and inner peace.

I know that Sikhi doesn't teach us to become emotionless. But how do we distinguish between appreciating something meaningful and becoming attached to it? How does one accept Hukam while still having hopes and wishes for the future?

And perhaps most importantly, how do we bring our minds back to the present when they keep returning to something we cannot control?

Im not looking for a simplistic answer or someone to tell me to just move on. I'd genuinely appreciate thoughtful perspectives from Gurbani, Sikh philosophy, or personal experiences.

Identifying two figures in a forgotten Sikh painting in the Asian Art Museum’s collection entitled ‘Surjan Singh and his son Trilok Singh’ (Object number: 1998.100).

I have conducted research on this Sikh painting and I believe I have identified the figures depicted in the painting in-question who have until now not been identified apart from their names. Their specific historical identity within the Sikh nobility has remained largely uncontextualized.

The museum website notes that the depicted figures are unknown apart from their names, Surjan Singh and Trilok Singh, and suggest they may have been petty rulers. However, the truth is more fascinating.

In the second image, the verso of the painting is displayed, which reveals two inscriptions. The bottom one is in English and reveals no new information. However, the top one is written in Larivaar (scriptio continua) Gurmukhi script (usually employed for the Panjabi language), which provides crucial details missing from the bottom English inscription, and reads as follows: “Sarkar Badhi Tikka Sri Sahib Surjan Singh Tirlok Singh Ji Father & Son sitting together” - This is really insightful as the words “Sarkar Badhi” are used, which were a sub-category of a group of Sikhs known as the Anandpuri Sodhis.

This allows us to identify the figures depicted as two members of the Anandpuri Sodhis. They came to prominence during the 18th century under four brothers (named Nahar Singh, Udai Singh, Khem Singh, and Chaur Singh) whose descendants are known respectively as the baṛī (eldest, or badhi depending on transliteration method), dusrī (second), tīsrī (third), & chauthī (fourth) sections (sarkārs) of the Anandpuri Sodhis. The verso inscription identifies the pair as belonging to the eldest branch. Fascinatingly, Sodhi Surjan Singh is a known historical figure and referenced in contemporary events, having played a role in the Battle of Anandpur (1812).

A cross-reference to an official, genealogical pedigree of the family published in ‘Chiefs and Families of Note in the Punjab’ (1890 and 1940 editions) confirms the pair being father and son: see ‘Surjan Singh, d. 1815’ and his listed son ‘Talok Singh, d. 1824.’

So it appears these two men were prominent members of the eldest branch of the Sodhi family of Anandpur, who claimed descent from the latter Sikh gurus. Surjan Singh was perhaps the most prominent of the Anandpuri Sodhis, being the son of the eldest founding branch. The descendants of the Sikh gurus were held in high-regard in 18th–19th century Panjabi Sikh society, it was quite common for them to have ordinarily royal titles/religious honourifics such as “Tikka Sri Sahib” (usually reserved from heir-apparent princes) to their proper names out of reverence.

So now these men have been given their identifies back. I have contacted the Asian Art Museum with this information, hopefully they can update their description for this painting.

Credit toward and thank you to ehmerapanjab for helping me read the Larivaar Gurmukhi inscription.

Discussion How beautifully Guru Ji uses duality to guide us towards non-duality

Something I find fascinating about Gurbani is how Guru Ji uses duality, the relationship between the devotee and the Lord, to guide us towards the realisation of oneness.

I feel this separation is actually necessary at first. We naturally perceive ourselves as separate from Vaheguru, so Guru Ji meets us at that level, using love, devotion and surrender to gradually dissolve that very separation.
Rather than simply telling us there is no separation, Guru Ji gives us a path through which we can realise it for ourselves.

I find this incredibly beautiful and feel it’s not discussed enough. Would love to hear others’ thoughts.

Question Question regarding Mukti?

I've been wondering whether people from other religions can attain Mukti according to Sikhi. For example, if someone is Hindu, Muslim, or Christian and sincerely follows their own faith without believing in the Sikh Gurus, can they still achieve liberation?

Gurbani states, “ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਭਾਈ ॥” (Ang 864), meaning “Without the Guru, liberation cannot be attained.”

Does “Guru” here refer specifically to the Sikh Gurus, or to the universal Divine wisdom of Waheguru? How would someone from another religion attain Mukti without following the Sikh Gurus?
