A transequatorial coronal hole is facing Earth. Enhanced solar wind could arrive in ~3 days

.

.

"(Paraphrased from NOAA SWPC's recent forecast discussion)

https://www.spaceweather.gov/products/forecast-discussion

Very low activity: a few B-class flares from Region 4560 near the west limb. Two CMEs off the NE limb aren't expected at Earth; no Earth-directed CMEs.

https://bsky.app/profile/vincentledvina.bsky.social/post/3mypomqxuuj2x

.

Solar wind was calm, slowing to ~350 km/s with no real southward Bz, and Earth stayed quiet. A small negative-polarity coronal hole stream plus possible glancing blows from Oct 21 CMEs could bring active conditions (Kp 4), maybe G1 (Kp 5), today. Quiet to unsettled Oct 26-27.

The fast solar wind from a negative polarity coronal hole is expected to reach Earth soon. Inside the fast wind, the Bz tends to swing north and south, which can bring several rounds of substorms at high latitudes.

Both Suns are from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. The yellow Sun is visible light, with sunspot regions labeled with NOAA's flare chances, and the purple Sun is extreme ultraviolet, with coronal holes outlined in green.

Here is how AR 4560 (highest flare chances) evolved over the last 24 hours, in visible light (top) and the magnetic field (bottom).

Kp is a 3-hour average of activity around the globe, so NOAA's Kp forecast can miss short substorms. Use real-time tools to catch them.

There not only an expansion of the bright material, but also new bright material appearing (center in the upper left). Maybe an astronomer can explain this. Material that only now gets shocked?

At this location, a portion of the Cerberus Fossae seems to intersect with the edge of a lava flow or other feature nearly perpendicular to the fossae. This could be a good location to investigate stratigraphic relationships and other aspects of the relationship of the fossae to the surrounding terrain.

🔭Hubble Interacting Galaxy Group Arp 194

Post image
26 Upvotes

21 April 2009

The Hubble Space Telescope photographed this peculiar system of galaxies known as Arp 194. This interacting group contains several galaxies, along with a "cosmic fountain" of stars, gas, and dust that stretches over 100,000 light-years. The upper component of Arp 194 appears as a haphazard collection of dusty spiral arms, bright blue star-forming regions, and at least two galaxy nuclei that appear to be connected and in the early stages of merging. A third, relatively normal, spiral galaxy appears off to the right.

The lower component of the galaxy group contains a single large spiral galaxy with its own blue star-forming regions. However, the most striking feature of this galaxy group is the impressive blue stream of material extending from the northern component. This "fountain" contains complexes of super star clusters, each one of which may contain dozens of individual young star clusters. The blue color is produced by the hot, massive stars that dominate the light in each cluster. Overall, the "fountain" contains many millions of stars. These young star clusters probably formed as a result of the interactions between the galaxies in the northern component of Arp 194.

The compression of gas involved in galaxy interactions can enhance the star-formation rate and give rise to brilliant bursts of star formation in merging systems. Hubble's resolution shows clearly that the stream of material lies in front of the southern component of Arp 194, as evidenced by the dust that is silhouetted around the star-cluster complexes. It is therefore not entirely clear whether the southern component actually interacts with the northern pair.

.

Over the past 19 years Hubble has taken dozens of exotic pictures of galaxies going "bump in the night" as they collide with each other and have a variety of close encounters of the galactic kind. Just when you thought these interactions couldn’t look any stranger, this image of a trio of galaxies, called Arp 194, looks as if of the galaxies has sprung a leak. The bright blue streamer is really a stretched spiral arm full of newborn blue stars. This typically happens when two galaxies interact and gravitationally tug at each other gravitationally.

Resembling a pair of owl's eyes, the two nuclei of the colliding galaxies can be seen in the process of merging at the upper left. The bizarre blue bridge of material extending out from the northern component looks as if it connects to a third galaxy but in reality this galaxy is in the background and not connected at all. Hubble's sharp view allows astronomers to try and sort out visually which are the foreground and background objects when galaxies, superficially, appear to overlap.

The blue "fountain" is the most striking feature of this galaxy troupe and it contains complexes of super star clusters that may have as many as dozens of individual young star clusters in them. It formed as a result of the interactions among the galaxies in the northern component of Arp 194. The gravitational forces involved in a galaxy interaction can enhance the star formation rate and give rise to brilliant bursts of star formation in merging systems.

Before Rubin Observatory’s First Look event, its engineering camera captured exquisite details of star formation taking place in the Seagull Nebula

October 22, 2026

Two years ago this month, NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s engineering test camera, named the LSST Commissioning Camera (ComCam), began capturing images of the sky to prepare for the revolutionary Legacy Survey of Space and Time, which began earlier this year. This image featuring the head of the Seagull Nebula was one of many ComCam images that led to the success of Rubin First Look and helped to document the observatory’s excellent performance.

.

Active star formation populates this image of the Seagull Nebula taken in Fall 2024 by NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s engineering test camera, known as the Commissioning Camera (ComCam). This image is being released today in recognition of the two-year anniversary of the beginning of engineering testing with ComCam.

ComCam’s work was an important step towards the ongoing Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). Collecting the data for this Seagull Nebula image provided an opportunity to test Rubin’s hardware and software systems, as well as the image processing pipelines that would later be used with the much larger images from the LSST Camera.

With a mosaic of nine CCD sensors and a total of 144 megapixels, ComCam covers an area in the sky about twice that of the full Moon. Over the seven-week ComCam engineering test campaign, from 24 October to 11 December 2024, approximately 16,000 exposures were acquired. Within the data collected is this image featuring IC 2177, a region recognizable as the head of the Seagull Nebula.

🛰️ Psyche mission Pedal to the Metal: NASA’s Psyche Heads Toward Asteroid Belt

Post image

A Hall thruster identical to those on NASA’s Psyche operates in a vacuum chamber at JPL during tests before the mission launched in 2023. The blue light is generated by xenon ions being accelerated through an electromagnetic field, which gives the spacecraft a gentle but steady acceleration. NASA/JPL-Caltech

.

With a successful Mars gravity assist in its rearview mirror, NASA’s Psyche spacecraft has fired up its thrusters and is accelerating to the metal-rich asteroid of the same name. During the first leg of its journey, following an October 2023 launch, the mission used its electric propulsion system intermittently to maneuver to the right place for harnessing Mars’ gravity for a propellant-saving speed boost and a slight trajectory change.

On Sept. 28, the spacecraft began to use its propulsion system nearly continuously, pausing just once each week to check in with mission controllers on Earth. This keeps the mission on track for its rendezvous with the asteroid Psyche in the main asteroid belt by the summer of 2029.

“It’s now ‘pedal to the metal’ to the asteroid Psyche,” said Don Han, the Psyche mission’s navigation lead at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which is managed for the agency by Caltech. “We will be running our propulsion system at every available opportunity, pausing only for necessary engineering activities. The thrusters will be operating nearly 90% of the time from now until we reach the asteroid.”
