Hello, Reddit! Caroline Bicks here, author of Monsters in the Archives: My Year of Fear with Stephen King. I'm a Shakespeare professor who grew up loving Stephen King's stories. When I took the job of Stephen E. King Chair in Literature nine years ago, I was told I'd never meet the man himself. Four years into the job, he called me at home, and we started to develop a great working relationship. He granted me first-of-its-kind access to his private archives, and my book grew out of what I found when I read all the existing drafts of Carrie, Pet Sematary, Night Shift, The Shining, and 'Salem's Lot. I look forward to sharing what I discovered with you about how he crafted these iconic books! https://carolinebicks.com

Discussion I just finished “Other worlds than these” and have now read every word of fiction by Sai King. Here’s my bookcase, ranked from favorite to least favorite.

Some of these placements hurt my heart but it had to be done. (Also I loved On Writing; it just doesn’t count for this rank ordering).

Edit: I forgot Later existed. Will be purchasing soon.

Also don’t have the full Gwendy trilogy. lol so thankful I let Reddit audit me. I’d have missed several books otherwise.

My first Stephen King book!

I sincerely loveee the movie. I watched it multiple times, and when I found out that it has a book, I decided to buy it and read it. Now that I finally finished reading it, I sobbed at the last 2 chapters.

I never expect this book to be this brutal! What was shown in the movie was like just the tip of the iceberg.

I love the characters. I love King's prose. I love this book😭🙏OMG-

Holy, Jeezum! It's a 10/10 for me. Sincerely.

I finally organized them into order of publication, almost. I started seriously collecting a couple years ago. After the last election I began a deep dive into reading horror to escape reality. The majority I acquired for cheap at library sales. I want to build a better book shelf. Share pics of your collection to help me with ideas in organizing.

Image Yet another map of Stephen King's Maine

As Halloween is approaching, I decided to try my hand with a roadmap version of Stephen King's Maine. I used as reference the real locations and their relative distances in the books to imaginary ones, plus the canon map in Dolores Claiborne. Although I had to torture geography a bit to compile this, I think it's mostly reliable, although I'm sure there are mistakes here and there, so it is what it is.

If you want to know how I placed most stuff and which references I used, I wrote it all in my Fiction Maps newsletter. I wrote it in Spanish, but these days even Substack in-AI will translate it for you (although you might miss some in-jokes, localisms and whatnot)

Movie The Twins Photo in Dr Sleep

When Dan returns to the overlook and is starting the boiler I spotted what may be a framed photo of the Grady twins. I wonder if this is supposed to be a call back to the scrapbook Jack finds in the book or just a coincidence. They appear to be younger in the photo than they are in the movie if so

I’m in FL for business & THE BONE turned on when I started my rental car. I had no idea it was real, but here we are. In the 20 min. To my hotel they played Pink Floyd, Metallica, Cheap Trick, Deep Purple, Boston, and Tesla to name a few. It felt like a late ‘90 station I used to listen to. 🤘

Watership Down is a Dark Tower book to me now

I needed a break from Blaine so I read Watership Down and it honestly felt like it was part of the series. Might even be nice between books 2 and 3.

Fun to see old friends from Battlestar Gallactica in the new Carrie

Of course we see a few of Flannagan's favorite actors in the show, but this was a fun reunion of actors from BSG. Apparently Trisha Helfer (Six), Aaron Douglas (Galen), Rekha Sharma (Tory) all had cameos in parent scenes. Might be worth a rewatch to see if I can spot them

Just finished misery for the first time and what a book! This was a hard one to put down, hooked immediately from the start and the further I got in, the harder it was to stop reading. Especially from the point when Annie came back from her Laughing place and everything completely hit the fan.

Throughly enjoyed the read and found it quite impressive to have such a captivating story with only two characters and one setting. Now to watch the movie!

I hate this trend in King adaptations of continuing the story that the author didn’t write

I really don’t like it when they continue a story of Kings when he didn’t write anything else after the original story he created. It’s so un authentic to the work in my opinion.

They are talking about a sequel to 1408 along with a season 2 of The Institute that King didn’t write
