ANNOUNCEMENT! I'm Caroline Bicks, Stephen E. King Chair in Literature at the University of Maine and author of MONSTERS IN THE ARCHIVES: MY YEAR OF FEAR WITH STEPHEN KING. Join me for an AMA on June 5th @1:15pm EST.
Hello, Reddit! Caroline Bicks here, author of Monsters in the Archives: My Year of Fear with Stephen King. I'm a Shakespeare professor who grew up loving Stephen King's stories. When I took the job of Stephen E. King Chair in Literature nine years ago, I was told I'd never meet the man himself. Four years into the job, he called me at home, and we started to develop a great working relationship. He granted me first-of-its-kind access to his private archives, and my book grew out of what I found when I read all the existing drafts of Carrie, Pet Sematary, Night Shift, The Shining, and 'Salem's Lot. I look forward to sharing what I discovered with you about how he crafted these iconic books! https://carolinebicks.com

Fun to see old friends from Battlestar Gallactica in the new Carrie
Of course we see a few of Flannagan's favorite actors in the show, but this was a fun reunion of actors from BSG. Apparently Trisha Helfer (Six), Aaron Douglas (Galen), Rekha Sharma (Tory) all had cameos in parent scenes. Might be worth a rewatch to see if I can spot them

Currently Reading Holy cockadoodie!
Just finished misery for the first time and what a book! This was a hard one to put down, hooked immediately from the start and the further I got in, the harder it was to stop reading. Especially from the point when Annie came back from her Laughing place and everything completely hit the fan.
Throughly enjoyed the read and found it quite impressive to have such a captivating story with only two characters and one setting. Now to watch the movie!

I hate this trend in King adaptations of continuing the story that the author didn’t write
I really don’t like it when they continue a story of Kings when he didn’t write anything else after the original story he created. It’s so un authentic to the work in my opinion.
They are talking about a sequel to 1408 along with a season 2 of The Institute that King didn’t write

Image Sorry, Obligatory collection shelf picture.
I finally organized them into order of publication, almost. I started seriously collecting a couple years ago. After the last election I began a deep dive into reading horror to escape reality. The majority I acquired for cheap at library sales. I want to build a better book shelf. Share pics of your collection to help me with ideas in organizing.

Discussion I have a bone to pick with this sub
Every time there’s a “Who’s the worst SK villain?” thread the responses are almost always Henry Bowers, Hockstedder, Flagg, or that witch from Dark Tower. Not once have I seen someone suggest Brady Hartsfield. I’m fairly new to King (only 8 novels under my belt, not counting his short stories) and outside of Judge Holden from Blood Meridian I can’t think of a more despicable fictional character. I’m only halfway through Mr. Mercedes and had to pause multiple times saying “What the actual fuck?” out loud. THE SCENES WITH HIS MOM 😳😳😬. His thought process is CHILLING the way he sees the world not to mention the murder plots that just pop into his mind. The only two SK villians I could compare would be like Pennywise and maybe Rose the Hat. TBH the only reason those two are worse is because they’re more powerful (although I have suspicion that Brady has a touch of the shine). Mr. Mercedes disturbs me more than either of them he’s horrible idk why you guys think some bullies with bad childhoods are worse than him.

2024 Salem's Lot -- Has Its Moments
Hovers right around 'a failed adaptation' -- you can tell someone brutally chopped it down to disjoint 90-second sequences, almost literally with a stopwatch in hand -- but it's not entirely without merit. The cinematography is good; Jordan Preston Carter owns the film as Mark Petrie; Bill Camp is strong as Jason Burke in the scant time he's given; and this Mike-Ryerson sequence in particular is chilling, as is the Ralphie-Glick abduction. Two of the rare bits that unfold over 3+ minutes.

Discussion Just finished!
Finished it this morning, and it's one of the best books I've ever read. Definitely a long, slow burn, but it really gets going 2/3 of the way thru. You really empathize with each of the Losers, and King's way of blending grief, loss, love, horror, and even Eldritch/cosmic horror was just amazing.
