....and I miraculously caught it before all the oil leaked out and killed my engine! I was on the highway all weekend, and if it had blown out while driving highway speeds it would have absolutely destroyed my engine.
Yesterday, I ran a couple errands and when I parked at the library I smelled burning oil. Got out and immediately saw a catastrophic oil leak pouring out onto the street. Well it must have just started, because I checked the level and had lost less than a quart of oil, so I immediately called a tow truck rather than risk topping it off and limping home.
I already knew about the problematic rubber oil pipes in these engines; when I bought this van I checked the upper hose and it had already been replaced with the metal upgrade, so I figured the hidden pipe underneath must have been replaced as well. I guess I made an ass out of u and me, because I assumed wrong.
I'd usually do this repair at home since it's just a simple swap, but of course a car never breaks down at home and always when it's raining for a week so I had it towed to a mechanic. He doesn't really speak English, but he took one look at my car and immediately said "oil pipe, very common" and seemed to agree that I caugt it early enough to avoid any damage.
I should probably go and buy a lottery ticket today, because at the rate it was losing oil while under pressure I probably only had a couple minutes until it ran dry.
If any of you drive an older Toyota with the 2GR-FE, make sure your rubber oil cooler lines have already been upgraded to the newer metal ones! This known issue can and will absolutely destroy your engine!
