Review/Analysis Booker Countdown - 6th Place: "The End of Everything" is Peculiarly Banal. Why M. John Harrison makes me miss Douglas Adams.
The End of Everything has my vote for last place among the six novels shortlisted for the Booker Prize. I'll be posting reviews of all of them in the leadup to the November 9 announcement of the winner. For fun, I am making casual comparisons of each shortlisted novel to a classic work of literature. This time that classic is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Fine, so it's not exactly Finnegan's Wake. I thought it was an instant classic when I was 13.
As for The End of Everything, how can a novel with so much delightful weirdness devote so little attention to building its distinctive dystopian world and so much to describing pretty tourist destinations on the coast of Kent?
If you are an admirer of M. John Harrison, maybe you can tell me what I'm missing. My review is on my website.
