Important bus information

I know some people have discussed this here before, but as a bus driver who started as a student, I thought I should share some important information about our transit system. While this is primarily for new students, there are a lot of students who go through here and never learn any of this.

*If you are uncertain about anything, ask the driver; however, they may not be able to respond if the bus is in motion, so it is best to ask when the bus is stopped at a bus stop or red light.

*UGA.passiogo.com (formerly routes.uga.edu; now a redirect) is more accurate for tracking the buses than the UGA app.

*The cameras and microphones are on at all times. Anything you say or do will be recorded.

*Scooters, motorized skateboards, one wheels, and anything motorized, with the exception of wheelchairs and other mobility devices required for medical purposes, are not allowed on the buses.

*Buses can only load and unload passengers at designated bus stops. This is for safety reasons. If you ask the driver to unload elsewhere, you will be denied.

*If a bus's destination sign is flashing "Out of Service" in between a route name, that means the bus is going out of service in the next 30 minutes and you can still ride to the last stop. It is not actually out of service until the sign reads "Not in Service".

*If a driver sits at a stop for a few minutes without moving, this is usually because they are ahead on their route, and need to let the other drivers get spaced out better. This often happens after class breaks and other episodes of heavy traffic that messes up spacing.

*During class breaks and other peak times, buses become VERY crowded. If you are standing on a crowded bus, you should take your backpack off and move towards the back. The bus cannot move until all passengers are behind the standee line.

*If you need on a bus that is about to/starting to pull away from a stop, wave at the driver (or their mirrors if you are behind the bus), and they will usually stop and let you on. If they don't, it is probably because they are having to watch the road in order to safely pull out into traffic. This happens very commonly at the Arch and Main Library.

*Buses will occasionally go off route in order to maintain spacing. The driver will usually notify the passengers in advance, however, and ask if anyone needs any of the bypassed stops before proceeding.

*While drivers do have to take breaks, they are not supposed to do so during class breaks unless it is urgent.

*Stop requests are unnecessary, except for on Night Campus, Prince Milledge, Weekender, and a few stops on Health Sciences, Vet Med, Riverbend Connector (formerly Greenhouse Shuttle), and Milledge Avenue. If a stop is on demand, the annunciator will announce "please signal to exit" or "please pull the cord to exit" in advance.

*While buses are required to stop for pedestrians, they are also extremely heavy, and can't stop on a dime. If you are approaching a crosswalk and see a bus approaching, don't cross. You might as well be walking in front of a train.

*Which brings me to my next point: ALWAYS stop and look both ways before crossing a street. The electric buses are very quiet, and especially hard to hear if you're on your phone or have earbuds in. If you cross a street without looking (especially if it isn't a designated crosswalk) and get hit, the bus driver will likely not be at fault if they are driving safely and obeying all traffic laws.

*If you are riding a scooter, bike, one wheel, etc., do not cut right in front of a bus, especially if the bus is in motion.

*If a bus is closed and pulling away from a stop that you need, do not make physical contact with the bus to alert the driver if it is already in motion. You could be seriously injured or worse.

*Cars, bikes, scooters, and any other vehicles are NOT allowed to pass buses when they are stopped in road on a two-lane. While people do it all the time, it is extremely dangerous.

*If you have to exit the bus and cross the street at a location without a crosswalk, do NOT cross in front of the bus. If a car decides to (illegally) pass the bus, you could get hit.

*Food and drinks are not allowed on the night routes after midnight. This is because the smell causes passengers who are drunk to become nauseated and throw up. If someone throws up on a bus and any of the contents get outside of a garbage can or bag, the driver has to remove all passengers and take the bus out of service.

*If a bus's destination sign says "Help! Call 911!", this is a distress signal that is used during the event of an emergency where the driver is unable to radio for help. We have never had a situation requiring this feature to be used, and if you see it, it was most likely activated by accident. However, you don't know that, so you should call 911 just in case it is a real emergency.

UPDATE: The "Out of service" message has been replaced with "This bus ends. Ask for last stop" and "Last bus". The former means that particular bus is going out of service and other buses will remain on the route. The latter means the entire route is going out of service for the day.

Question Questions on Online classes

• Upvotes

Hello, I'm a freshman, and I've been considering taking online classes over the summer because I'm not doing so well in a class and think I have to retake it, but I don't know how much harder it is to take it online. In high school, online classes were significantly easier than in person; is it the same here? At UGA, are all online classes tests recorded, or is it just some? Also, are tests required to be taken at a specific time, or can you do the work at any time? I know these are a lot of questions, but it would mean a lot if I could get some advice before dropping my class.

Question what foreign language to minor in?

• Upvotes

not asking for someone to tell me what to do or anything 😅 but i'd like some insight from people before deciding

i'm considering between spanish and chinese to minor in as a foreign language but a little torn between the two. for context, i took two years of spanish in HS and i actually enjoyed it, i like learning words and vocab. but also i already speak chinese from one of my parents' sides of the family but i can't read or write it very well; i can type, speak, listen, and read (conversationally).

so i'm torn between continuing spanish from HS or learning chinese. i’d appreciate any advice or insight from others. Any professor recommendations are welcome too! i'm also an engineering major if that’s relevant (not taking any ENGR courses rn tho)

Question becoming part time in the middle of the semester

• Upvotes

Hi, so I’m currently taking 13 credit hours. I’m planning on withdrawing from a 3 credit hour class, which will put me at part-time, does this affect anything if I’m on Zell? I’ve been told that financially I don’t need to worry about anything because it still meets the requirement to get Zell. I’m not an international student, and this class was just an elective that I overestimated.

Question Does minoring in a language make you become fluent in it?

For anyone at UGA who’s minoring in a foreign language, how much do you feel like you’ve learned by the end of it?

I don’t mean completely fluent, but like, would you say you can actually hold conversations and understand people in that language, or do you think you’d need to major in it to get to that point?

I’m thinking about minoring in a language, but I want to actually be able to speak and communicate in it, not just learn the basics for class. I’d love to hear from people who are doing a language minor or have already finished one!

Question How is the LLOD Online Master’s program?

If anyone has any insight to this degree, I’d appreciate it. I am employed by the university and will be getting by degree through TAP, but I do not work on or anywhere close to any of the UGA system’s campuses, so I’m pretty limited to online degrees. I’m also not looking for anything that is going to take too long or be too difficult. I know that every master’s program is going to take effort and discipline, but there’s a reason I’m not going back into hard STEM lol. I also don’t want this to be a bullshit breezy degree that I don’t learn anything from.

I’m interested in staying in the educational world, though the leadership development and organizational skills would be a huge bonus. For anyone who has gotten this degree, has it served you? What do you do now, and would you recommend it to others? What was the class work like?

Question Easy 2 or 3 credit hour courses for spring semester?

Does anyone know of any easy 2 or 3 credit hour courses I could take for the spring semester? 😭 I need a few extra credit hours to meet a 30 credit hour requirement for a scholarship, so the subject doesn’t really matter.
Ideally, something with a manageable workload that won’t be too stressful. Bonus points if it’s actually useful in some way outside of just earning credits lol. Any advice is appreciated!

Question Music Majors! Practice rooms for non music students?

I've seen some posts about practice rooms "technically" being available only to music majors, but that you can just cheese it and go after hours, but those posts are like 4 years old at least so I wanted to see if any current students have anything to say.

I just want to practice piano for a bit after 5 PM a few times a week, so do you guys know if its feasible for me to just find an empty room? Or did the restrictions change? Of course, if an actual music student comes knocking, I'll pack up.

Thanks in advance!

Meetup / Hangout Riding Marta to UGA/FL?

Any advice on taking Marta from North Springs to the 'Benz' for UGA/ FL? We go to this game every year in Jax. I'm from the Atl and rode a train every day to Sandy Springs to teach broadcasting classes. It was a little dicey back then, 2004. Rarely saw Marta cops. What can be expected now? My wife would rather fo Uber from Smyrna but I know that's not doable. Go Dawgs!

Hello, I was wondering if anyone saw a dorm key somewhere near IM fields or O House last night around 9pm? My dorm key got ripped off my lanyard alongside the chain it was on and I can’t seem to find it anywhere.

Discussion I’m worried about Flock cameras on Halloween

Hey everyone. Caption. Basically a lot of masked figures with props walking all over campus and downtown seems like an opportunity for a lot of ‘vigilantes’ to do things to the flock cameras and get away with it. I just hope a lot of people don’t end up realizing this and organizing to do something. We need to maintain our safety, and we should know this since ACCPD has been in the news recently about how they use flock cameras to make sure their ex wives are safe with Chad. Anyways, hopefully there isn’t a website somewhere that tells you exactly where all the flock cameras are and I hope people don’t use this opportunity to make sure we as a flock lose this safety we so greatly benefit from.

Question Dance bars in Athens

Bars in Athens

I graduated a couple of years back, but are there any good bars that play actual dance music? Like early 2000's? Because we went out tonight and heard baby by Justin bieber, what makes you beautiful by one direction, and lots of katy perry songs, which middle school me would have loved, but wanting to shake ass me? Did not enjoy.

To specify, I mean songs like yeah by usher, tipsy, and that general vibe. Not like just dance circa 2013

Question Where are the computers?

Hey guys, new student. Just wondering where all the computers are. I see computer labs listed in the directories for the libraries, but I only ever see monitor stations. I'm absolutely certain they must be somewhere; the alternative would be to believe that this school that costs 12,000 dollars a year to attend doesn't have computers in the library.

Question What is the ticketed class registration?

Basically the title is the question, what is the ticketed registration? I’ve heard that honors students get early registration so is that why they’re under ticketed registration? Like what is that?

If anyone has Steiner, how is the class going for you?

She mentioned a 1% increase to the final grade at the end and looks like that’s the only help she’ll ever give us if we do a survey but that won’t do any help after how bad a lot of us failed the first exam. Super worried for my grade and honestly wondering if I should just withdraw.

Question CSCI 1301 final exam?

Does anyone know what the CSCI 1301 final is like? Is it structured like the midterm exam?
I’m taking the class with Professor Stephens and for our midterm, we had a 40 multiple choice question with 3-4 free response questions where we needed to write a pseudo code for the answers

Question How to apply for 2nd degree?

I already got a BA a little over a year ago. So I can’t just register for classes anymore. I want to go back for a different bachelors degree.
I applied as a former/ returning student for Spring 2027 but I’m not sure if that’s right.
I was looking at the 2nd degree page on the website but it only really references applicants from other institutions as part of their requirements.

I really hope I can just enter in for Spring and not have to wait to apply as a transfer for Fall.

If anyone has advice or has done something similar please let me know.
I haven’t heard back from admissions but I emailed them. I’m getting a bit worried.
