PSA One of the greatest hidden gems of the 45" LG 5K2K OLED UW: Proper Cinemascope

Post image
64 Upvotes

I have a 77" OLED in my living room and that experience does not hold a light to a movie correctly displayed on my 45" LG 5K2K monitor.

There is something sitting only a few feet away on this monitor watching a movie in proper 4K, HDR, and a good 5.1 sound system that beats some of the fanciest set-ups I have ever been in.

The only app that I can get consistent passing of 4k+ resolution, anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital is Apple TV (maybe some Netflix? I don't have that sub anymore. Everything else downscales to 1080p). If you can suffer the app, it's absolutely worth giving it a go on a movie or TV series you love.

The curve and your sitting distance adds something to the content that is truly different - it's game changing in a way no theatre can accomplish. If I want to get close up and inspect something, it holds up with a proper 4k feed, if you want to kick back in your chair that curve just wraps the content around you.

PSA Ultrawide is just better.

Whether its 34, 39, 45 or 57 inches. It doesn't matter. Ultrawide is just better than widescreen and it always will be! 16:9 displays are just so, dare I say it... square. They just look so boxy and small in comparison. even if a 32 inch 16:9 has a slight advantage in screen real estate to a 34 inch ultrawide, that extra peripheral information just makes the whole experience so much more immersive. Nothing beats the feeling when you discover a mod for one of your old games you thought could only run in 16:9 and you see those black bars disappear and that biatch spans from edge to shining edge. I get it, everyone has their preferences. For me, I just can't understand how anyone could go back to a regular monitor after using an ultrawide. In my opinion they are the best for media consumption and for work. I always hear people say "oh, but muh vertical resolution". My answer to that is a side portrait monitor for whenever I need to edit a word document or read reddit or pull up discord. For games I much prefer the horizontal resolution, the peripheral information is what makes you feel more immersed in the game, because it just wraps around your head and blocks out the rest of the world. It's almost like putting on a VR headset in a way.

Anywho, that's all I wanted to say. Ultrawide monitors are so good and I would not want to live in a world without them.

Can’t beat ultrawides for workflow. 1st gen Odyssey LC49G95T on top (had this as my main for years and originally had a 34 inch ultra wide on top), Odyssey G91SD OLED bottom, MSI MAG271QX OLED left, 42 S90H right

Discussion AW3926QW - why the hate?

So I've been testing this ultrawide out and I have to say it's better than I expected. Maybe I got a lucky unit but I can't seem to notice the edge dimming very much. I tried a few tests and like OK, maybe it's a bit dimmer on a pure white screen but I won't be able to notice that while gaming. I also checked the uniformity and I can't say I see anything super obviously bad, maybe it's uneven here and there but again, I don't feel like it's anything I could be able to tell in a moving game environment.

Comparing it to a 83" LG G5 OLED, of course, the 39" AW is dimmer. But am I missing brightness? Not really. A light controlled room is a must for any OLED, so I'm suspecting most people who complain about the dimness are either photon sucking maniacs or just play in bright lit rooms where OLED is at its weakest. Even on my G5, if I'm looking at dark scenes in broad daylight, it loses much of its strengths and detracts from the watching/gaming experience by a considerable amount. Every single OLED I have ever tried had these problems whenever outside light sources were part of the equation.

As for gaming - 5080 runs it alright, pushing it on some titles, but it's not like 5090s are very available right now so compromises will have to be made for more demanding titles. So far though, most games perform much the same way as they do on my 4k display although there is SOME fps loss after all.

Tbh after gaming a lot on a 83” TV, a 32” monitor started feeling too small… hence 39”. I had skipped ultrawide for some years and am so glad to be back in it!

Recommendations Help choosing new gaming WQHD monitor

I recently upgraded my gaming rig to a 7800x3d 9070xt OC 32GB and looking to upgrade my current Samsung 34" SJ550 75hz to something a bit quicker. 80% of the time the PC is being used for content consumption / creation and office tasks so not keen on the idea of OLED due to burn in.

I'm considering either LG UltraGear™ 34-inch 160Hz or LG UltraGear™ G6 34-inch 240Hz. Has anyone that has used either of these panels provide feedback on the good, bad and ugly side of ownership. TIA

Ascension 5k2k on 5080 for single player games - will this be smooth or pushing it?

I just built a new PC and went with a 5080 because well...5090 is like 7k and couldn't justify paying that even though I wanted one. I have been eyeing some 5k2k monitos like the alienware 39" but im wondering if I should really go this route or go with a 1440p OLED. I mainly play games like God Of War, Elden Ring, Jedi Surivor, 007 first light etc.

Would a 5080 with DLSS be able to push a 5k2k monitor smoothly enough to hit a stable 60+ FPS ? Or would I most likely regret this decision?

Recommendations Time to retire my HP Envy 34, what's next? help?!

I absolutely loved my HP Envy 34 all in one. But the lag is killing me with Win 11.

The new Omni line only goes to 32 and I'm not willing to go smaller.

Recommendations? I don't game but am open multiple office and graphics programs heavy with a side of netflix or spotify streaming.

Just got this distorted image that won’t go away. ChatGPT thinks that if I replace the display control board it will resolve the issue. What’s the level of effort/cost/worth to fix vs calling it a loss and moving on?

Recommendations 45GX950A-B vs 45GX950B-B - What's the Difference?

I am currently gaming on an LG 32GK850F. I am looking for a larger screen that is at least as high as a 32" 16:9 but has more real estate.

I am heavily leaning towards the 45GX950 but I am confused on what the real difference is between the A-B and B-B versions. From what I can tell the B-B only difference is that is has AI upscaling capabilities. Is that it? The B-B version is noticeably cheaper in Canada t the moment.

Also, with a Asus STRIX 3080 10G is this going to be sufficient to run the requirements of the monitor for OLED 5K2K? I understand that I am not going to get max benefit but if I am playing things like FFXIV or GoW, etc is it going to be good enough until I can upgrade the GPU?

PSA PSA : Samsung refusing warranty coverage for G9 display panel delaminating

Thumbnail
gallery
261 Upvotes

After multiple calls with Samsung warranty support, they are outright refusing to honor warranty service on my < year old Odyssey OLED G9 (Model: S49DG934SN).

The adhesive along the frame has failed, causing the entire display panel to peel away and delaminate from the chassis under its own weight/heat.

It’s incredibly frustrating to drop this much money on a flagship monitor only to encounter severe assembly and material defects that Samsung treats as "uncovered." The monitor performs well when it works, but the build quality and lack of warranty support make it impossible to recommend.

Consider this a heads-up if you are currently shopping for one. if the frame separates, don't expect Samsung support to stand behind it.

EDIT: the funniest part to me is I posted a Samsung.com review as well as another post in the /samsung Reddit and both were removed 😂

Recommendations Having decision paralysis!

Hello, everyone! I currently have a 49' Samsung Neo G9 (the mini-led one). While I love this monitor, it is simply too wide and I constantly find myself only using maybe 60-70% of the total screen. For reference I use this monitor for roughly 60% productivity/40% gaming. Even though there is 32:9 mods or support I also find the UI in most games is misplaced or there is some issue. I also mostly play WoW and Total War if that helps.

I recently went to Best Buy and looked at both 39 and 34 inch monitors and I think both would be fine as far as size. If I had to choose a 39' would probably be better. I do not like glossy screens so the AW39 is out. While OLED would be nice, it's not something I "have to have" and I am especially concerned about fuzzy text (I look at spreadsheets/PPTs/numbers all day) and burn in.

That leaves....

LG 39' 5K2 OLED

ASUS ROG 34' and 39' OLED

Samsung G75F

I'm honestly leaning towards the G75F even though it is a VA panel, I am lucky and have gotten really great TVs and monitors from Samsung.

Which would y'all recommend or what other monitor could I look at? I do want it to be curved.

Ascension Dell 52inch Monitor (U5226KW)

Post image
86 Upvotes

After a whole year of decision making I finally made the purchase.
I needed a screen that could have multiple windows opened at the same time. I found minimising windows (Alt + Tab) frustrating.

I originally have the Dell 38 monitor which is now sitting on top of the Dell 52. My laptop is the ASUS Proart P16 with RTX 4070.

The photo does not do it justice. It looks massive and is immersive when playing games or watching movies.

I’m really enjoying the experience!

Tech Support new monitor setup (ultrawide+normal vertical)

i'm currently using a 100htz 1440p ultrawide samsung s5 (non curved) and i just got a new regular 1080p 120htz monitor, my desk cant fit having 2 horizontal monitors so i need to go for vertical ones. would it look awkward if i have a ultrawide above a normal monitor?

Tech Support Samsung G5 issues - got it for $170 but don’t know if this is normal - stretches at edge of view, weird colors

I just got a Samsung G5 34” and played some Overwatch and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. I noticed as I look around, an object will be, say, 2” wide when I look right at it. Then when I pan to the left or right, as the object gets nearer the edge of the screen, it stretches wider and wider. Once it’s at the edge of my monitor it’s like 3x wider. So I feel like using the new Ultrawide isn’t actually giving me more view it’s just artificially stretching things, in which case, what’s the point outside of top down camera games?

Is this expected? Between that and my struggle for several days now to get the colors to look good (it’s like too saturated in some ways and slightly washed out in others??) I’m a little disappointed even though I got this monitor for $170 used like new. But I don’t want to have to worry about OLED care, and I can’t find any deals on IPS ultrawides. I’m coming from an Asus PG279Q which I love.

Secondarily, is it normal for VA panels to have like… idk a weird 3D-ish sheen to them? I never noticed this on Asus but when I look at dark stuff in this Samsung it’s like there’s this weird 2-layer sheen that kinda changes as I look at diff parts of the screen / viewing angle changes, even if only slight. Also, in some games, like especially WoW Forever and slightly KCD2 but not Overwatch, I noticed that when the camera moves the colors change a bit, but only while moving. Like if im looking at the ground and moving my character, while in motion the ground becomes a bit more saturated, then goes back when i stop. Its only noticeable when theres a decent area of the monitor all one color for you to focus on while moving otherwise its too slight to notice.

Please help me out this is all driving me nuts and i dont know whether ill get used to it, i can improve it somehow, or if i should just return it.

Edit: less important but, it looks even MORE meh with my MacBook M1 Pro. Which i just use for productivity and so it’s less important. But its kinda dim, colors are even worse (same sort of lack of vibrancy, too saturated in some ways, washed out in others, AND some MacOS elements like icons etc just are kind of blurry, in a way that my build in display is not. Using DP to USB-C

Recommendations Searching for Ultrawide

I am looking for a specific ultrawide but I've been having some trouble finding it so I thought I'd ask for some help. Ideally I want my ultrawide to be 34 inch QHD 144hz+ with a glossy VA display. Also I do not want it to be curved at all.

I just want these specs because I want to place the ultrawide on top of my 16:9 monitor for a dual monitor setup hence the no curve. I'd also be willing to accept an IPS display as well as something like 1800R if one doesn't exist.

Recommendations The Compromise

Wide gaming is amazing, but my performance drops significantly when I add those additional areas... It would be perfect If I could tell my GPU to render everything on the sides in lesser resolution or in worse quality, that way I could get all the benefits of wideness and no drawbacks..

Discussion How many people have received their aw3926qw monitor in the UK?

Basically what the title suggests, ordered mine on the 17th September with an estimated delivery date of 16th of December and (as expected) no updates since.

How many people have actually received theirs so far? And when did you order/what expected delivery date did you have? Just a curiosity thing really.
