Politics Some perspective for those who feel wronged by the election

Progressive ideas are great. I've been a progressive voter my entire life and will continue to be. I'm upset that the NDP lost as well.

But our democracy demands compromise and finding common ground with people that hold different values. It is VERY apparent, based on the endless stream of threads in this sub, that many in Victoria feel that something that was theirs has been taken from them. You're not allowed to be offended by losing something that never belonged to you. Politics isn't won and lost. It's a conversation, not a contest.

If you woke up this morning acting like the government of BC somehow became your enemy overnight, it's time for some serious self-reflection on how lucky we are to live here and have a role in choosing our own government.

In case you haven't been paying attention to the recent news in Ottawa, Canada has taken part in an orchestrated global push amongst western nations to establish digital ID and eradicate internet privacy under the guise of child safety. The liberals have opted to surreptitiously push through bill C22 with no amendments and no debates despite ample public backlash to this bill, and Victoria's two liberal MPs are mindlessly towing the party line regardless of their constituents desire. Elizabeth May has rightly called C22 "gathering forces that affront democracy itself". Please take a brief moment out of your day to call their offices and tell them in no uncertain terms to take the boot out of their mouths and oppose these bills!

Politics Well folks it’s getting real. Time to stop buying American products wherever possible.

3.8k Upvotes

The Canadian dollar compared to USD dropped to the lowest point it’s been in decades, a trade war has begun, and we have been told that if Canada retaliates the USA will place even higher tariffs on us.

Things we can do as individuals in Victoria to help is purchase entirely Canadian made products, we need to put the biggest dent that we can into their economy. Don’t travel to the US, don’t invest in US companies right now, don’t eat at McDonalds… etc. I would love to hear more ways that we as Victorians can do to help, but one thing for sure is that it’s a group effort and we all need to play our parts in this. This is a big deal.

Politics Leaked document shows Conservatives will end no fault insurance

Lorne Doerkson said in the letter that if elected on Oct. 24, the Conservatives would bring in legislation to restore accident victims’ rights to sue under a new “hybrid system” designed to keep rates affordable, while protecting people.

The interim leader said in the letter that everything is on the table when it comes to auto-insurance, including private competition.

“One thing isn’t up for debate: people seriously hurt by reckless drivers deserve their day in an independent court, not just an online tribunal staffed by government appointees,” he said.

The Insurance Corporation of B.C. is Crown corporation that was established in the early 1970s. It has a monopoly on basic insurance but people can buy optional protection from private agencies.

The NDP government introduced the no-fault insurance system in 2021, that generally prevents car accident victims from suing, in response to what NDP Leader David Eby said was a “financial dumpster fire” at ICBC with losses in the billions.

Doerkson told reporters on Tuesday that the policy is needed to allow people with serious injuries to be properly compensated to manage their post-accident lives.

“Folks have found themselves in a place where they’ve been injured in such a bad way that it is life-altering, and they’re not receiving the supports that they need,” he said. “The reality is, I’m committed to making sure that insurance is affordable for British Columbians, but we need to address both sides of this.”

Eby said during an unrelated news conference that the letter leaked by the union representing ICBC workers shows that Doerkson is pursuing a hidden agenda.

“I am astonished that in a time when families, when drivers are struggling, that he would have a secret plan with trial lawyers to hand over the money from drivers to lawyers,” he said.

But Doerkson said no-fault insurance has been “very challenging” for the residents for multiple reasons.

“Obviously we have to provide affordable insurance coverage for all of our residents, but for those that have experienced catastrophic injury and potentially life-altering injury, this program has not supported them well,” he said at an unrelated news conference in Vancouver.

“And in so many cases, we need to improve that and we absolutely have to contemplate this insurance model.”

Doerkson said he had made “no promises” about the plan.

But in the Sept. 29 letter to the vice-president of the Insurance Bureau of Canada, and the presidents of the Law Society of B.C., the Trial Lawyers Association of B.C., and the Canadian Bar Association, he said new legislation would be passed within a year of the Conservatives being elected.

“Accident victims will get back their right to recover for their serious injuries, and government will get out of the legal profession’s business.” the letter said.

B.C. can look to Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, P.E.I., and Newfoundland and Labrador, which “all have hybrid insurance models.

“We can learn from them and do better,” the letter said.

The NDP said in a statement that trial lawyers have been lobbying to end the no-fault system “that lowered car insurance rates for drivers and has kept them frozen for seven years.”

It describes the Trial Lawyers Association as “the organization representing personal injury lawyers who previously worked on ICBC cases.”

The Conservatives accused Eby of inventing numbers to scare drivers after Eby said that Doerkson’s plan signals a return to the “old style of car insurance” that promised a doubling of rates.”

Politics Conservatives sitting at majority territory according to 338 latest update

Since calling the snap election it looks like ndp is losing female voters and that's usually their strongest base. It's still early and they are only going by 2 polls released that shows conservatives leading by 8 and 1 point so there's still a few weeks to go to change minds if NDP is going to turn this thing around with the recent LNG announcement.

Politics When’s a good time to vote for the Green Party?

NDP supporters should stop having main character syndrome. According to you guys, the only time to vote for the Green Party is when the NDP is so ahead that they’re guaranteed a majority.

If the NDP is in minority territory, then you would all be saying how it’s too dangerous to risk splitting the vote.

Yet, why would the NDP ever listen to the Green Party if they have a majority? NDP supporters are saying that you should only vote for the Green Party when they have no chance of influencing provincial politics.

Don’t get fooled by the rhetoric around vote splitting. It’s all about benefitting the NDP.

Don’t forget, Eby called this election because he’d rather risk giving the Conservatives a majority than share his power with the Green Party.

If he’s willing to gamble like that, then why should you give up your vote for him?

Politics Eby slams U.S.-style health care privatization, Conservatives claim ‘fearmongering’

Thumbnail

Eby took questions from supporters who noted Alberta's United Conservative Party's government making vague promises on protecting healthcare but have now created a system where doctors can now charge families money for medically necessary surgeries.

He said they are doing the same thing but the Conservatives claim they are committed to keeping BC system universal and publicly funded and accused him of fearmongering.

Eby has made it a promise for public healthcare guarantee to protect the system from charges that would charge patients for necessary care

Critics have pointed out Alberta's healthcare law which muddled the national healthcare plan and moved them closer to the U.S Style two-tier healthcare model

Eby said “We’ve seen the Conservative playbook in action. They pretend health care is safe to get your vote. Then the moment they get into power, it’s carved up for profit,”

Doerkson said this was fearmongering and promised to keep ER rooms open and recruit doctors and nurses that the public needs.

And so it begins...are we going to turn into Alberta's healthcare system?

Politics The NDP lost Greater Vancouver and Surrey. The Island didn't even matter.

I made a post 5 months ago after the fallout of the Cowichan decision flipped a huge portion of greater Vancouver and Surrey in the polls. The post was down voted into oblivion for obvious reasons. The polls continued to show Conservative majorities since than until the Conservative leadership debacle, which could have lead Eby to calling the early election. However, even if all the districts on the island went NDP, it still wouldn't matter because they lost control of Vancouver/Surrey.

The god awful handling of the Cowichan decision by the NDP served the mainland up on silver platter to the Conservatives. And though its not on the onus of the Cowichan tribes to quell fears about land ownership, they didn't really do much to calm the situation down besides a general statement. Now if you look at the Conservative media pipeline (Facebook, Reddit and X), they continued to fan the flames of the Cowichan decision with news of further NDP land transfers to First Nations. The real consequences of the Cowichan decision and the land transfers have yet to be seen, but many law professionals say there will be little if any difference that these transfers will make. Its essentially chalked up to a culture war talking point.

So what I see from this election is the Conservatives essentially winning a culture war against the NDP , on a talking point that the NDP and the left in general ignored because it was uncomfortable and the Conservatives were the only ones willing to question it.

Politics Doerkson confirms SOGI will be out in first interview should Conservatives win and wants to change relations with first nations

Their full platform will release in days as they need time to discuss what they would do but he did a quick interview with CBC explaining he was surprised he was harpooned to conservative leadership heading into the snap election but says he will do his best to win over the NDP in the election.

One thing is for sure SOGI will be out despite being supportive of LGBT causes. He says schools should go back to teaching arithmetic and reading and not focus on sexual orientation and that SOGI has become something it wasn't meant to be.

He also says he wants to change relations with first nations with respect to their right for their resources on traditional territories and believe they can both work together to share the resources for all of bc.

He wants to "unite the right" to defeat the left and certainly doesn't want to split the votes with OneBC but doesn't want to cut special deals with them.

He also admitted they are united now but what comes after should they win that will be a real effort and headache for the party because there are strong minds and opinions in their caucus fighting for what policy to govern on.

I think that last part he mentioned will question voters minds on what if he does not become permanent leader should they win and the caucus votes in another Kerry-Lynne Findlay in a switcharoo premier scenario

Politics BC Begins Voting As Conservatives Have Yet To Reveal A Costed Platform

Thumbnail

Voting has already begun in BC without the release of the Conservatives costed platform which Doerkson says is "imminent". The interim leader says he's seen the platform but wants to make sure they aren't going to promise anything they can't make happen and want the numbers to be right and doesn't want to overpromise such as David Eby's $1000 grocery rebate.

Eby and Lowan released their costed platforms already on what to spend and how to reduce the deficit.

Doerkson pledged to cut income taxes by $1000 for most working BC Residents as Eby said their promises would cost up to 5 billion and have not explained how they would pay for it but says the answer is obvious that they would pay for it with cutting services that every family relies on

Politics If Conservatives win, what sort of cuts are we anticipating?

they haven't released a platform yet on their vision and doerkson has dodged the question on what cuts he would make

for sure government jobs will be first on the line given they're the largest employer in the province.

but that won't be enough so what are we expecting?

alberta has been wanting a conservative government so they can get more oil ports so i'm expecting a repeal on the tanker ban.

i'm hoping they won't go the route of alberta in opting out of the canadian healthcare system that would leave thousands who have diabetes to pay for medication. They could however bring back MSP premium tax or cut the amount of public funding for drug medications

DRIPA would definitely be out for good.

american booze won't come back on shelves he said unless they get something in return from the US

Politics Biggest takeaways from the municipal election

Slates work.

Going into next municipal election, progressives, housing advocates, and left-leaning supporters need to pool their resources and run as political parties or slates.

I know it sucks, but gone are the days of independent municipal councils.

We’ve just had many NIMBY slates get into government, because the candidates worked together and used their resources to get out their voting base.

Also, Millennials & Gen-Z, we need to step it up when it comes to voting. We’re the biggest voting blocs, and still we don’t show up to vote. Our parents/grandparents generations are showing up in droves, which is why we got the result that we did tonight.

Politics Taxes become theme in BC election as NDP/Green call for tax hikes while Conservatives offer a tax cut but don't say how much it will cost

ndp are calling for a tax hike on the high income earners while greens are calling for a tax on wealth to help pay for services while conservatives are offering a 1k tax cut and no tax on alcohol to "supercharge" the economy despite BC losing 26k jobs and not saying how much this would cost.

the conservative platform is really what are we willing to lose in order to get a little something back which will likely be bringing back higher rates and msp premiums to offset that

I've heard a lot of discussion lately about vote-splitting in this upcomming provincial election. I think its a valid concern in our voting system. However, in Victoria we couldn't even vote conservative even if we wanted to. Joachim Agou was removed from the Conservative party on October 8th, so he's running as an independent.

Does this clear up the vote splitting issue in this riding? Our choices are the encumbent NDP rep Grace Lore, the BC Geens Rep Rajinder Sahota, and an independent Joachim Agou.

Politics Is healthcare privatization really where we're headed in bc?

with the talks of health overhaul on the menu from the conservative side it seems like healthcare privatization is back on the table. this is a very touchy issue for voters because we really don't want to end up like the U.S and its problems and be under the rule of our insurers on what is and isn't covered and even worse for those without insurance who can't pay out of pocket. i also don't want us to end up like Alberta who opted out of the national pharmacare program and it's unfortunate people with diabetes over there still have to fork out of pocket

we're seeing many new nurses and doctors come to our province only because of how shitty the us healthcare system has become from privatization. our problems are different but conservatives don't seem to care if people can't afford healthcare since they believe it's a personal responsibility and not their problem.

NDP feds fought tooth and nail to force the liberals to pass dental and health for all and if the conservatives opt us out of it it will be tough times ahead for a lot of people.

polling has shown 55+ voters are heavily toward ndp and everyone else under is giving the conservatives the edge. i see why elderly voters are nervous about healthcare changing and why ndp is focused in that group
