Accusations, and an American Legend
On October 26, 1881, a confrontation in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, left three men dead and three wounded.
But the familiar Hollywood version leaves out much of the story.
The gunfight didn’t actually happen inside the O.K. Corral. It took place in a nearby vacant lot beside C. S. Fly’s photography studio.
The confrontation involved Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan Earp, along with Doc Holliday, facing members of the Clanton-McLaury faction.
Behind the violence were months of political rivalries, competing business interests, accusations of criminal activity, and personal hostility.
What happened during those thirty seconds remains disputed.
Some witnesses supported the Earps’ account that members of the opposing faction reached for their weapons. Others described the Earps as the aggressors.
Billy Clanton and brothers Tom and Frank McLaury were killed. Virgil Earp, Morgan Earp, and Doc Holliday were wounded. Wyatt escaped injury.
But the story didn’t end there.
Ike Clanton filed murder complaints, leading to a preliminary hearing before Justice Wells Spicer.
Witnesses disagreed over who initiated the shooting and whether Tom McLaury had been armed.
Spicer ultimately determined that the evidence did not justify holding the defendants for trial.
This was not an acquittal by a jury following a full murder trial.
The violence continued. Virgil Earp was ambushed in December 1881, Morgan Earp was murdered in March 1882, and Wyatt Earp subsequently pursued men he believed responsible in what became known as the Earp Vendetta Ride.
Decades later, books and Hollywood transformed this complicated frontier feud into a simplified tale of heroic lawmen confronting ruthless outlaws.
The historical record tells a far more complicated story.
