This month we are celebrating u/Jay_Pederson
Jay_Pederson has been an impressively regular writer here for a couple of years now, as well as contributing in discussions. Their stories are often funny and fantastical, but they can’t be pigeon-holed that easily, trying their hand at all sorts of different genres and styles through regular prompts and our Fun Trope Friday weekly feature. But one thing remains true: that their stories are always enjoyable. And because of how prolific they are, there are plenty of them to be had. You can find more on their archive subreddit r/JayPederson, which I’d recommend you check out.
Want to congratulate this month's Spotlight recipient? Have questions you're dying to ask them? Please do so below in the comments!

Off Topic [OT] Fun Trope Friday: Freudian Excuse & Giallo!
Welcome to Fun Trope Friday, our feature that mashes up tropes and genres!
How’s it work? Glad you asked. :)
Every week we will have a new spotlight trope.
Each week, there will be a new genre assigned to write a story about the trope.
You can then either use or subvert the trope and/or genre in a 750-word max story or poem (unless otherwise specified).
To qualify for ranking, you will need to provide ONE actionable feedback. More are welcome of course!
Three winners will be selected each week based on votes, so remember to read your fellow authors’ works and DM me your votes for the top three.
Next up… IP
It’s October. The time of falling leaves, jack o’lanterns, and candy. And blood… so much blood. This month will be focusing on all things horror with maybe a treat or two to sweeten the pot. Please note this theme is only loosely applied.
"Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways." — Sigmund Freud
Trope: Freudian Excuse — The villain is vile, but has depth, as they have a reason for being that way. With the Freudian Excuse, the villain had an abusive and particularly violent backstory making them insane and warping their perception of the universe, and that's why they're sociopathic.
Genre: Giallo — A cycle of stylish, psychosexually loaded Italian crime films which peaked sometime in the late '70s. The name means "yellow," and refers to the yellow covers of the pulp detective novels that were adapted into the first of the films. Gialli are generally plotted as "puzzle" mysteries (with either police or amateurs investigating), but with a heavy admixture of horror and thriller elements. Major directors of gialli include Dario Argento, Mario Bava, and Lucio Fulci. Many American movies have been influenced by gialli. These include Basic Instinct, Kill Bill, Vol. 2 (when it isn't being a Spaghetti Western), Se7en, the Hostel movies, and most of Brian De Palma's filmography. As usual, please remember to follow all sub rules.
Skill / Constraint - optional: Leather comes into play.
So, have at it. Lean into the trope heavily or spin it on its head. The choice is yours!
Have a great idea for a future topic to discuss or just want to give feedback? FTF is a fun feature, so it’s all about what you want—so please let me know! Please share in the comments or DM me on Discord or Reddit!
Last Week’s Winners
PLEASE remember to give feedback—this affects your ranking. PLEASE also remember to DM me your votes for the top five stories via Discord or Reddit—both katpoker666. This is a change from the top three of the past. In weeks where we get over 15 stories, we will do a top five ranking. Weeks with less than 15 stories will show only our top three winners. If you have any questions, please DM me as well.
Some fabulous stories this week and great crit at campfire and on the post! We had 17 stories, so we’re back to five winners. Congrats to:

Prompt Inspired [PI] An alien species doesn’t have the same brain chemistry that humans have, leading solitary confinement to be a simple punishment for them. They’re horrified when they realize they’re causing immense harm to human captives.
To the aliens, solitary confinement was no biggie. Their sentencing methods for their own criminals had prisoners alone in tiny cells for years at a time. For them, solitary was as common a punishment as a fine or a parking ticket.
To us, well… The governments were still trying to decide if solitary is actually torture (it is) and if we should get rid of it (we should).
When the aliens made first contact, among other things they picked up from us, was our methods of incarceration and punishment. They were curious about the concept of “fines” and wanted to know how we ran our prisons.
”How is it different from us?”
As the years went by, our societies became more integrated. Embassies opened, trade happened, treaties appeared, travel occurred, all the good stuff of meeting a new culture. They took some of our laws and implemented them in their society and we took some of theirs. We never did get around to making extradition treaties though.
Now because of this, we sometimes got aliens into our criminal system. We put them in jail, solitary confinement in fact, and left them to rot, and they were fine with that. The few caring psychologists on the prison staffs would worry and fret, but after much communication, it was understood that containing the aliens this way was better.
The aliens got the same from us. Tourists committing murder, robberies, and assaults would sometimes fly out to the alien homeworld, and of course, the aliens had to act. In the alien prison system they went straight to solitary (since that's what the aliens did with their own people, and they'd seen us put our own there, so they were just copying).
There was no general population in these alien prisons, not even for the aliens. (That's something else they found strange about our jails.)
And no one said a thing until those first sentences for humans on their homeworld ended.
Those people, when dropped off at their own houses, were a mess. They hallucinated more, had issues doing normal things, were far more sensitive, had other mental conditions they probably didn't have when entering the alien institution, and a whole host of physical and mental problems.
They died quicker and the aliens (not us) noticed this strange change and the differences between species.
An inquiry was sent to us from the alien authority in their homeworld's capital ”What's going on? Why are people suffering so much in solitary? Should that not just be a jaunt in the park like it is for us?”
See the aliens, while being social creatures like us, had a special ability to “turn off their mind”, pretty much put them into an automated state until they felt like resuming consciousness. With their solitary confinement policy, they were told exactly when they'd be released, and set their brains to disconnect until then.
Us humans can't do that. We have to be aware the whole time, well as aware as someone suffering the effects of solitary confinement could be. No, knowing exactly when it would end did not help matters.
When they (the aliens) found out ah, debates about banning solitary and why we were having them, they might have pulled several human diplomats and political leaders into private rooms and screamed at them for days.
The current prisoners within solitary on their homeworld were all pretty much released, given a metric fuckton of therapy by human therapists that their government hired at great expense, and they were paid quite handsomely for their suffering.
On Earth, because our leaders still didn't really care (longstanding societal norms suck), the aliens joined the prison reformers to rid the world of solitary for humans (though they wanted to keep it for aliens).
Anyways, the aliens being in horror about what they did to humans (and even more what we did to ourselves in the name of justice) might have caused a very tiny intergalactic diplomatic incident.
We're still recovering from that.
And the aliens might want to control all our jails.
Inspired by this prompt here.
