Work & Professional Growth As a doctor, I think I’m slowly losing my spark.
Problem/Goal: Almost seven months into fellowship, and I think I’m finally starting to feel really burnt out. I’ve always been the type to push through difficult things, so it feels strange to be at a point where I’m struggling this much. For the first time, I’m wondering how much longer I can keep going at this pace.
Context: Nararamdaman ko na siguro ngayon yung pagod from going straight into residency and fellowship after an accelerated medical school program. I’ve been in the same institution since med school, so I feel like there’s more pressure on me now. I’ve always been passionate about what I do kahit mahirap, but this is the first time I’ve genuinely felt this exhausted.
I think mom guilt is also a big part of it. I have a toddler now, and I can’t always be there for her because of my job. Yung iniisip ko nalang ay habang bata pa siya, mas magandang tapusin ko na yung training ko. At least by the time she’s older, I’ll hopefully have more time for her. But knowing that doesn’t make it any easier to be away from her.
I also feel like I’m not doing enough as a partner. I’m getting married soon, but my non-showbiz partner has been handling most of the wedding preparations. He keeps reassuring me naman that he really understands my situation, but I still feel guilty about leaving so much of it to him.
Previous Attempt: I actually thought I just needed to unwind. Noong resident doctor kasi ako, I experienced something similar. After traveling during my scheduled leave, I would feel okay again.
Last week, we went on an international trip to celebrate my partner’s birthday. It was nice to get away for a while, but I came back feeling just as exhausted. If anything, I felt even more overwhelmed seeing all the pending work waiting for me.
