Welcome! Please Read the Employment FAQ Before Posting Questions About Work.

We get it. You recently heard of Antarctic work, and now you've got a bee in your parka and lots of QUESTIONS!

Very cool, we were there too.

But for the love of all that is frozen and holy, please read our Employment FAQ before posting. It's a good read, I promise, and it will answer most of your questions — and many you haven't thought of!

Tourism Travel and Tourism Information

Making travel decisions can be hard! We know. That's why we offer a Travel and Tourism FAQ with common Q&As about booking trips to Antarctica.

If you need more information specific to cruises, we suggest posting in the AntarcticaTravel forum that is frequented by guides and tourism professionals. You are also welcome to post here in r/antarctica, of course, but you'll get perspectives from both fellow travelers as well as people outside of the tourism industry, including workers and scientists with experience on the continent in general, not just on the ships.

Relax. Make it fun! Everything will be all right.

US Antarctic Program How does a submariner join the program as a researcher?

As you can tell from the title, I’m in the submarine force as of currently, just fresh out of A-school going to go to my boat by the end of November, and I really want to, after my 5 years of military service in the submarine force (one year of school and boot camp done) and this job as electronics tech and navigation, I really want to take some tuition assistance and learn glaciology and meteorology (I don’t know how college works :/ but I’m learning!) and when I am out I want to pursue my dream of going to Antarctica as a researcher.
I just think going from one metal tube to another seems like a cool idea, and I like the cold, I like adventure, and I like the indoors a lot, aswell as isolation (with other people ofc)

Also I’m pretty sure navigation which is a huge part of my job covers most of the science of geography, basically boosts my experience up- even if I were kicked out now, I have an education from A-school.

Anyways I’m just hoping for some tips, advice, or if this is even possible- if this could possibly become an immediate process, or if this slow and tedious requiring me to spend years trying to get qualified for? Or if my submarine experience chops it in half?

my dad was in VXE-6, the unit that crashed the pegasus.

my father is starting to show signs of dementia, and i found myself wondering how many times i have left to hear all his antarctica stories. i remember most of them, and came across this subreddit while i was googling pictures of the pegasus, so i decided i'll tell you very short versions of a couple of his best stories. he was a plane captain for two years in VXE-6.

when they were on the ice, the people in his unit would take their leave in christchurch, new zealand, which is also where they flew out to williams field from. on one trip going back to the ice in a c130, the cargo door opened mid-flight and they were far enough out that turning back would not have made sense. so my dad sat in the back of a freezing cold c130 for several hours with an open cargo door not knowing if they could land with it open or what. fortunately, the runway at williams is, quite famously, made of snow, so that cushion combined with a skilled pilot, led to a smooth landing.

the other story was the pegasus crash. he was NOT on the plane this time, but most of his buddies were and it was really nerve racking. they had bad turbulence almost the entire 9-hour flight from christchurch, and one guy had spent the majority of the flight puking in the airplane bathroom. when the plane took its hard landing, that poor guy was unfortunately still in the bathroom (but totally ok.) have you ever wondered why pieces of that plane are cut off? my dad did that. he cut off parts of the plane for crash survivors who wanted souvenirs. the guy in the bathroom took home the toilet set.

i hope you appreciate these stories. i have 46 years of being my dad's daughter and hearing his stories over and over and over again, but it's fun to share them with a new audience too. these are pics of my dad on the ice - he's the blond one.

Science How to go as a student?

I really want to do to Antarctica as a part of some sort of educational program in high school - I’ve done some research into the topic, but Im not sure about which program is best. Additionally, I would want to do a science program (preferably space or ocean-related). Any advice on which are best? Thanks!

Work Is it worth it to work as a steward?

I have done 5 years of food service, and I am wondering if it is worth it to work down there during the austral winter. I'm currently in college so I was thinking of doing it to give me a year to catch up and study on my own whilst also earning money. Also just doing it cause it's a life goal to go everywhere I can. I am a mechanical engineering student.

Sorry if this doesn't make much sense

Dumb packing question

I've been to ice before so I understand how 99.9% of the game already works so I'm not going to bug you all with the generic "what do I pack" stuff. I'm going to pole this winter and I think I want to bring some of my minis and models to paint and work on while I'm there. The question I have is traveling with a paint set, anyone ever bring any paint down before? Anyone have any suggestions on how to pack it for the journey? That's all. Thanks Ice friends.

How are the Computer Technician jobs at McMurdo Antarctica

I've heard about jobs in Antarctica and saw a post from years ago, but a lot can change in 3-5 years. How are these kinds of jobs now? Mainly the computer technician jobs, since my current job is IT. I heard the pay is maybe a little bit more than what I make now, plus I wouldn't have to worry about a place to live or eat. But I'd like more information about the pay, food, and accommodations. If anyone has some recent experience or knowledge, it would be a great help.

Can you request a flight for extra vacation time in New Zealand?

I have several friends who live in NZ whom I wish to visit. Is it possible to request a flight for, say a week earlier to NZ from the states?

Vice versa, when leaving the Ice, has anyone requested for a flight back to the States later than the date they were given?

Can you PQ with glasses?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Im a bit confused on the reading if this, I am working through my medical and the eye test confirmed that my vision does not fit the standard for 20/40 in one of my eyes. Would I be able to get glasses/contacts and PQ? Or does this mean my chances are shot unless I get lasik?

Edit: sorry, to my understanding "with correction" means if I can get to 20/40 by wearing glasses then I'll be fine?

I saw it on Tiffany publishing co and haven’t really seen it anywhere else. You get it after you cross the Antarctic circle also known as the Royal domain of the Penguin. It also says civilians can earn it too.

Not PQd because of erectile device?

This is a wild question, but has anyone here ever NOT been PQ’d because you have an erectile device? My health and dental were spotless aside from that and I just got my notice that I’m not getting PQ’d. I’m afraid it was because of that which doesn’t feel right..

Work Question!

I’m in the hiring process currently and just finished my finger prints for my EBI, what was the time frame of getting the PQ packet after that? Once they pass me or was I supposed to already receive it and start setting up appointments? I am in the process to try and get on the ice in November.
