Came home from work. Toilet was full and have been plunging for 20 minutes but will not flush

Hello, I came home from my teaching job and my toilet was like this. I did not use the bathroom here all day and I live alone. I tried plunging the toilet for about 20 minutes but it will not flush and it keeps overflowing. Is there anyone who can help me! My apartment complex says they're not responsible for plumbing issues.

It’s always fun opening up walls in an old house, you never know what you’re going to find.

This is the back of my tub, which was renovated by the previous owners.. any ideas why they left a vice grip clamped to the supply line of the tub spout?

My only guess was to hold the pipe still while attaching the spout, but wanted to see if there’s any other practical reason for this before I remove it lol.

Washing machine drain pipe question

My washing machine drain pipe was recently changed from galvanized to pvc. It does not feel super secure like the previous pipe. Is there a way to secure this to the wall so it doesn't move around? Thank you.

Some advice please

Became a homeowner recently and I know literally nothing about plumbing. When my main shut off valve is closed it's begun a steady drip. Below this is a pipe into concrete and above is an indoor meter. Not sure on age of this specifically but it's an old house, my main questions are 1. Could i replace any of this myself? 2. How much would this cost me if I hired someone? I have an electrician/carpenter friend who thinks I absolutely could replace at least the valve myself but idk.

Feel free to over explain things cuz I have no idea what anything is even called. Big thanks to anyone who sees this!

Need some help, shower pan drain

Looking for advice from Ontario plumbers!
I’m renovating my second-floor bathroom in Ontario, and installing an acrylic shower pan over a 2-inch ABS drain. My living room ceiling is directly underneath, so I won’t have access from below.

I purchased an Oatey ABS no-caulk compression drain, but I’ve been reading about people experiencing leaks with these drains. Some plumbers seem to strongly prefer solvent-weld drains for long-term reliability.

Would you personally use an Oatey no-caulk drain in this situation, or would you go with a solvent-weld drain?

If you recommend a solvent-weld drain, how would you actually install it from above when the P-trap is already beneath the subfloor and there’s no access from below?
I’d appreciate feedback from plumbers who have experience installing both types.

Thanks!

Toilet exploded after upstairs neighbor was doing anything and everything in their bathroom

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi there, apologies if I’m posting in the wrong sub or doing this wrong. I’m just frustrated out of my mind and desperate for answers. My partner and I live in an apartment complex. So far, maintenance hasn’t been very helpful and I’m getting tired of not being able to use the toilet in our apartment. We are all the first to live in these units, so I’m assuming that it isn’t a problem that’s been built up over the years.

Recently, our toilet has been making gurgling and bubbling sounds but it seemed harmless (?). Sometimes the water level would vary, but we didn’t think anything of it as the toilet flushes in an odd way anyway (at least not what I’m used to). We also would see particles in the water every so often and also assumed it was just the other person who didn’t flush a second time to get rid of all the particles after using it.

About a month ago, we heard a lot of gurgling and bubbling from the toilet after our upstairs neighbor was active in their bathroom. About a couple hours later, an explosive sound in the apartment but couldn’t find the source. I found it later when there was piss and hair (probably pubes) splattered up against toilet and toilet cover. I put in a maintenance request and all I got was that the request was marked as “resolved.” We realized and noticed that a lot of the sounds occur late at night only, which is when my upstairs neighbor is most active in their bathroom (seriously I have no idea what they could possibly be doing each night like that)

Tonight, I noticed the toilet would fill up and then flush and I also heard gurgling and bubbling sounds coming from my shower drain (right after my neighbor drained a large amount of water). I closed the toilet cover just in case and moments later, I heard another explosive sound from the toilet. This time, there’s no water and soap bubbles everywhere. I already put in another maintenance request, but I know they’re not gonna be helpful at all.

What is going on? Is it related to the plumbing with the upstairs neighbor? Please help. All I want is to rest my butt on the toilet seat and not be worried that someone else’s waste will be on the seat in my own home lol

Thank you in advance!!

TLDR:
Apartment complex. Toilet makes gurgling and bubbling sounds. Now, toilet has started to explode even without use. Seems to occur only at night when upstairs neighbor is most active with what I assume is their bathroom use. Already asked maintenance to look, but they marked it as “resolved.” What is happening and is it related to my upstairs neighbor?

Here’s the video. It usually runs for longer than this video caught. Will randomly run on its own. What’s causing it? Is it making my water bill go up?

Warped Toilet Flange

• Upvotes

I just replaced my toilet which has had a recurring sewage gas smell. When removing the old toilet I noticed the old iron flange was higher on 1 side about 1/4-1/2" and looked slightly bent up on that side. I used a rubber ring and installed the new toilet which is secure to the floor but there is still a sewage gas smell.

Should I switch to a wax ring? Should I try to level it with an Oatey Fix-It Red Steel Flange repair ring and then use a wax ring? The subfloor is concrete. It looks like there is some grout on some of the iron ring as well from a floor remodel so it would be tough to remove/replace. It seems secure and stable otherwise.

any advice appreciated!

Toilet Rocking on Flange

I'm doing this remodel from the joists up. I just finished my tile and flange install. I thought I was doing great, but when I set the toilet back on it rocks a fair amount. WTF right? The back is floating about 1/4" even after I sit on it. I'm pretty sure I've already decided to shim and walk from it, but I want to learn to do this better since I do have other properties to remodel in the future.

Will shims be fine here?

Should I install the flange on top of my cement board rather than on top of tile?

Am I just missing something obvious?

TIA y'all

I pushed the handle down and there was a snap sound. The handle went limp and when I pulled the back off, this stick was sitting on the bottom. I managed to grab it but the toilet is hissing like there is some kind of air leak. Please help.

I was wondering if anyone has either seen this fitting before or have any tips or tricks on removing it? it also has an active leak which is why i’m trying to remove it and replace the seals, if possible!

Help get rusted main sewer access open

Thumbnail

I am at a loss here. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get this drain access opened. It’s rusted shut. I sprayed PB blaster on it 36 hours ago, more 2 hours ago. Did nothing. I’ve tried using a pipe wrench but the space is small and awkward. I tried drilling into it to weaken it and break it off but no luck. Tried a metal reciprocating saw blade but broke it in 2 seconds.

Please. Help me. I’m too stubborn to call a plumber at this point.

Is this something someone without know-how could DIY or should I call a plumber?

Post image

I do not know the terminology very well, but my wife was trying to fix a clog and somehow what I believe is the tailpiece snapped off from the piece above. The metal looks nasty and corroded so I'm sure this was just a matter of time.

Is this something someone with little knowledge could fix with simple instruction or would I be out of my depth? I don't really know what words to use to describe the problem to begin looking up tutorials. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recently moved into a house with this shower and the smaller handheld shower head works fine but the large shower head doesn’t work. I have tried lifting the lever but nothing happens.

i have flow on both hot and cold but my the water temperature doesn’t change, and it’s only a problem for this sink. all other appliances in the home run hot. thought i could just go under and turn a knob but it won’t budge…any advice? i’ve tried prying on it with a flat head, and pliers
and even taking a hammer and tapping on it it try and get it to move either direction and it just won’t. even my main 1/4 turn at the bottom of the sink won’t budge…just would like to to my dishes with some hot water.

Sulfur / strong rotten egg smell

There’s a leak in the pipe under my kitchen sink. I didn’t notice but had periodically smelled rotten eggs and thought it was the trash. But, I just opened and took some stuff out and it stinks!!!! The drip is only when I turn the water in the sink on. Is this an emergency (like some kind of sewage or gas leak?) I live in a big apt building

Tight enough?

Thumbnail

I need to replace the fitting to my water softener.

I put a couple of rounds of tape and hand tightened the fitting in picture 1 as much as I dared, but there are still more thread showing than on the existing fitting as shown in picture 2.

Is that good enough, or do I need to tighten it more? And if so, any tips on how to do so without cracking or warping the fitting?

I had my bathroom redone a few months ago, and I’m just realizing that the waterline to the toilet presses against the wall tile. I haven’t had issues, but I’m curious if there are preventive measures or concerns long-term.

Why is my new sink/drain leaking?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Just installed a new vanity sink with a new Delta faucet & drain. The drain pipe component has a rubber gasket that fits perfectly over the sink hole when tightened by the big plastic ‘nut’. Everything was tight and seemed to match perfectly. Why is it still leaking? I’ve re-read the instructions where it suggests using silicone on the underside of the flange. But since the sink has an overflow channel, I don’t see a point in siliconing the drain flange. The water seems to be coming between the plastic nut and the pipe threads. What am I missing?

Moen Positemp valve depth - Did I get it wrong?

Thumbnail

Working to complete a full DIY bathroom renovation. I framed a new wall, positioned the new valve and (later) installed the shower myself, but had a licensed plumber do the actual hook up. He confirmed that the valve depth was set correctly before plumbing it in but now that I’m connecting the final hardware the handle is sticking out much further than expected.

I set the depth according to the “thick wall” instructions where the temporary plastic cover was set flush with the finished shower wall. Did I set it too far out or am I doing something wrong on the hardware installation? Photos added for context. Thanks in advance!

Smells from Water?

I just moved into a student housing apartment 2 weeks ago but my bathroom water smells and I believe that it comes from the water sources such as sink, toilet, and shower. It is not like a bacteria or rotting smell, but more chemically. Not sure how to explain the smell. It just strongly smells like public restroom. My whole bathroom smells this way. No one lived in this apartment for about 4 months. I searched it up and it said that the chemicals from the pipes may have leaked into the water while the place was vacant so I turned on all faucets/shower for 15 minutes but it still smells.

Turned my shower and and pipes started rattling

I just got home and turned my shower on and heard a horrible rattling. It sounded like a woodpecker on meth ( BBBBBRRRRRRRRR) so I quickly turned the shower off. Beneath my upstairs shower is another bathroom and that’s where the godawful noise came from. I decided to just flush the basement toilet and it immediately stopped. Any concerns with that? I’ve never heard that noise before should I be calling a plumber or just waiting? I have the shower running right now and nothing is going on. Thank you!

Dripping TPR valve?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all,

Looking for some advice here. Noticed my electric hot water heater’s TPR valve has a very minor drip to it. From what I’ve read, it’s thermal expansion, high pressure, or faulty valve. I’ve checked that the temp is within range (was at 125, just turned it a notch lower). Don’t believe the pressure is an issue, and I’ve tried flushing/exercising the valve to loosen any sediment build up. Despite that, there’s still a very minor drip as you can see from the photo. This appears to be a closed system and I don’t have an expansion tank.

That all being said, how concerning is this and how imperative is it to get it fixed? Is this “normal” for a closed system with no expansion tank?

Thanks in advance.
