ANNOUCEMENT Rule Change: "DM me" comments are no longer allowed

To combat scammers that rely on private interaction with users, we are no longer allowing comments asking users to message them privately for information or recommendations. Many scammers rely on this technique to prey on people. If you have a recommendation, advice, or information to share, please do so openly - which is the point of this subreddit. Some users try to skirt the rules this way, the "No Self-Promotion" rule, for example.

Please, be wary of anyone on Reddit trying to get you to communicate with them in private. Be cautious of anyone requiring you to dm them before they will give you advice or a recommendation.

I'm open to opinions and thoughts on this rule change, please feel free to voice your opinion.

Discussion Austin Dating - All Apolitical or secret Republicans?

• Upvotes

Preface: if you’re here to say “politics shouldn’t matter in a relationship” or “I can’t believe you would let someone’s political beliefs dictate your feelings” move on. It matters to me so I’m asking for advice from those who believe similarly.

I’m a mid 20s female (very liberal) who has recently moved to Austin and I’m starting to notice that 90% of the men on the apps just don’t put any political stance on their profile. In other cities I’ve lived in I would take that as them being secret republicans and really not give them my time of day. In Austin, I really can’t gauge if they are secret republicans or just all extremely apolitical / have no opinion or they are Democrats and just don’t have it listed (which is super odd to me). Why is it taboo in Austin to have your political stance on your profile? Bizarre to me

I’m curious what the other Democrat girlies out there have done to bring up this conversation and how it’s historically gone. I’ve been on dates here already where I bring it up on the first date and they just describe themselves as apolitical but with tons of republican friends but they themselves usually vote democrat (if they end up voting at all). I want to start bringing this up on text before the date so I stop wasting my time in person.

Would just love to hear from other democrats on their experience dating in Austin and if it’s similar!!

Help with breaking lease

I live at the Milo and can’t take it anymore. Between the roaches the constant water shut offs, and the AI desk agents I want to break the lease without having to pay their horrible fees (it’s RPM).

Any lawyers out there who can help me?

Nightlife 30/40s weekday spots?

Checking out places around town where women in their 30s and 40s hang out during the week rather than just weekends.

Instead of noisy college bars or late-night clubs, looking for spots with a mature, welcoming vibe like cozy cocktail lounges, neighborhood wine bars, or lively patios where people go after work for happy hour or late nights.

Where are your favorite local weekday go-tos for this age range, and what days or times usually have the best atmosphere for striking up a friendly conversation?

Moving 24M, transferring to Austin, would appreciate any help finding the right neighborhood.

Hi, I'm 24M, and my work is transferring me to work in Northern Austin, I am from a rural town in PA. I have never been to the city. I am very excited to be moving, but I am lost as to an area to live in. I have a car, and plan to drive to work everyday. I would like to be able to walk to the more sociable areas as I don't love driving in the city if I am just going out for drinks or something- but I don't know if it is worth it if that means sitting in traffic every day while going to work. I would be starting over socially as well, so an area that is surrounded less by established families would be better (hopefully that makes sense) I make about 100k/yr and based on what I can find, there are a lot of options, just need help deciding where.

Moving Moving to Austin from Houston looking for an apartment south of 183

I'm posting this for a female friend who is not on reddit. She has a dog and will be looking for a 1BDR apartment for under $2K a month, we're thinking Hyde Park, East Austin, Tarrytown, or Barton Hills. Not sure how well the budget fits in those areas, but her priorities are that it is safe and the property is well maintained. Looking for general advice about the area or any particular apartments that folks want to call out. The Domain is possible but I'm not sure she wants to be quite that far north of the city.

Employment Looking for gigs / jobs during the day 8-5

Hi everyone. I’m a 30 year old single mom. I recently lost my job because I can’t work the hours anymore now that my kid is in school. I’ve been doing some catering as much as they need me but I still have 2-4 days a week sometimes that I really need be working.
I don’t want to put my work experience on here just in case someone I know comes across this.. and my work experience would very much give me away haha.
My kid’s dad is basically non existent. I’m struggling to make ends meet. If anybody has any gigs OR honestly even like a legit 8 or 9-5 job I would be so grateful to talk to you about it.. thank you in advance

Shopping & Gifts Ideas for local gifts for kids abroad?

I have some young cousins in another country and every year we send them a package of local toys and candies for Christmas. We try to buy unique local Austin, Texas, or American-inspired things from small businesses. The kids are now aged 10 to teenage.

Can't ship anything too heavy, smaller and lighter is always appreciated. Always trying to think about things they can use to play with other kids or that can spark conversation.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Here is what we have done in the past:

Wood toy guns - Terra Toys

Rattlesnake eggs joke - Terra Toys

Scorpion lollipops - 3 Star Candy Shop

Scorpion in a marble - Nature's Treasures

Metal Earth scorpion and spider modelling kits - Terra Toys

Wood bat modeling kit - Blue Genie Holiday Bazaar

Austin FC jerseys

"I Spy" retro road trip boards - Dragon's Lair

Western bandanas - Sendero Provisions

American comics - Tribe

Rocks collected in Alpine

When will we say enough is enough regarding these police escorts. This is ridiculous. These are public roads, and the people that are getting the escorts are not government officials. They are private citizens.

Mobile Carrier Performance in DT

with the influx of folks in town, carrier service has been spotty at best. frequent connection drops, slow speeds, or straight up unusable until I hit a coffee shop with wifi.

I have the pink carrier (not via mvno, so I don’t think it’s throttling or deprioritization). Is the red or blue carrier any better?

Goods & Services Tattoo Artist Recommendations

Looking to get a full forearm color piece. Looking for an artist that will work with me on the design. Possibly do a couple of drafts before committing to the final piece.

No real price restrictions. Just looking for great color work. With great lines, as there will be some numbers and lettering as part of it.

Experiences with Hagan’s Restoration & Construction/flooring contractor recs?

Anyone have experiences working with Hagan’s Restoration & Construction. They were recommended to me by an engineering group here but I have been burned by other engineering firms before on their contractors.

Or any suggestions for a good contractor that can remove a section of laminate flooring to gain access to subfloor for an inspection? Removal is in my master bedroom so looking for people that wont completely wreck it and do the proper covering of the room with plastic.

Help! Advice please

Hellooo! I was looking for advice on what to do if I think I'm actively being stalked and have been for the past how ever many months?(6+ probably)

I don't know who the target is in my house, but its gotten to the point where we think its obviously me and my mom. When the man (who we think it is) thought we were alone, he tried "closing our back door for us because it was open". Which is weird, because it wasn't. He said he did it because our dogs were out, but 2/3 were in the bedroom with my mom and her ex bf and the 3rd was in the living room sitting in a chair out of sight. I was in my room watching tv.

Anyhow. The dogs jump up, and run the the living room. We all assume they're just going to bark at dogs passing by, so we pay no mind. Then we hear someone yell"get the fuck away from me" then growling n rocks scattering around.

Having said that, he would've had to been on the porch already. Only reason we couldn't have heard him walking across the rocks to our porch is bc of our tv's being loud. And with the back door, if the dogs got out we would've know bc our backdoor makes a lot of noise when sliding open quickly, unless you make and effort to open it very carefully. Either way, all our dogs were either with us, or chilling. So he HAD to have been opening the door to get in for him not to be heard at all and not triggering the dogs before/while doing so.

Our dog ended up attacking him after he kicked him and yelled. Our dog ended up leaving like, a decently deep 2 inch wound on the upper part of his forearm. He kept blaming it on us and we took the blame at first until after.

But anyway, we were trying to help him and he said he was going to the ER and left. We thought that was the end of his then he CAME BACK, KNOCKING ON THE BACK DOOR. Like bro. We come out and he has a paper towel on his arm saying stuff like "yeah btw im gonna have to go to the ER still, do you have his shots records"- yadayadaya. Then he leaves again and mind you, there was no car he left in or anything, we dont know where he went. We're like 80% sure he does live in our complex. He never reported us to the office but a bystander did only out of concern. Manager didnt care and thought he was stupid for what he did. We haven't seen him since. The reason I bring this up again is because my mom's ex just got home, when back outside the backdoor to take off his boots, and came in with a bag. Looking confused he asks us about it. There's peach rings (his favorite), granola (very common snack for me), and Spanish rice (my mom used to cook with very often). We're SO confused. Me and my mom have been inside for hours just chilling, we never ordered anything and even checked to make sure. The only time we've been gone was mom 6am-12pm, her ex 5am-9pm, and me 10am -12pm (I was with my mom). Never once brought anything home, and he didnt bring anything home either. So someone left it there and we have no idea who.

Having said that, any ideas on what to do?

Heads up, I am a minor so just keep that in mind with questions and ideas.

Austin area artists chime in!!!

I’m an austin area artist trying to get into vending at local markets. My biggest barrier is I have no idea how/where to turn my physical paintings into high quality art prints. Does anyone who sells prints have advice? I understand it’ll be an investment, but wanting something manageable financially for an artist just starting their journey to selling! Thank you so much!

Moving First time visiting Austin (and Texas) — anything I should know?

Hey guys

I’m 28F, originally from Atlanta, and I’ve been living in Miami for the past fourish years.

For whatever reason, I’ve felt really drawn to Austin for the last 18 months or so. I’m finally making the trip next weekend.

I’ve never been to Texas before, so I’m coming in with an open mind. I’m also loosely considering relocating.
I’d love to hear from locals:

What should I know before visiting Austin for the first time?

What do you love about living in Austin, and what do you wish you’d known sooner?

I’d especially love to hear from anyone who’s lived in Atlanta or Miami and can compare the experience.

Excited to finally check out y’alls city.

Visiting Possible Relocation

Looking at a job that's in Austin and requires on site 2x a week. Never been to Austin but it's a great opportunity so curious. Company is offering relocation so I would have the opportunity to fly down and visit areas but am going in blind.

Where are the best areas for an early 30s, single woman? Income is $150k so 1bedroom for $2500 or under (recs would be great!)

Also... are there really that many roaches? 😬

Police Escorts

First formula 1 race, you guys know any other way to move people from point a to point b without using police escorts, I don’t even know if the sirens are real anymore or my brain is fried from listening to them non stop. Helicopter, highways, etc work everywhere else, why not here?

Nightlife Build a “I experienced Austin” agenda if someone was coming into town for a weekend…

If a friend was coming to town for 48 hours, what would you select for them to do to leave feeling like they really EXPERIENCED Austin with only 6 moves. Doesn’t have to be your personal fave things, just to give someone the “I did Austin” experience.

Pick:

2 restaurants

2 entertainment

1 bar

1 Dealer’s Choice

Mine would be:

Franklins and Guero’s

A show at Comedy Mothership and The Bats

Lala’s

Barton Springs Pool
