This month marked the release of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning Deluxe Limited Edition. If you are curious exactly what makes it different from the original, I'll break it down for you.

-This luxurious new edition comes with a gold foil stamped cover art, while the rest of the cover has a printed design which mimics the look of leather.

-It has beautifully colored edges, which may look familiar if you are a longtime fan; as it originally comes from the cover art from The Bad Beginning Rare Edition, from many years ago.

-Lastly, it has passages for the characters that appear in this book, accompanied by brand new illustrations drawn by Brett Helquist. Some of these include characters never illustrated before.

As a life-long enthusiast of Lemony Snicket, I can't recommend this book enough, whether you thinking of getting a copy of it for yourself or an unfortunate colleague.

Question/Doubt Significant of Wormwood Tea

I've recently finished re-reading the books and I'm trying to break down the significance of wormwood tea as is mentioned by Kit and Lemony. Wormwood tea, being bitter, means it lacks sugar. The Snickets stand very firm on only enjoying bitter tea, meaning they would never use the sugarbowl in a tea set. However, Wormwood is poisonous in high doses. And traditionally it has been used to heal parasitic infections (though it isnt proved whether or not it works). I'm just curious how people may connect all of this to the story since they mention it quite a bit. I guess I haven't thought much on the Snickets stance on the use of the sugar bowl, but considering this it doesn't seem like they would ever consume it themselves. I'd like to hear any thoughts on what this could mean, no interpretation is wrong!

Question/Doubt Why was count olaf so dedicated to being mean to the kids?

Why was Count Olaf so dedicated to being mean to the kids? Looking at it from the perspective of the series as a child seeing the world etc... I understand his desperation to have the kids for the money but he seemed to just need those kids to control and abuse as well. I don't get why if he just wanted money, he may have given the kids a bearable home? Is there a purpose within the idea of him as a literary device?

So I was doing another re watch and in the one where they go to the academy in part one the gym teacher on the bus says when it runs down around 07:48 she says this which makes me think it’s probably set late sixties to early seventies. I especially think this due to the overall vibe of the shows outfits and building. What do we think?

Discussions Had Uncle Monty or Aunt Josephine ever met or seen Count Olaf in person in A Series of Unfortunate Events before he showed up in disguise in their respective books as Stephano and Captain Sham?

So it is revealed later in the series well after Uncle Monty and Aunt Josephine's deaths that they were both a part of VFD and were members on the noble side. But considering that Count Olaf was also part of VFD, had they actually ever have met or seen him in person before he showed up in disguise in the respective books they were the guardian of the Bauldelaires?

Discussions any retcons in the book series?

I’ve been thinking about what possible retcons there could have been in the books, since the series is so long and I’m not sure when the final book should have slotted in or if it was always planned to be 13 books

Discussions Anyone think ASOUE should get a Graphic novel adaptation?

I feel like the way the art was done in the books would transfer well in graphic novel form, as well as the distinguished character designs and especially certain moments from the books. I know the film and show were already made, but a graphic novel could be something for new readers espcaily in this generation.

Question/Doubt Is the VFD telescope feasible in real life?

I doubt it’s possible to create one that possesses all the features and abilities we see in the series, but could we at least build one capable of decoding hidden codes or functioning as a lighter?

Books 20-year anniversary of the completion of the book series!

Post image

Last Tuesday (October 13) was the 20th anniversary of the publication of The End, the final book in the ASOUE series. I found myself reminiscing about October 13, 2006 (which was a Friday the 13th!) and how excited I was to get home from school that day and start reading the copy of The End which my dad had made sure to buy that morning after dropping me off at school. I also went to a book release party at Borders bookstore (RIP) that evening. It wasn't as big as Harry Potter release parties, but there was a crowd of us dedicated ASOUE fans who turned up!

I feel so nostalgic for those days, when my elementary/middle school friends and I used to talk about the ASOUE books and just share our theories with each other, and the internet wasn't exploding with a million influencers posting their theories on social media. I remember reading The End and feeling happy to recognize almost all the classic island story allusions and character names from Robinson Crusoe, The Tempest, and Moby Dick, given that I didn't really recognize the literary allusions in the previous books too well at that time. I remember the sublime feeling of bittersweet satisfaction and hope in my heart when I got to the end of The End, and I loved the way the classic poem "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" was incorporated into the ending (no spoilers for people who haven't read the whole series yet!).

If you were also a young fan of ASOUE in those days and remember eagerly awaiting / reading The End on October 13, 2006, please share your memories of how you experienced the grand finale of the book series!

Hello friends I’ve just thought of a question and discussion for y’all. When do you think the Baudelaires were the closest to actually capturing count Olaf.

Question/Doubt Can you prove or disprove my theory using evidence from the books ?

What do you think of my theory? After finishing all 13 books and the Netflix series, I’ve come to believe that the Baudelaires gradually become more like Count Olaf themselves. They begin using disguises, deception, and morally grey tactics to survive, eventually crossing some of the same moral boundaries as Olaf, including becoming involved in arson. The only thing that truly separates them from him, in my opinion, is their ability to feel grief, guilt, and regret over their actions. Do you agree, or do you think I’m taking the comparison too far?

I’m practicing my colouring skills, and I think we can all agree that the cover of The Bad Beginning does shadows so beautifully!

It was really fun trying to get the undertones right, and I’m very proud of how it turned out. I’m not entirely happy with Violet and Klaus’s faces, but that’s mostly down to my pen skills 😂 I’m also still trying to figure out which paper works best. This paper definitely couldn’t handle all the layers, and as a result looks like it’s gotten slightly damp

If anyone has any tips or feedback I would appreciate it!

Discussions Lemony Snicket Playlist

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0r4RcPKq0YrPXzwBDDGn8s?si=zVd5EtqdSt-WqRwcOmQJjQ&utm_source=copy-link&pi=JrVB7P4LSla2I

I made a playlist on Spotify with a bunch of music based of the ASOUE tv show, movie, ATWQ, and all of Snicket's works. This music is really fun to listen to while reading. I'm pretty sure that this is the longest Asoue/Atwq playlist on Spotify, and I think that it's one of the best. Every song is clean, and most are instrumental. Make sure to shuffle. Enjoy!
