RANT - The number of political texts this year is too damn high!

The political texts this mid-term season are driving me crazy. And as my grandfather used to say..."That's walking distance". Not to mention the number of texts from roofers and landscapers looking for new business.

To-do Anyone signed the cidercade waiver?

Tried to go to cidercade and was met with the new waiver. It has been a little bit since I’ve been so I’m not sure when this went into effect. We were told we had to sign it or we couldn’t go in. My partner and I read through it and it’s crazy!!

The things that you agree to in the document are insane for an arcade. You cannot sue for any injury or illness. It literally any or all viruses and bacteria’s - not their problem. Allows cidercade to take photo and video of you at any time and use for whatever they want. Also if you sue them for any reason - they can pick whichever court favors them best and you have to reimburse any party they involve for whatever legal costs.

Cidercade has gone down hill for years. Broken machines. Sticky floors. Kids everywhere. I kept going thinking “this time it will be better!” definitely never going back again.

TLDR: cidercade already sucked and has started to require a weird waiver to go now.

Neighbors in the Montopolis/Roy G area, please keep an eye out for Oslo!

My very sweet boy Oslo got out late Saturday night/early Sunday morning on Lily Terrace. We have not seen him since. Already registered him as lost with his microchip and have canvassed the neighborhood with flyers/put up missing pet posts in Facebook groups, Nextdoor, etc. posting here just in case I can catch some more eyes.

Oslo is three years old, incredibly friendly and cuddly, quite vocal, and about 13 pounds. All black long hair with like five little white furs on his chest, and his belly is an off brownish tint. He looks a bit Maine Coon-ish but is not. He is not an outdoor cat but we allow him supervised outdoor time so he is fairly comfortable outside.

My partner and I and our two other cats miss him dearly and would do anything to get him home. Please reach out if you have any info.

Ask Austin Neighbor flipped house and made airbnb with a pickleball court, am I cooked?

The court is right against the chain link fence 5 feet from my house and I can hear people picklin' from my living room and bedroom. I'm worried people will rent it out for parties/tournaments etc or people will be there all the time. Is there anything I can do? I would understand if someone built a pickleball court for their own use, but to build one specifically for an airbnb without talking to any of the neighbors doesn't seem that awesome. There are 5 yards that connect with theirs, fyi, but my house is physically the closest.

"The mediator between the head and the hands must be the heart". I'm a local photographer, and I've been using the superstructures in downtown Austin as a canvas to experiment with black & white photography. These photos are an attempt to make this two square mile area evoke the feeling and cinematography of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, a city divided by its businessmen and its citizens.

Lost pet Found dog in Manor

Young intact male chihuahua mix found on WT Gallaway St in the Presidential Glenn neighborhood on 10/26.

He has a blue collar with no tag. Microchip unknown.

Disposition:

Very friendly with people. Appears to be dog friendly (though mine is not so exact temperament is untested).

Body codition:

Appears healthy. BCS 4, Bright/alert/responsive, clean healthy coat, no ectoparasites observed, groomed nails, no apparent wounds, hydrated.

I have posted him in the neighborhood group. It seems most likely that he lives in the area somewhere. I can keep him for today, but my doberman is not friendly with other dogs and will harm him given the chance. This worries me greatly.

Allergy Fall Seasonal Allergies - WTF Austin?

I love Austin, but this is terrible. My skin and eyes itch. My throat burns. I have nagging allergy headaches after years between migraines. Since last week this has become unbearable. When will it be over?

A magnificent, 300-year-old heritage live oak needs protection from Austin Energy's over-pruning

Posting for a friend:

Do you know anyone in the media, local government, City Council, or the legal community who might help me protect a magnificent, 300-year-old heritage live oak on my property from potentially devastating over-pruning by Austin Energy?

A representative of Austin Energy has made what he calls “concessions” to obtain my written permission to come onto my property, but they are vague and I have no reason to trust them. Neighbors tell me they say one thing and do another. He has also threatened “full clearance" on several occasions if I refuse to sign. That’s why I need to better understand what they can or cannot do.

Even a single connection could make all the difference. About 20 years ago, an Austin City Councilmember intervened and the tree was treated carefully and some wires were rerouted. Later taller poles were put in bringing the live wires above the tree. I’m hoping that, with the right contacts or advice, we might find a way to ensure only what is necessary.

I believe this may be the largest, oldest tree in North Austin. Austin Energy's proposed cuts would essentially remove an entire section of its canopy, leaving it with an L-shaped outline and permanently destroying much of its natural beauty and character. A tree that has survived an estimated 300 years deserves better than to have its form so drastically altered if a more limited approach can provide the necessary clearance.

Although my property is just outside Austin city limits, making it ineligible for the City’s heritage tree protections, it extends over the boundary into an Austin Energy easement.

Ask Austin Flamingo Cantina is celebrating their 35th anniversary this weekend! What memories do y’all have of the place?

Hey y’all,

I started working with the owner of Flamingo Cantina (a downtown music venue) helping her with some stuff. The venue originally opened on Halloween in 1991 (seems like ages ago) when Austin was a very different place. We want to feature people in the community and their experiences with the Cantina over the years and I figured Reddit would be a great place to hear from folks! I have a few questions for yall:

1) What are some of your memories of Flamingo Cantina, whether with shows, staff or ownership?

2) For the longtime Austinites, do you have any memories of Austin in 1991 or just the early 90s you want to share? These can either be of downtown or just the region as a whole.

3) what do you want to see more of at Flamingo? We’re trying to make the club more accessible to new Austinites while still keeping the same culture that has made it relevant for 35 years!

Ask Austin which is the "fun" strip club?

I remember one time I had to deliver some food into Chicas Bonitas and it just seemed like a great vibe with everyone laughing and having a good time in there. Never just went there for fun but now wish I had since it's gone. Where's the good vibe now?

The old West Sixth Street bridge has been there since 1887. The creek under it once carried entire houses.

I was walking across the Shoal Creek bridge on West Sixth the other day and went down a little history rabbit hole afterward.

Apparently that bridge dates back to 1887. During the massive flood in 1915, houses were swept downstream and piled up around the bridge. The water got so high that streetcars couldn't cross.

I've walked over that creek more times than I can count. Most days it's just a little patch of water and trees between buildings. You barely register it.

That's the part I can't stop thinking about. You can be standing on an ordinary downtown street, waiting for the light to change, in a spot where the entire landscape once looked completely different.

I kind of wish we had more visible high-water markers around the city. Not just a little historical plaque with dates, but something that actually shows you where the water reached. It's hard to wrap your head around Austin's flood history when the creek looks so harmless most of the year.

Anyway, if you walk down West Sixth this week, take ten seconds to look at the bridge instead of the traffic. It's a pretty incredible piece of the city hiding in plain sight.

Curious what other completely ordinary-looking places around Austin have a history like that.
