A library of resources to help the world learn

Hello all you mechanics, technicians and maintenance personnel out there,

I've recently finished AMT School and gotten my A&P Certification, currently still in school for to get my GROL & AET Certification. But in the nearly two years I've been in school, I've amassed quite a large library of study guides, notebooks and reference material. You can find it here:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Alf4AQNY3cyaRiNg6MKeZy2eJgybeZN2?usp=sharing

A contents breakdown:

  • Block Notes: PowerPoints of every subject I studied in school
  • Additional Certification: AET & GROL studies
  • Advisory Circulars of note in training
  • Avionics studies
  • E-books: A library of textbooks across the industry
  • FARs
  • IA Study guide
  • King Audio/Video: Video lectures on nearly every subject, and mp3s of those to listen when you can’t watch
  • Notebooks: my notebooks, from school, scanned into PDF
  • Study Guides: this is the big folder - Audio and Written study guides for all three written tests and the Oral exam
  • TCDS relevant to my schooling
  • Tool catalogues - because we all need tools
  • And a mac & cheese recipe (because you can't study on an empty stomach)

I've built this to be used by the students at my school, but there's a whole helluva lot useful to anyone studying for an A&P, or any other Certification. I maintain it on the regular and update occasionally, when I get through a significant portion of schooling enough to upload something new. So one day you might check it and be like "Ah! He's gotten on to studying for his IA! Cool." And these resources are for everyone. I ask no compensation for it, some men just want to watch the world learn.

So my pitch to the mods was: sticky this link on the sidebar of the subreddit, so those who are looking for guidance on how to get an A&P can be directed there.

I figured putting it there would be better - since it wouldn't need to be stickied to the top of the feed or just keep getting posted.

Take a look at the Drive and see what you think. Be advised, the technical manuals and reference materials were really what was used for our school and are posted there -FOR REFERENCE ONLY-. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS refer to current and applicable manufacturers maintenance manuals or other approved data for real-world maintenance. And if there's something out there that you think would be useful to add to it, message me here on reddit or shaunthesailor87@gmail(dot)com and we'll put heads together to see what we can come up with.

I'm often one to quote wiser men than I am so I'll leave you all with one from Bruce Lee:

"Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own."

Trying to take the old flap tape off for brand new vinyl tape, but it doesn’t want to come off cleanly. Attempted using plastic razor blades with heat gun but it still doesn’t want to come off cleanly. Any ideas?

Aircraft Switch Symbology help

• Upvotes

I have an aircraft I work on that has some two position buttons that have been messed with and pulled apart.  The buttons still work as designed, power on, the lower section lights up, push it in and it locks in and the upper section lights up.

The problem is, the symbology is gone and so are the green tint window for one of the sections, as it the outline for the “block” where the symbology is.

Is there somewhere I can source having these thin, plastic symbology’s made?

TIA

Prospective mechanic, what am I not thinking about?

I know there are a ton of posts in here asking if the job is worth it, pros and cons, etc. I apologize in advance for a possible repeat question.

I’m looking into A&P classes either in the spring or the following fall. I’m 34, I’ve been working as a mechanics assistant, basically a gopher, at a small MRO for about a year now. I’m doing some cleaning, mostly I’m assisting the inspector with NDT and visual inspections. I’ve been enjoying it, and before this I spent three years at a different MRO in an admin role. I want to pursue the A&P certification to make myself more valuable and to earn more money. My goal is to exceed $30 per hour.

Through other posts here, I’ve read that the hours can be fairly long, especially overnights as a new tech. I know I have to supply my own tools, which seems standard for most mechanic jobs in any industry.

What aspects, good or bad, am I not thinking about? What are the things I don’t know that I don’t know?

A&P line mx

Hey everyone! I recently got hired as an A&P line mechanic and was curious what other line mechanics use to carry their tools on the line.

I’ve seen some mechanics using Pelican cases and others using Milwaukee PACKOUT bags, so I’m interested in hearing what works best for you guys.

What do you prefer, and why? Any recommendations for something durable, easy to carry around the aircraft, and practical for line maintenance would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Outside of actually doing the work, what would you say are the biggest time sinks?

Pretty new apprentice here, about 4-5 months in. I was at the lunch table with a few of the other workers and they were chatting about the title.

One said that looking up component records and going through each of them was a huge time sink, another said that looking through the manuals was a massive time sink.

Got me thinking, what other parts of the job outside of actually doing the maintenance work are time sinks

The next venture

Hey everybody, I am currently a Union Ironworker and fell in love with planes. I have been at home mechanic all my life(im 30) and want to get into the field of Aviation. Im not so good on the paying a school thing and am looking for a OJT while I study. Around my area in Indiana I have not been able to find any OJT training and was curious if anybody knows some. Thanks in advance!

Aeronca KC 4 1/2” skull cap spinner

Hello! So, I believe I am looking for something non-existent. I would love to find a 4 1/2” skull cap spinner for my wall hanger in the photos. I don’t think they were ever offered for this application, if ever at all. I measured (twice) the area where the cap would sit and is 4 1/2”. I have scoured the web, I can only find 5”, which is too big. Thanks for any help!

Anyone have experience working on the AW-169?

Western Canadian here. Our provincial government began using the AW-169 as a province wide medivac helicopter in 2025. Just wondering how people found this helicopter to work on.

Hi,

I'm searching for some contact information on a maintenance manager/hangar chief at Lufthansa Technic in Hamburg. We are a class of B1 engineers, graduating from the Danish Aviation School later this year, heading on a field trip to Hamburg.

I hope someone can help, any help is appreciated - more information can be shared in a private message.

How to Interpret AMM

I am currently an Intern and learning how to interpret and apply AMM procedures. When evaluating an AMM procedure, should we follow the Job Set-Up of a referenced subtask before proceeding with the specific procedure required by the main task?

For example, my main task is the removal of the MLG, and one of its procedures requires the removal of the shoot bolt, which directs me to a subtask titled “Removal of Tertiary Lock.” However, upon reviewing the subtask, I found a specific procedure for the removal of the shoot bolt in its later section.

In this case, how should we interpret the AMM procedure? Should we follow the Job Set-Up of the referenced subtask first before proceeding with the shoot bolt removal procedure, or should we proceed directly to the specific procedure for removing the shoot bolt?

787 yellow windows

Post image
308 Upvotes

Hello, not sure if this is the right place to put this, couldn’t think of anywhere else to put this post

For reference, I am not a mechanic or anyone who works with airplanes, so if this is against the rules, feel free to delete this

I have a question, and I wanted to know, why is it on the Boeing 787, why is it that sometimes, the windows are yellow, and some are not? On the 3 of 4 flights I’ve had on the Dreamliner, all of them had me on a yellow window, while other passengers were working fine

Is it because they’re old? And needing replacing?

For context, it is a TUI 787-8 from Glasgow to Cancun,

If this isn’t the right place to put it, could somebody kindly tell me where I should I post this?

Also, the picture isn’t edited, that’s how it looked. Had to dim the window in flight to be able to not have a yellow colour

Does Delta TechOps do hair follicle testing for pre-employment?

I'm an A&P mechanic considering applying to Delta TechOps at MSP or ATL

Does anyone who's recently been hired as an AMT know whether Delta requires a hair follicle test for pre-employment, or is it just the standard DOT urine test?

I've heard different things about airlines doing additional hair testing, so I'm specifically curious about Delta's maintenance positions rather than flight crews.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who's gone through the hiring process recently. Thanks!

Ex-Spirit mechanics: when did you see the writing on the wall?

As someone who's staking their claim in the airline industry, I'd like to hear your opinions about when it's time to think about jumping ship. Did you know it was coming, and if so, what were the signs?

I'd also like to hear about your experience of finding a new job and how you're doing now, if you feel like sharing.

Thanks for reading!

Rivet buck tails

Learning how to rivet at AME school right now and struggling with my buck tails/shop heads. What is more important? The 1.5D width or the 0.5D height? Because I can't seem to get both lined up perfectly.

American Airman Ground / Heritage Flight Academy in Long Island, New York

Has anyone here gone through their A&P Mechanic Course? How was the O&P preparation part of the course?

Do you get hands-on practice to become familiar and comfortable with practicals?

Also, do you have any DME recommendations in the area?

For anyone familiar with both, how does their program compare to Baker’s in Tennessee, especially for O&P preparation.

Thanks, guys! I appreciate your input.
