Tabletop BattleTech Buyer's Guide 2026

Post image

Attempted to update my BattleTech Buyer's Guide from years past for 2026.

Admittedly, it was impossible to not include a bunch of caveats in the graph itself, given that the line is in flux with the Core products only partially replacing what is in Total Warfare (and not explicitly invalidating them in the text, like Total Warfare did).

Props to the Catalyst Demo Team and some of the proofers of the Core Rulebook for their feedback on this diagram. I hope this helps people who are looking to get into the BattleTech tabletop games!

EDIT: Admittedly, I was more focused on the "classic" BattleTech elements and the state of the line when putting this together, since it's REALLY confusing right now. However, BattleTech Aces is also a thing and is an excellent expansion to the BattleTech: Alpha Strike line. Those boxes are a natural fit after buying either the Alpha Strike Box Set (as it is a dependency for the Aces boxes) or the Alpha Strike Commander's Edition rulebook.

EDIT 2: A slightly more updated version of the buyer's guide can be found here. This includes information about BattleTech: Aces in the admonitions and describes Alpha Strike as a faster-paced, larger-scale modern wargame instead of as a simplified ruleset.

Don't pay too much attention to the lance composition (extremely new player still overwhelmed by the sheer amount of options), just pretend it makes sense.

A little cleaner than how I normally paint my minis, but given its an Emperor and it would not be fielded as often due to its rarity, having a cleaner paint job makes sense

Question โ“ Megastructures: Who can build them and when can they exist?

I'm mainly wondering about civilian megastructures like large scale space colonies or dome complexes

Meme Personally, I think Gauss rifles are better suited to Inner Sphere 'Mechs.

Personally, I think Gauss rifles are better suited to Inner Sphere 'Mechs.

I love seeing Inner Sphere 'Mechs bending over backwards to cram two or three Gauss rifles into their designs.

Honestly, I think mounting more than one Gauss rifle on a Clan 'Mech is a waste.

But I do think HAGs are great. Just give me a 'Mech armed with two HAG/40s.

These are a smaller format, but include the no section versions as well, six total. The Warhammer was recycled in the latest set of four.

The Shadow Hawk IIC! Personally I find it to be one of if not the most aesthetically pleasing of the IIC glow ups. I really like the head in particular as it reminds me of a Leo from Gundam Wing. This fella is mech number 50 in my DCMS Battalion+ collection - 2 mechs short of a square battalion with a handful of options at my disposal. Unfortunately I am not quite sure how much time I will have available to me to round out my DCMS as I've got WoW Forever in a week plus Snowblind qill have me swap gears back to my Ghost Bears for the 8 mechs in there plus a Clan Cavalry box (I'm lacking in second line units since my CGB collection was driven by the 3052 RAT which was most full of frontline Omnis) as well as some loose single mechs (Kontio, Wendigo, Blood Asp, and a few others to make another star from the Core Box.) Let me know as always what you think but this one may be the last new DCMS mech for a while tho I may try and push to get 2 more mechs done to round things out - thinking a shrapnel inspired sword wielding Hatchetman 5K kitbash thats already underpainted and one more maybe a Firestarter or something else.

Lore Where are all the Knights?

I'm doing some lore research planning an NPC for a campaign, a Knight Errant on quest, and have realized that for all the Fuedal trappings of Battletech (especially the classic LosTech era) and mentions of people with titles... we see very few knightly orders named. In later lore the Knights of the Inner Sphere and Knights of the Republic are large organization, but the tiny Brotherhood of Randis seems to be the best known in the classic era.

Am I missing something? Where are all the chivalric orders?

Question โ“ Elite Great house mech units

For each of the Great houses which mech units would be considered the best in the nation? I'm guessing for the Combine its the Sword of Light and for the Federated Suns its the various Davion guard units. Maybe the Red Lancers for the Capellans and 10th Lyran Guard for the Commonwealth? And no idea whatsoever for the League.

Question โ“ Submitted a story to Shrapnel, been stuck at 25 for a month, is this time length normal?

Post image

In April I submitted a story to the Shrapnel Magazine, I'm curious if others have had such a significant turn around time? I've seemed advice from this reddit before about short stories so was curious if others had also had issues. Screenshot added. Its been under review 198 days but the average response is 45? And still 25 people ahead of me and that's been stuck for a while.

Discussion Dezgra Opinion Incoming

I think the lore and universe of BattleTech are absolutely fascinating. The history, politics, cultures, and overall setting are super cool. But personally, I find the big stompy robots to be the least interesting thing in a game about big stompy robots.

Obviously this is no disrespect to anyone who loves the mechs themselves, I just prefer the setting to the mechs.

Question โ“ Stalker versus Awesome usage

Iโ€™m coming from a mechwarrior 5 context but am also curious about the tabletop game.

Why would one use a stalker versus the awesome? Theyโ€™re both slow light assault mech powerhouses on the attack and defense. But in MW5, stalkers are held back a bit IMO because of their vulnerable right shoulder, which is easily focused down with lasers, PPCs, or concentrated LBX or machinegun fire at closer ranges. Ammo explosion soon follows. The awesomeโ€™s damage output is consistent, and can be further bolstered with PPC-X (the shotgun-like PPC variant), and canโ€™t die due to ammo blasts.

Iโ€™m guessing the stalkerโ€™s LRMs have many more applications in a wargame with humans (instead of largely dumb AI) with other narrative or metagame considerations.

Tabletop 3025 mechs with Rockstar Mechwarriors...

Against assets of the current ilkhan era. I've had great luck with a regular'ol 'Awesome 8Q. With a 2/3 Mechwarrior The thing just won't go down. I've been impressed by the ability to out last and still be functional. Wondered if you other folks had the same experience or what happened if you used the classics Against the modern era
