Local Advice needed Independent Pubs of Brighton (and surrounds) MEGA THREAD
After the announcement of surge pricing in Laine pubs and finding out who actually owns them and just how many of our establishments they own I thought it'd be a nice idea to have a list of pubs in Brighton that are independent. Ones that are free of the B.S. of several layers of 'financial arrrangements' obscuring where our beer tokens are going. Maybe one day we can have a little map in our pockets to refer to when our guard may be down because it's cold and windy outside or we have had a few, we can take a quick look and find an establishment near by that we want to support to prevent them turning into another chain pub without anyone really noticing.

Local Advice needed West Pier Promenade Plank?
I walked along the beach earlier to try find some debris from the recent West Pier collapse and came across this large plank really close to the old pier, and I’m wondering if it is part of the promenade.
I’ve been doing some research and apparently the square-head bolt holes are what you would expect, and the wood looks consistent with the Douglas Fir they used.
I don’t know anything about wood though, is anyone able to help identify if I am correct?

Local Advice needed Hi everyone….
Maybe a bit of a strange one but tomorrow is my little boy’s 7th Birthday but his mother has alienated me from him as she wants a new family. Will not even let me leave a present on the doorstep.
I am worried about sitting indoors all day tomorrow with my own hurt, I don’t have a TV or Playsation for that matter, or money to distract me.
Was wondering if anyone knew of any community places, board games, ping pong, that sort of thing?
Don’t want to play the pity card as I love him so much and as bad as it may seem, I need a distraction for the day.
Also if any knows of any volunteers needed over Christmas, I’m a 20 years experienced chef and would be happy to help those in need.
Thanks,
Matt

Arts and Crafts West pier prior to collapse (2024/5) on expired black and white film stocks.
Given the recent partial collapse I thought I'd upload some 2024/5 expired black and white images I had of it.

Local Advice needed Does anyone have a clear raincoat I could borrow 🙏🙏
Hellooo people for context : I had a Halloween costume planned to go as Patrick Bateman (cause it was the only one I already had everything for) but I don’t have the clear raincoat cause I was planning on getting it online but I forgot I had an event today and the earliest I could get it delivered is tomorrow. If anyone has one they’d be willing to lend before 10pm today I’d be glad to pick it up and return it whenever you’d like

Local events 🎸 🎭 Brighton Mafia Club - Are you a fan of Traitors or looking for free social events?
Good afternoon Brighton Citizens!
I'm one of the organisers for Brighton Mafia Club and we meet at the Islingword Inn near Queen's Park on Wednesday's from 6pm.
Mafia is a social deduction game, that plays similar to the round table of Traitors. A game is made up from 10 players + 1 moderator and everyone takes turn to speak for up to one minute giving their suspicions on who may be Citizens, or who may be Mafia. One player is voted out, and then at night the Mafia remove one player from the game. This is repeated until either the Citizens or the Mafia win.
We play rolling games from 6pm and each game takes 30-40 minutes. It's free (the pub kindly let us use their function room so usual pub food and drink rules apply). Events currently attract between 15 and 30 players.
We're looking to increase the player base of the club by running more explicitly beginner friendly games over the coming months - so come along, make friends and play Mafia. If you enjoy it there are opportunities to play competitively, in opens and tournaments and even qualify for the World Cup. We also have tons of out-of-game socials with all our lovely members.
It's free to attend and you can find more information on our MeetUp page where you can mark yourself down as attending if you'd like to come and give us an indication of numbers we can expect each week. You can also watch videos or find out more about the game.
Feel free to message me any questions and we look forward to playing with you all soon!
Brighton Mafia Club is an inclusive event for all backgrounds, races, gender expressions and sexualities and your values must reflect ours if you want to take part.

Photos Photos of the west pier after the collapse i took today
You can now see the west concrete balcony is completely gone after storm Austen. The main pavilion framework is now completely isolated with no support apart from its original struts. This could mean it is now even more unstable and the remaining time above water the structure has probably significantly decreased.

Local Advice needed Gym recommendations
Does anyone have any gym recommendations in Brighton, all the ones I know of seem to be oversubscribed and way too busy. Was ideally looking for one with a sauna inside too.

Local Advice needed Calling Brighton's coast lovers 🌊
Do you walk, clean beaches, swim round/surf the West Pier or just love the daily rhythm of the tides? I'm a Hove-based researcher at the University of Plymouth doing a PhD that explores how people connect with, care for, and experience our coastal spaces – and how we can strengthen connections to inspire more care for them.
I’m looking for people who want to talk about their experience of Brighton & Hove’s coast.
It’s voluntary, confidential (your name will not be used in any outputs), and you can opt-out at any time.
DM or email me at [Gareth.james@plymouth.ac.uk](mailto:Gareth.james@plymouth.ac.uk)!
(West Pier before the latest storm, pic by me several years ago, can’t remember exactly when!)

Meet Up Bicycle Friends
I like vintage bikes and alt-cycling, and I think It'd be nice to meet some like-minded people who are also into building bikes, and riding said bikes.
If you are like me and spend far too much time on Ebay, r/xbiking, Disreali Gears and Banana Industries, and you think you probably need to get out on your bike some more, rather than just daydreaming about what parts and frames you're going to get next, then comment below so we can all get together and talk about bikes (and maybe go for a ride).

🤷 Only in Brighton... Is Brighton grieving?
I moved here just before covid 7 years ago, but I'm young so living here away from family has been a large influence on who I am today. But I can't help but feel like the collapse of the west pier is so much more significant to Brighton natives than tourist residents. (Don't mean to be rude saying "tourist resident", I'm stoned and can't think of a simpler way to put it, plus I am one anyway).
I've noticed many people who grew up here will refer to the west pier when telling anecdotes from years ago. Like "...this was ages ago, way before the west pier burnt down".
No idea if I'm making any sense.
If you grew up here, do you do that? If so, are there any other events in the city's past that you use to describe time?
