Question/Discussion Trying to remember a show from the 00's and it's driving me insane.

Google's been no help at all with this, hopefully someone else knows what I'm blabbering about.

I remember as a kid watching a show regularly on TV where each episode was them attempting to restore some ruined object, usually antique and sometimes a vehicle. I have a very clear memory of them turning up to a dock one time, seeing a giant rusted hulk and saying "whoa I hope that's not it, is it?" And there actually being a smaller boat inside the hulk that they were there to restore.

The only other useful info I remember about this is it was contemporary with Scrapheap Challenge, but who knows maybe they just were on reruns at the same time.

Meta Celeb Traitors has gone wrong Spoiler

I was really stoked for this season, but the way it's played out has made it, for me, barely worth looking up from my phone. The problem is who the traitors are. Maya Jama is so bland, it's like being murdered by HR. Yet she's in charge because the other two are not at all Machiavellian, they're literal thinkers with no great social skills. The whole cast has great actors who might have done more with the role, but instead you've got Michael Sheen, one of our finest, sitting around with nothing to do. It throws into focus the deeper problem with the format - the faithful don't have any mechanism to find out information. Hidden role games don't work if there's nothing to deduce with. So the mechanic we always get is just the pile-on. That can be fun to watch but somehow this time round it's all a bit meh.

Question/Discussion Round The Bend Revival?

I have the CiTV series Round The Bend on my mind recently, and i've just thought to myself, is a revival of the show possible? 'cus to be honest it would be interesting to see the character from the show in modern times. Maybe they might even spoof modern day kids shows considering that they did spoof he man and thundercats on the show. Inmagine them making fun of the likes of Spongebob, Bluey or heck even Cocomelon if they fell like taking the mickey out of it!

But that's just my opinion, what are your thoughts?

Question/Discussion Monologue. South Africa. Late 80's.

Anyone remember a one off Patrick Mynhardt TV program from the late 80s / around 1989?

This has been driving me absolutely bloody mad. Chatgpt an I have been hammering it all night. We figured we'd try here. Real people!

I’m trying to identify a one-off British TV program I saw in England, probably around 1987–91, and I have a strong hunch it may have been Channel 4, possibly a Sunday afternoon program.

It was definitely Patrick Mynhardt, he was the only person on screen. It wasn't a series and wasn't a conventional film/drama. It felt like a one-man theatre/arts/drama/ monologue performance, with Mynhardt portraying several different South African characters. It featured Apartheid material.

It was completely serious — not comedy ~ which Mynhardt was (also) doing at that time.

The strongest thing I remember is a scene where he portrayed a South African policeman behind a chain-link fence, firing at Black people on the other side. He seemed to be laughing/enjoying it, and I have a memory of him saying something like “There! You bastards!” (That wording may not be 100%, but ...)

The staging also looked quite basic — I remember a smaller, light/white backdrop with bold black painted strokes, rather than realistic scenery. It may have featured a thatched hut or other South African imagery, changing with the scenes. He may have been seated at the beginning, perhaps as an old man/storyteller.

I know that's a very weird collection of memories, but they're surprisingly vivid.

Does anyone remember the program or its title, please? Even a vague “I remember that!” would be fantastic.

And yes, we’ve already gone down the Patrick Mynhardt / Herman Charles Bosman rabbit hole — but I'm no longer convinced Bosman is necessarily the answer!

Thanks!

Question/Discussion Help identifying Mr Pastry (/Richard Hearne) clip!

Help! This video inserts various actors who were considered for the role of Dr Who into clips from the show. One of the actors used is Richard Hearne, from Pathé's 'Mr Pastry at the Circus'.

But, unless I missed it, his line “It’s too much!” doesn't seem to come from come from the Pathé short - I realise it's a long shot, but does anyone know where this might have come from? Or be aware of any Mr Pastry fans who might know?

Thank you!

Wow

One of the best written and best acted TV shows I have ever seen. I can't believe I had never heard of it before, why don't people mention this in the same breath as The Wire etc?

Absolutely outstanding performances from the whole cast, tight writing, hard hitting, amazing dialogue...

I choked up a few times. It was uncomfortable at times, it had moments of humour, peril, compassion and pretty much every emotion you can think of.

Will watch the 3rd series with my wife after I force her to watch the first 2

Shit like this makes me understand why we have the licence fee

Question/Discussion Help finding weird night time show from 25 years ago

Roughly 25 years ago I remember a show where each episode consisted of multiple "skits". It presented as a documentary but looking back I think it was a parody of a documentary and I was too young to see it.

All I really remember is one skit that had a guy with a piano and the narrator explained that on the end of the piano was a box with secret colourful keys in it. The narrator then explained they would stop the sound now to show us what the secret keys do. The guy pressed the keys and his ears started to bleed.

I was 7ish at the time and I stayed up late in secret, but what "late" actually was then could be anywhere between 8pm and midnight.

Google is fruitless, nobody I have mentioned this to knows what it is and I can't believe that I dreamt up something so wild. If someone knows what the show was you'll resolve a decades long problem for me!

Question/Discussion One that’s been bugging me…. Surrealism

BBC2, or maybe Channel 4. Sometime in the late 80’s or early/mid-90s

I believe it was around Xmas time. I think it was labelled as A surrealist Xmas, or something along those lines.

The only thing I’m certain about is that Janet Street-Porter was standing in front of a road sign that said ‘Scunthorpe’. She is standing in such a way that the word ‘cunt’ takes the gaze. She then looks to camera and says something like “I didn’t put the Thor in Scunthorpe, I was out picking up boys” - and holds up a buoy.

Does anyone know what I’m talking about? I’m starting to think it might have been an fever induced hallucination.

Review All the Kings men 1999

I first saw this when it was on TV in 1999 at the age of 10 crazy to think one of the young lads in it who signed up was only 14 so just given it a rewatch at the age of 37 hits different when you've learnt so much more of the history. My great grandad was in ww1. It made me realise how lukcy i am my whole bloodline even exists to this day. I'd wish they'd make more historical war dramas or TV movies like this one of the 90s Sharpe, Hornblower etc TV and I don't know if it's rose tinted glasses or the nostalgia but the actors of then were so much more iconic than any of those of today. But then it would be hard and unfair to put anyone on par with Sir David Jason, Frost, del boy or Sean Bean, Major Richard Sharpe.

Loved 2point4 Children when I was younger, it was a staple of British TV sitcoms in the 90s. RIP to Georgina, who also achieved stardom as an adult actor as Kimmie in the Jackass Bad Grandpa films.

Question/Discussion I’m slightly obsessed with Prime Suspect 1 & 3.

These stand out to me. These are the ones written by Lynda La Plante. They have a certain ‘grit’ and suspense to them. Really good television.

I like how ‘of its time’ 1 was. How it highlighted the sexist work environment and what Jane was up against. How she had to navigate through that and gradually won the respect and trust of her team. And such clever writing keeping you in doubt right until the end.

What she was up against continues through 2 (racism) and 3 (corruption and homophobia).

3 was very confronting and shone a light on a very dark side of London.
Jane’s tenacity blew things open and she wasn’t scared off.

The others just seem to lack something in comparison. Not the acting. Lots of good actors.

I’m not a fan of the 3 episode format of 4.
I couldn’t take it seriously that it was a different actor playing George Marlow and I’m not a fan of the copycat story.

I like Jane’s relationship with Kernan. I find him quite funny. It’s a shame we didn’t see more of him in the later ones, but I guess that would’ve been unrealistic.

Overall, it was good to see Jane’s journey through the years. I enjoyed the moments when she either outwitting, ignoring or subtly threatening her superiors. 😄

Question/Discussion Help with a film and tv programme.

I remember as a kid, late 70s to early 80s.
A thriller one off programme. Tv thriller etc. He was blind, he had an intruder in his house. The man finds the intruder who has been tormenting him, has killed his dog. The dog is in the swimming pool.

A film, American I’m sure. A teen girl was kidnapped, she was buried alive in a coffin.
