Sub Announcement 2026 Posting & Flair Guidelines - read first, post after!

Important — r/canon is not a photo-sharing sub, it's primarily a gear discussion sub, and as such is not the place for sharing pics and videos captured with your Canon gear.

Exceptions exist for New Gear, Lens of the Week, and Showcase posts, but please see their respective sections below to understand when they can be posted and the requirements for doing so.

Likewise, we're not interested in posts sharing photos of Canon equipment (or worse, the boxes they came in)—your 50/1.2 looks the same as everybody else's—so outside of New Gear posts or those trying to problem solve a specific issue, topics showing gear aren't to be posted.

TLDR;

- No photo-sharing posts
- No photos-of-gear posts
- Use flair appropriately as detailed below

———

Post Flair

Gear Advice
For any post seeking recommendations from others about what camera, lens, or accessory, to buy or rent. Please follow the existing requirements when asking for recommendations. This is not for asking advice on how to use your equipment or solve a problem—for that, you can use...

Tech Help
Technical questions, clarification on how a feature works, error messages...fall under Tech Help.

New Gear
For showing off a new or new-to-you piece of equipment. As always, include a photo of the gear and a photo or three taken with the gear. Also include an explanation of why you got it and how you like using it.

Lens of the Week
We're consolidating down to a single flair any lens of the week post, rather than individual tags for different lenses or focal lengths. As always, look for the current lens of the week topic to know which optic or focal length is current.

Canon News
For product announcements or other Canon-specific or related news. Either provide a link directly to announcements and press releases, or to a recognised source reporting on it. Examples are sites like Petapixel, dpreview, and similarly known sites.

Active Deal
For posts alerting the community to sales from recognised outlets such as the Canon Refurb Store, B&H Photo, Lens Rentals etc. Titles need to begin with the applicable country, the supplier, and then a description of the discount or deal on offer, e.g.

[USA] Canon Refurb Store — R5 reduced to $2199 + free BG-R10 Battery Grip

Any other important details (start/expiry dates) can go into the body of the post. If including a link directly to the deal or supplier site, the URL must be stripped of affiliate and tracking data, or the post will be removed.

If a deal is highlighted from a supplier deemed by the mod team as suspicious, untrustworthy or unsavoury for some other reason, it will be removed.

When a deal is out of stock or expired, the flair needs to be updated to...

Expired Deal
Don't delete the post, just update to the Expired flair, then we can view older deals easily.

Showcase
This will only be made available to select when a post inviting the sub to make Showcase contributions is active.

[New Gear] I was planning to sell my R8 and lenses to switch to Sony. But after getting my hands on the A7V, I ended up buying two R6 Mark II bodies instead... All photos in this post were shot using the RF 85mm 1.4 VCM

I also considered getting the R6 III, but since I don’t shoot much video, I figured the R6 II would be more than enough for my needs. Turns out, I was right!

What’s your favorite old lens ?

I recently bought a Canon R10 and am still using my old EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM with an adapter. I’ve been considering the new Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8, but I’m not convinced it’s worth upgrading, even though it’s around 20 years newer.
Are any of you still using older lenses that you feel can still hold their own against newer glass? Curious to hear your experiences!

Gear Buying Advice Quality between RF 28 2.8 and 24-105 f/4 at same focal length

I’m having trouble finding this exact comparison because Google assumes I mean the 28-70.

I currently have the 24-105 f/4 and am tempted by the idea of finding a used or refurbished version of the 28 pancake just to have something super tiny for walking around.

I know it would overlap focal lengths so more of a size and convenience benefit. But it would be cool to know if the pancake actually has some optical improvements over the zoom at the 28mm focal lengths- anyone know?

Tech Help Old Flash on an R6?

Hello! I bought a canon film camera which came with this Zykkor 606 Auto Bounce flash. I got the flash working again and it’s synced up with the camera.

Can I use the R6 and the Zykkor together or is there a difference in voltage I should be concerned about?

Tech Help Sigma 55-200 DC on full frame Canon 6D

Hello!
I've recently bought a Canon 6D and I wanted to try it as soon as it gets to me. The problem is that I'm coming from a Canon 1300D, with its own kit lenses (18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS II) and a telephoto Sigma 55-200mm f4-5.6 DC.
I read that using EF-S lenses on full frame cameras will damage their mirror because of the protruding ring found in EF-S mount. Since my Sigma is optimized for APS-C cameras but doesn't have the protruding ring, does anyone know if I can still mount it on the 6D and try it really fast?
I'm aware of the vignetting I'll get, it's just to see if everything works. Thanks in advance :)

EDIT: Got it! That's what I thought, thanks to everyone who replied!

Gear Buying Advice Need lens recommendations for my Canon EOS R50. Is upgrading from the kit lens worth it?

Hi!

I recently bought my first mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS R50 and I've been using it with the RF-S 18-45mm kit lens for about three months now.

I'm still pretty new to mirrorless photography and learning how to get the most out of my camera. While I've enjoyed shooting with the R50, I've noticed that some of my photos don't look as sharp or detailed as I'd like.

I understand that the R50 is an entry-level camera, but I've seen people capture some incredible shots with it, so I'm wondering whether the kit lens is holding me back or if I simply need to improve my photography skills and camera settings.

I'm now considering investing in a better lens, but honestly I'm overwhelmed by the options and not sure where to start.

I mostly enjoy casual street photography, outdoor scenes, and capturing moments at events. I prefer a versatile lens that I can carry around for everyday photography.

I'd really appreciate some advice from experienced Canon R-series users!

I'm not looking to spend a fortune, but I'm willing to invest in a good lens that I can continue using as my photography skills improve.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Gear Buying Advice Getting back into it…

Hi all, I have been looking recently at buying a new camera to get back into photography which I used to really enjoy! After many many hours of research I’ve kinda landed on either buying an R8 (new) or R6mk2 (used).

Anyway, long story short… I used to have a 60d which I dropped, bent the lens contacts, tried to repair and then never got it working again! Today I had some time, which led me to once again strip down my 60d and re-assemble, and to my amazement is now fully functional again!!

During the drop my 50mm prime also suffered damage and is now unusable, leaving me with only the 18-55mm kit lens supplied with it back 16 years ago!

My question is what lenses would you guys recommend (any makes) that would pair well with the 60d I currently have and would carry forwards if and when I upgrade into the modern era?

EDIT: my main use will be portraits, street and travel type photography

TIA!

Gear Buying Advice Canon R7 with sigma 70-200 f2.8 sport

Does anybody have any experience with an R7 and a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports. I am looking at this setup as a potential purchase for sports photography but understand it could be slow on the continuous AF.

I’m an amateur with previous experience yrs ago and looking to get back into things with some newer equipment. I’ve read Tamron g2 may be more compatible with R7.

Ultimately I’d likely be adding a 1.4 or 2x teleconverter and the sigma option seems way better and easier to find than a tamron teleconverter. I’d like to hear from someone who has actual experience with this setup if possible.

Gear Buying Advice Telephoto lens dilemma

Hi, i’m taking the first steps in motorsports photography and i want to upgrade from a 55-250mm IS STM to a telephoto lens with more reach because I’m now following a team and making content for them, I also do some planespotting and attend the F1 race in Monza as a spectator, I’m shooting on an APS-C 7D Mark II, I’m stuck at two options a 870€ EF 70-300 L IS USM or a 1090€ Sigma 150-600 Contemporary both used but in mint conditions from RCE Foto.
I know that L series lens are top quality but i’m also tempted for the extra reach of the Sigma, have any of you guys have experience with those lenses and can help me choose what to buy? Thank you in advance

Gear Buying Advice Wonder at times if I should have gone for the Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 instead of canon 50mm and 28mm 2.8 (canon r10)

I started with the 50mm 2.8 when I got my Canon r10.

Then I wanted something wider and I got the 28mm

Can't complain about either. Both compact, especially the 28mm.

However, what I gain in compactness, I lose in the flexibility from a zoom lens.

And the sigma doesn't seem that large either way.

In the past I had a bit of a love for primes.

Throwing on a fixed lens removed options and forces me to work within some limitations.

But when I go out I hate swapping lenses. So I'll end up not wanting to switch and stick with whatever I already have on.

The next thing I was considering was a wider lens like the 10-28 or the 16mm 2.8

Yet the Sigma has been catching my eye.

So why not by the sigma and keep the primes?? Money, I would need to sell my primes to buy it.

So either I enjoy the more compact options, with a little better quality?? Or I go for that flexible option that gives me the full range I'll need 90% of the time.

Any advice?

Is the Canon EOS R50 still worth it in 2026?

Hi everyone! I’m looking to buy my first camera of my own, and the Canon EOS R50 has caught my attention. I’ve been researching different options, but I’d love to hear from people who actually use these cameras!

A little background about me: I’ve always loved photography. When I was younger, I was really interested in it and even started a photography club in high school. A big part of that love came from my grandmothers, who inspired me to appreciate capturing moments and memories. They both loved photography in their own ways, and it’s something that has always stuck with me.

Unfortunately, both of my grandparents have since passed away, and it’s made me appreciate even more how special photographs and videos can be. I’ve become the person who takes pictures at family gatherings and when I’m out with friends because I love having those memories to look back on. Lately, I’ve been wanting to get more serious about photography and a little video once in a while, too.

As for my actual photography experience, I’m pretty much a beginner at this point. I rely heavily on Auto mode and don’t really know how to adjust aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and all those settings yet. I’d love a camera that’s easy to pick up and use now but that I can grow into as I learn.

At a previous job, I had the opportunity to use a Canon EOS R paired with a 24–240mm lens, and I really enjoyed it. I loved being able to zoom in and out and photograph different subjects without constantly switching lenses. That experience is part of why I’m leaning toward Canon.

The things I’d most like to photograph include:

  • 🐈 Animals/wildlife
  • 🏞️ Nature, landscapes, and scenery
  • 🚗 Cars and motorcycles
  • ✈️ Travel and everyday life
  • 🧍 Portraits of friends and family
  • 🎤 Concerts and subjects that are farther away

My budget is around $1,000 total for the camera and lens(es). I’d prefer something relatively recent, but I’m open to buying refurbished or used from a reputable seller with a warranty.

The EOS R50 seems like a great option because of its autofocus, subject tracking, and beginner-friendly features. I’ve also looked at the R100, but I’m unsure whether saving money with the R100 is worth giving up some of the R50’s features.

I’m also trying to figure out what lens setup makes the most sense. Should I get the R50 with the standard 18–45mm kit lens and upgrade later? Look for an 18–150mm lens? Or get a two-lens kit with a telephoto lens for animals, cars, and concerts? I’d love to have a versatile setup without going over budget.

For those who own or have used the R50:

  1. Is it still worth buying in 2026, or are there better options now?
  2. Is it a good camera for someone who mostly uses Auto mode?
  3. What lens or lens combination would you recommend for my interests and budget?
  4. Would you choose the R50 over the R100 for a beginner?
  5. Is there anything else in the Canon lineup I should consider?

Photography has always meant a lot to me, and I’d really love to reconnect with that interest and develop my skills. More than anything, I want to capture moments I can look back on years from now and keep those memories alive.

I know I have a lot to learn, so I’d appreciate any advice or recommendations. Thank you! ❤️

Tech Help Bent Pin on EOS 7D

Thumbnail

Hey community,

Need some opinions or experiences with bent pins on EOS 7D.
By the Layout seems to be Pin 1, one of the ground pins.
Is it bad for using when there‘s only one of the ground pins or do the cards really need both of them? Not like USB-C where it depends on the direction how it’s plugged in.

Thanks in advance.

canon sure shot - 3d print battery door replacement?

Hi there!

Just bought a canon sure shot (I believe the original model) for a birthday present.

However the battery door seems to be quite delicate. I can definitely see it breaking. Would need to tape as it does have little metal conductors for the batteries etc

Anyone know where I can find the specific latch for this? A 3d print model file would be great or happy to buy one. Would love to avoid needing to buy another camera just for parts

Thanks much!

Looking for an upgrade from my EOS 450d

Hi,

I'm looking for advice to upgrade from my old camera to one that is better suited for my needs.

The main use I will give the camera is bird/wildlife photography.

I've doing it for 4 years now as a weekend hobby. I'm by no means an expert and I'm sure I could improve even with my current setup but lately I'm feeling limited with it.

Currently I'm using an EOS 450D + EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lenses

What i feel I need is:

  • More megapixels
  • Higher ISO
  • A camera with video capabilities

I'm looking for another EOS as I would like to use the same lens.

I don't need anything fancy or super new, I'm looking into the secondhand market as my budget is 400€(450$) max.

What older camera do you think will suit my needs?

Thank you!!

Gear Buying Advice Advice on my next lens for the EOS R8

Hey everyone, I am looking to add another lens to my setup and would love some recommendations.

Right now I am shooting on a Canon R8. My current lenses are the RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 kit lens and the RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro. I really enjoy this combo for everyday shooting, but I am ready to expand my kit and get something with more reach like a telephoto.

Just a heads up that I want to stick strictly to native Canon RF lenses.

Right now I am looking to spend around $1,500, but I am curious to see if I should extend my budget. Could you guys share your best recommendations broken down by price? I would love to see what you suggest for under $1k, $1.5k, $2k, and $2.5k.

What lens really changed the game for you after your starter setup, and do you think saving up for the higher price tiers is actually worth the jump? Any advice is appreciated!

Help on lens sharpness

Hi all

I recently shot a few photos of our family in the park and although I'm quite happy with the session, looking at the photos in detail I was a bit disappointed with the sharpness. This was shot on R8 and a rather old EF24-70 f/2.8 Mark 1, which also had a failed ribbon cable that was repaired in a non-official shop. I got even more disappointed when a few days later I went to the same park, trying to shoot some birds and animals with an old EF70-300, and got seemingly much sharper photos.

I've set up the camera on a tripod at home and shot a box with some text on it at a few different settings with a few different lenses. Can you please take a look at the photos and tell me if I'm imagining things, or this is more or less in line with what I can expect from the old EF24-70 lens.

I did comparisons with a RF24-105 f/4L lens, both at f/4 and f/5.6, same exposure/ISO. To my eyes the old 24-70 is very soft at f/2.8 and still quite soft at f/4, and kinda gets to the same point as the RF at f/5.6. I did turn off the IS on the RF lens.

Here's a link with 4 photos for comparison
https://we.tl/t-15RD6J3n1QsosK5t

I kinda wanna know if this looks like an ok lens, or something was misaligned when the cable was repaired. I do have photos from a long time ago with this lens, on much older DSLRs, before the ribbon cable repair, that I kinda like much better, they just seem to have much more detail and pop nicer.

Gear Buying Advice Canon R5C From Canon R

So I currently use a Canon EOS R. I am very happy with it, and it has done absolute wonders for me, (I do railroad photography). At this time, I feel the need to upgrade to something higher, case being a R5C. Has anybody made this leap and can offer insight to how the R5C would be as a hybrid and how it handles with just images alone?

For anyone wondering my lens setup, I utilize a RF 70-200mm F.4 L, RF 16mm F2.8 STM, and a RF 24-105mm F.4 L. Thanks for reading!

Just retired, on list for R6MkIII, but the glass….

My last body was the 7D. So, 17 or 19 yrs old? Prior to that I had the 40D, both have the battery packs for extended shooting. While I still have both, the 40D is not going to get much cash. The 7D I may give to my son. My question is what glass is to stay. Current lenses:

11-22 EF-S
24-70 F2.8L
70-200 F4L
Sigma 70-200 F2.8…just shy of L quality
L serie 1.4x
L series 2x

I am going to pick up the R6 Mk III
15-35MM F2.8L
The shop also has a used 100-400MM F5.6-8 L series zoom, c 2018 which I have on hold for when the body comes in.

I am thinking the Sigma is the best to sell as the 70-200F4 is a really lovely light lens, and the 100-400 can easily take over from the Sigma plus 2x converter. I am thinking the R6 ISO reach will make a 100-400 plus 2x converter a viable option under some conditions, since we do have F11 lenses in longer focal lengths anyways…

My idea is give my son the 7D, the 11-22MM EF-s and get him a normal EF-S zoom as a gift. Still an awesome camera, and with the first grandkid coming, a reasonable economic decision?

Thoughts/input welcome.

Tech Help Compatibility Samyang 8mm CS with 5D Mark IV

Hello everyone! I have a Samyang 8mm CS, that I used to use with my trustworthy 40D and since I got my 5D Mark IV is sleeping in a drawer. I love this lens and would like to use it with my 5D, despite being aware that the images will be quite different. I’m just afraid to use it as I don’t know of it will damage the camera (mirror impact). Has someone tested this or is aware if this ‘combo’ works? Thanks for your advice!
