PSA Dot distribution of murders in 2024 (in response to the "no-go areas" map)

Post image
831 Upvotes

I pulled this together after seeing the no-go zones map posted yesterday, to see if there was maybe a more data-driven approach to it.

The map shows a single dot for each murder reported in 2024, though not at the actual location of the murder but randomly distributed in the police precinct.

PSA Be careful at Cavendish!

Post image
591 Upvotes

This was super sketchy! Took my old Opal Astra for a full valet on a Saturday at the Kwik Fit car wash inside Cavenish. Service was good and car came back clean, but for a R1200 valet the car should have honestly been cleaner. There was still dirt in corners and the wiping of surfaces seemed a little rushed. However, that's not the worst part. When leaving the parking lot, I heard a ringing sound coming from somewhere in the back of the car. I thought maybe a staff member dropped a phone under the seats by mistake. I stopped to find the noise and after a few minutes found an apple tracking air-tag tucked into the door storage section of the passenger back seat. Not exactly something that gets dropped accidentally and in that location. This is worrying as my car is often a target for theft. I went back and showed the service staff, the guy seemed a little nervous/sheepish. Not much response though. Is was also stupid and should have kept the tag. Please be careful when taking your car there!

I know the official site is finessa.co.za, my number is not associated with my car, and the typical scare "pay within 24 hours". What I don't understand, it comes from "Traffic", a number I can't see or save, nor message? How is that possible?

PSA Water Level Warning

This is just a general heads up that we appear to possibly be entering the El Niño weather pattern which means hotter summers and less rainy winters. While this may seem like a bonus (more beach days and less winter depression) it has a major impact on our dam levels.

Just in case you weren’t here last time (2014-2021) the southern hemisphere experienced a particularly powerful El Niño between 2015-2018 which resulted in lower rainfall and thus very empty dams.

As it currently sits (January 12th) the dams are 66.8% full (compared to 86.5% last year) diminishing at roughly 0.5% week on week with rainfall only starting in late April.

Back of the napkin math puts our dam levels at 55% by the time the rains start. This level isn’t inherently problematic and puts us in the “early drought caution” range.

That being said, without significant rainfall in the rainy season we can expect the year on year levels to dramatically drop which could eventually lead to another “day zero water crisis”. This time with an even larger population.

So unless the new Paarden Eiland desalination plant goes ahead real quick and comes online even quicker it’s time to start thinking about your water habits again, you know the ones I’m talking about, no you don’t have to shower in a bucket or only use 50L a day, just don’t waste water.

Some links in case you wanna double check the math

Also maybe a water crisis will drop property prices… so maybe don’t listen to me…

PSA Trafficking syndicate in Bellville!!!

Post image
324 Upvotes

Hi I applied for these 3 jobs in the span of 3 months or so. My intuition told me to research the company in the first email (I forgot the name of it and don’t have the proof anymore cause I cleared my emails). When I Googled this company the company website was absolute junk and looked like a toddler made it in 5 minutes. The Facebook page was even worse with images of BM having liquor in their hands. Not very professional. The address of the business was directed to The Bellville mall in Voortrekker road. I mentioned this to my mother and she said that there are trafficking syndicates in that area. I don’t know why no one is doing anything about this??

I got my second email with the same address and same email layout just a different company name and different person name. Weird asf ikr!

Today I got my third email with the same address but different name. Claiming to want an interview with me and saying that the “CEO” of the company wants the interview with me. That never happens in the real world.

Here is the third email as proof. Only difference from other emails was the name of the “company” and the person who “sent” the email. This third email was so poorly done with so much spelling mistakes.

PSA Stop making Zen Stone stacks on our mountains!!!!

I'm noticing Zen stone stacks on Table Mountain again, and if I may, I'd like to explain why this is problematic. Firstly, they pose a fire hazard. Our rocks can generate friction when they tumble, potentially sparking fires. Wildlife, like caracals, might mistake them for stable surfaces and lean on them. If a stone falls on an animal's foot, it could lead to starvation, as the animal might be unable to hunt. The mountain's ecosystem relies on a fragile balance; rocks protect young fynbos seeds from drying out, support insect habitats, and provide safe breeding spaces for endangered frogs. They also help stabilize the soil, preventing erosion on Table Mountain—a formation that’s among the oldest in the world and naturally eroding over time. Additionally, placing these stacks on ledges endangers climbers below. Unlike mountain cairns, which are stable and serve as navigational aids, Zen stacks can mislead hikers and put lives at risk. For the sake of our mountain’s ecosystem and everyone’s safety, please, stop building these stacks.

PSA Is Revo Property breaking the law here? I think so. I'll explain why.

I noticed Revo Property adds these to their property descriptions on Property24. If challenged at the PPRA or RHT, I don't think this holds up for the landlord and both Revo and the Landlord can face a penalty here.

This is a management fee, not a "lease drafting fee". They are trying to avoid the law by rewording the name and forcing the tenant to pay for something that is the Landlord's duty to pay.

It's tax deductible for the landlord

The main reason this fee is paid by the landlord is because SARS allows this fee to be deducted as a tax write off. If the tenant pays this fee, and the landlord then claims this as an "expense" (of which they clearly did not pay) then that means the landlord is committing tax fraud aided by Revo.

Source: https://www.sars.gov.za/types-of-tax/personal-income-tax/tax-on-rental-income/

It's a violation according to the PPRA, of which Revo Property holds a license

In short summary:
All agencies must have a signed mandate between the Agency and the Landlord and the fee for this agreement is strictly between the Landlord and the Agency. The Tenant is not a party of this agreement and not liable to pay this fee.

Source: https://theppra.org.za/download/property-practitioners-act-no-22-of-2019/

What to do?
In the short term, do not rent from Revo. Do not respond to their ads.
Report them to the RHT. Especially if you have already signed a rental agreement with them.

PSA Struggling to make real friends in Cape Town? Let's meet up.

My one year anniversary of being in this city will be in a few months and I categorically refuse to let that date go by without making at least one good friend. This city is so horribly cliquey and even if it wasn't, Gen Z and millennials are so overworked, overstressed and socially atomised that we're basically living like bees in a nest. Everyone wants real connection but we're all too fucking scared to go out and look for it.

I refuse to go into another book shop and try to strike up a conversation only to either get looked at like I'm insane or given a phone number and then left on read. We need to put effort in to rebuild the social connections that society fucked up.

Listen, I'm an introvert too. Forcing myself out into public places and hobby shops to try to find some social interaction is like pulling teeth. I GET IT. But I don't care if you're anxious about irritating me or making a fool of yourself. I want you to irritate me. You irritating me is a privilege that I would vastly prefer over simply never speaking to anyone.

I don't care if the only people who respond to this are some drunk fratboys who get into a fist fight with me, as long as we can laugh about it in the hospital. Anything, anything at all is better than this weird dystopian bullshit.

I'm in Durbanville and I want to meet people. My proposed time and place is Bootleggers cafe this Saturday the 6th at 1PM. If it's far, that's fine. I will straight up pay for a few people's Ubers. If you're anxious about meeting people in public, then a bunch of you can chill at my place and we can chat there.

For the love of fuck, guys, please don't make me resort to going to a fucking hiking group or a goddamn board games meetup.

Edit: Alright. The interest in this post has been both sudden and immense (I'm simultaneously disappointed and glad I'm not the only one struggling to meet people so much) but the good news is we now formally have a Whatsapp group. Open to anyone that wants to meet some new buddies! I can't post here without making the spam bot angry, but please let me know if you want an invite.

(Big thanks to the mods for reinstating the post and giving permission to repost the link to the Whatsapp group! https://chat.whatsapp.com/GSZ3tIn6DXw10TmCgrHGMs?mode=gi_t)

PSA I hope VFS enjoys taking all of our money

Just a small message to say that if anyone is going to VFS for a visa application any time soon, they will try any way they can to take your money. To avoid this:

  • You’ll automatically get an email when your passport is ready for collection, so you don’t need to pay the extra R40 for SMS notifications (unless you want the R40 SMS). They will automatically add the R40 SMS to your reciept and it is your duty to tell them that you do not want this added.
  • Don’t take a backpack or laptop or anything other than your documents, they’ll make you store it and charge around R50 for a locker.
  • Make sure you complete the correct Schengen application form for the country you’re visiting (e.g. the Portugal and Denmark look identical but apparently are not)
  • If you do need printing (for example for the correct Schengen form), they charge about R60 for “photocopy” services, also very kindly added automatically added to my receipt.

On the bright side, my Schengen visa for Portugal was processed in 48 hours, so they are pretty efficient.

PSA Uber and e delivery services in Cape Town becoming unreliable and dangerous

Just a warning based on my own experience.

I no longer feel comfortable using Uber or some delivery services in Cape Town, especially at night. I've had too many situations where drivers were difficult to reach, locations on the app didn't seem accurate, deliveries were delayed for long periods, and communication was poor.

I've also experienced drivers becoming rude or argumentative when simple instructions were given. Recently, a delivery driver repeatedly rang bells and caused a disturbance despite clear delivery instructions, and then became confrontational when asked about it.

Not every driver is like this, but the overall experience has become frustrating and, at times, unsafe.

My advice, especially for women and tourists, is to be cautious when using these services at night. If possible, use transport arranged directly through your hotel, accommodation, or a trusted company.

I've decided to stop using Uber for now. Until GPS tracking, driver accountability, and customer safety improve, I'd rather use alternative transport options.

Stay safe and trust your instincts.

PSA PSA: Warning when driving from Cape Town International Airport

I just want to warn everyone who uses the airport route, especially at night.

Saturday night (22 November) around 19:30, we were almost hijacked on the way home from the airport. As we were getting onto the N2 towards Somerset West, a guy walked onto the slipway, straight in front of our car, and pointed a gun at us. He clearly wanted us to stop. We ducked and drove by, but it was honestly terrifying. We’re still shaky from it.

This happened right here:

https://maps.app.goo.gl/qGtbpurDsfrDHcvC8

If you’re using this route, especially coming from or going to the airport, be extra alert. The fact that someone can just walk onto a major on-ramp and point a gun at cars is insane. We use this road often, and now I’m honestly scared for my loved ones too.

Also, 112 was completely useless when I tried to report it. They bounced me around between operators who didn’t care. Only 10111 actually answered and said they will send a car to the location.

I don’t want anyone else to go through this. If you’ve seen similar things in this area, please share — maybe we can push for proper security or cameras on these ramps. The airport approach shouldn’t be this unsafe.

I have sent emails to a few governmental organisations and ward councillors to see if they can assist tightening up the security in the area.

PSA Attempted Robbery of Cyclist Strand Street under N2

If you're a solo cyclist - avoid strand street under the N2. Someone ran into the street and tried to knock me off my bike and rob me this morning around 6:20. Luckily I was able to swerve past him. There was a second person hiding who came out when he tried to knock me off.

PSA Nearly robbed in Strand Street

I just want to warn everyone to be careful in Strand Street... more specifically the end part towards town, near the castle.

Today at around 4pm I was driving on my way home from work and stopped at a robot. Like an idiot, I hadnt locked my doors (please don't judge- it wont happen again). Suddenly a young colored guy walked towards me and he just seemed like a regular beggar asking for money. He walked closer to my door and as I put my hand out to lock the door, he pulled it open and we struggled. He opened the door and the only thing I heard him say was give me your chain (I had a cheap chain around my neck). Of course I was terrified and kept screaming, it all happened so fast.

I was expecting him to demand my cellphone and laptop which were in the car but for some reason he didnt! He suddenly just ran off after struggling and for about 10 seconds and took nothing.

As i drove off I spoke to others on the road who told me the same thing happened to them at same time, so I think it was a group of guys who went to different cars. Another man told me that these men are a 'gang' who 'always do this' in the area.

I definitely will be avoiding Strand Street and will ALWAYS lock my doors from now on. Be careful 🫶

PSA I got sexually harassed (as a man) in Stellenbosch. Please be vigilant!

I was in Jan Marais nature reserve this morning, sitting on a bench when a man came and sat on a rock beside the bench. After a couple of minutes he asked me if I was a student and I turned to look at him. Thats when i saw he had cut a circular hole in his pants around his crotch, and EVERYTHING was visible. He was staring at me with a very malicious intent with his erect penis very extremely visible. I got up and quickly walked to the gate of the reserve, where I called SAPS.

The cops eventually arrived and we spent 20 minutes looking for him but it appears he had slipped past the one gate that was meant to be kept closed on the other side of the park. To put it into perspective, this man was not homeless, he had very clean clothing and did not look like a vagrant.

Security told us that this man has been reported before but they had never found him. I really do not want to imagine what his intentions in that park were. Lots of people run in the park and I have a bad feeling he could have done something to someone. I wish i kept my eye on him because he really could hurt someone else now.

Please be vigilant for this man in Stellenbosch, and please be safe, man or woman, no one in this country is truly safe.

Tl;dr there is a serial sexual harasser in Stellenbosch, please be vigilant and cautious.

Edit: I realise I should’ve provided a description of the man. He was about 172cm, an African man with short black hair. He looked to be in his early 30’s. He had a “kind” face and his general demeanor initially was kind, definitely not off-putting. He spoke quite well and his accent wasn’t that thick, his voice was just a bit high, not deep at all. He was wearing a black sweater and grey sweatpants that were cut around the crotch. He didn’t have facial hair. His build was stocky but not overweight. He had a black samsung phone. Thats really as much as I can remember from the interaction.

PSA Hazard light

Just a PSA for those that need to read this, your hazard lights are supposed to be used to indicate danger infront of you that is causing you to reach a stand still. It is not supposed to be used as a "watch this space, I'm about to be a reckless poes and turn left or right at a moments notice" light. If you're going to break the rules of the road by pulling over to the left on a red line, or doing an illegal u-turn to the right, use the corresponding turn signal so I atleast know which side of the road you're going to be a reckless poes on
