I recently neutered my cat (male, 10 months old, vaccinated) on 17th of October and he didnāt immediately recover from the anaesthesia so the doctor gave him a respirator booster, anti vomiting and few other medications. The pre surgery blood tests were normal.
From 18th onwards he was fine although he had become a bit dull, we assumed he was recovering from the surgical stress.
From the evening of 22nd Oct, he started occasionally refusing food. He was still walking around but mostly sleeping.
On 24th we decided to take him to the vet since he started refusing even his favourite food. The vet recommended some medications like Feline Revive+, diarest cool and another probiotic. When we fed him these he started vomiting bile. So same day, in the evening we took him to the vet again and they gave him some more medications (IV drips, anti vomiting etc). After bringing him home we suddenly saw a rapid drop in his activity. He was mostly sitting like a loaf, not moving around much, not even sleeping and looked very confused. He vomited twice that evening when we tried feeding him.
At around 3:30am on 25th oct, we decided to take him to the hospital because he was very weak. Upon arrival, the doctor did a snap test for parvo (Feline Panleukopenia Virus) and it came out negative. He was severely dehydrated so they couldnāt collect his blood sample and put him on fluid therapy.
Later that morning they did a CBC and found his WBC and platelets extremely low
WBC 0.38,
PLT 29,
PCT 0.06,
TOTAL BILIRUBIN 1.08
Direct bilirubin 0.5
They recommended a few more virus pcr tests in the evening and the blood sample was sent to the lab for examination. They found his intestine enlarged and there was blood in his stool. He was still receiving fluid therapy.
Today (26th October) his condition has deteriorated further
WBC 0.26,
PLT 6,
PCT 0.01
There is also inflammation of the stomach. The vet recommended pancreatic tests and those came out normal. Later in the evening the pcr tests from 25th came in and he tested positive for FPV (CT value 22.27). He has vomited today and there was blood in his vomit. He is continuing his fluid therapy.
We believe he had contracted FPV recently but the surgery gave the virus a chance to attack his system. Before the surgery he was a normal, playful kitten. Is this the right assumption?
We are currently just praying for a miracle.
Based on your experience, is there a chance of survival for him or should we prepare ourselves mentally for the inevitable? Should we euthanise him because he is suffering a lot or is there a chance for the virus to break down and his body to fight it back?
