META Just a reminder of our rules

Tēnā koutou,

Just a reminder of our rules, specifically our rule against solicitors.

This means no solicitation, no buying and selling. We allow limited promotion of events if there are deals like XXX free tickets up for grabs, but no reselling is permitted. If you have tickets to an event, please resell via official channels or bribe the mods.

Additionally, please note the following:

Quit asking for sex. That said, no trades involving goats, sheep, turnips, or other 'alternate' currencies.

No posts asking for drugs, where to source drugs or cleverly wording your request to avoid the filters. Your "medicinal herb" enquiries aren't as subtle as you think.
Just ask the mods.

No sneaky sponsorship plugs, no affiliate links unless we get our cut.

No reselling of free event tickets, it’s free for a reason.

No hiring hitmen or bounty hunters, legal gray areas make us uncomfortable.

Last but not least, Don't be a dick, don't act like a dick.

Also please check out r/chchmeet

Don't bring your pungent weed on busses please for the love of god.

• Upvotes

I don't care what you do in your spare time just don't make it my problem, if you're bringing your stinky ass weed on public transport, keep it in an airtight container. I just got off a bus where the smell was so strong it filled the whole bus and was so bad I actually threw up as I was getting off it. I've smoked it enough to green out before and it didn't smell that strong even then. I'm not talking about a hint of it on your clothing, that I don't mind, just don't want to still smell it half an hour later. Thank you.

Christchurch dating pool grim?

• Upvotes

Is it just me or do any other humans feel like the dating pool in Chch is pretty grim right now? Like why is it so hard to connect with someone in their mid-late thirties that isn’t a bogan, pleb or broke?

Employers to avoid? (in hospitality industry)

Hello guys! I have been changing jobs a few times after leaving the job that I worked for so long because I needed a change. However, I haven’t had much luck with employers and so it would be nice to know which one to avoid to save my time and mental. (For your own legal safety, please avoid mentioning the full names, just a hint of the area or first letter would be ok).
Please feel free to also share any good workplaces! Lets focus on positivity too. Thank you in advance.

Politics My experience voting in chch today

Advance voting is open now. I noticed one of the shops near my local Bunnings was set up as a polling station, so figured why not exercise my democratic rights before grabbing some timber for my fence? It's pretty convenient that I didn't even need to look for somewhere to vote.

It was quick and easy, took about 15 minutes in total including some time waiting in a queue. Showed the worker my easy vote email and it was a straightforward process from there. No worrying about IDs or other stuff. Ticked two circles and dropped a form in a box. Done.

A couple things: I'm glad we have elections that are relatively easy and safe to participate in. They could always be better, of course, and recent changes to late enrollment are problematic.

Also, I was in the queue with and briefly spoke to a group of 4 young people casting what was for most of them their first votes in an election - it was nice to see the next generation getting involved and being excited about democracy, especially when there's a pervasive narrative about youth disengagement that usually just blames them for being apathetic.

I'm not sure what way this election is going to go. It's tightly contested and there are several variables that could swing things one way or another. But make the most of your chance to be part of the decision that will shape our country for the next 3 years.

Rebel Sport Christchurch stores - Don’t answer phone policy.

• Upvotes

Have tried over the last few days to contact any of the stores but there is never an answer. Is there an official policy where they don’t answer to force you into the store to purchase or seek an answer?

Recommendations for 3rd birthday locations/venues

• Upvotes

Heya, it’s getting close to my child’s 3rd birthday. We are wanting to do a small party for them. Not keen on having it at home or places like chipmunks. Can anyone recommend somewhere nice to have it? I like the idea of spencerpark or a local playground but I’d hate to be stressing if it comes to the day and all spots are full! Thanks!

Motu move issues?

I'm just checking to see if anyone else has experienced this. We have 2 family members using the bus everyday and we got them westpac debit cards (with contactless payments), registered them under motu move etc. We activated the first set of cards, put a pin on them etc, so should have been working. They went to use them with the bus and it didn't work, it said card error (there was more than enough money in the account, no decline of card just error). Then we tried to use it at Woolies with the paywave, and it wouldn't accept contactless and just said error. So I thought ok there is maybe an issue with these cards. Ordered new westpac debit cards. Took them to pak n save, set the pin, then bought something contactless with them both to confirm contactless was indeed working. We then tried to get on the bus again with the new cards and now it didn't work and said card error again. We have double checked and contactless just worked at a cafe, just still not on the bus

I can't understand why this wouldn't work at all. There is definitely money in the account. Contactless is definitely enabled (and worked at pak n save the day before). Has anyone had a similar experience or have any idea what could be going on?

Eyebrow wax & tint recommendations in Christchurch?

Hey everyone!
I’m looking for recommendations for somewhere in Christchurch that does a really good eyebrow wax and tint!
I used to go to Simply Beauty, but unfortunately they took a bit too much off my brows last time, so I’m a little nervous about going back 😅

I’m really wanting someone who takes their time, listens to what you’re after and doesn’t go overboard with the waxing. I prefer keeping my brows looking quite natural and full, just nicely shaped and tidied up!

Would love to hear where everyone goes and who they’d recommend, especially if you have a particular brow technician you swear by!

Thanks!

Question for those who own a white aluminium pergola/louvre

Does the white stand the test of time? Is it easy to clean? Does it start looking tired over the years? Tossing up between white and black, I think the black will become too hot to touch and retain heat more than the white will, mum is concerned white will look terrible in a few years.

Ta!

What businesses/stores/restaurants would you'll like to return to the CBD?

Post quake tons of businesses left the CBD and many of those that are still surviving are yet to return.

I generally think there is a lack of retail space in the CBD through the rebuild.

Restaurants and cafes now have a lot of competition downtown, but one can only hope they return.

Just like I hope some other businesses are resurrected from the dead/complete closure.

Which ones would you like to see back in the CBD?

Queer Birdwatching Vol. 3: Travis Wetlands 31/10 @ 10am

Let’s go birdwatching again.

When: Saturday 31/10 @ 10am

Where: Travis Wetlands, Entrance off Travis Rd

The Travis wetlands are well known for it’s large variety of freshwater wetland birds, even the White Heron, Australian Bittern and Black Stilt have been found here. It is also home to a large number of Pukekos.

Everyone is welcome to join us, just keep in mind this is a queer event, so don’t be a dick.

Last time we got lucky and found the Karearea within the first ten minutes and we even heard a Shining Cuckoo.

Advice about the New Zealand Graduate School of Education!

I am currently in the process of applying to complete a postgrad diploma in secondary teaching at the NZGSE and wondering if anyone has any recent experience training with them and could give me the rundown and any advice. I would be training to teach mainly science/biology with potentially health and psychology as extra subjects. What is the actual program like, especially for someone who lives outside the city and would be travelling 45 minutes in each way? Any tips for interviews and then if I get in for thriving during training? and most importantly do you recommend it and were you prepared well for teaching? Thank you!

Mini Ute

Hi everyone. I was driving back from hanmer today (who wasn’t?) and I passed an adorable mini ute (loads of minis on the road maybe a meet up?)

If anyone has a picture of this rare vintage sight I would love to be able to show my husband who missed it and doesn’t quite believe it was a mini ute.

TIA

Serious assault outside one Nz stadium this evening

About 5 minutes before full time in the Kiwis v Cook Islands game this evening, there was a brawl on Tuam St by the Madras crossing. Looked bad - anyone know what happened?
