Growing up, every Lunar New Year's Eve, the adults would hang up a traditional scroll of the God of Wealth to pray for good fortune in the coming year. ​Because of the special and solemn atmosphere, as soon as this scroll went up, us kids wouldn't dare speak too loudly—we were terrified of disturbing the deity! From that moment on, everyone tiptoed around and started the new year on a very careful, respectful note. ​Does anyone else have similar childhood memories of this?

This is 雀嬉圖, Sparrows at Play, a bamboo screen by Wang Bocheng (王博成), a carver I work with. The detail I'd like to share is the little column of writing beside the birds.

It contains two clues: 辛丑立夏 and 仿宋人意.

The first dates the piece to Lixia, the “Beginning of Summer,” in the xinchou year—2021 in this case. Lixia is one of the 24 solar terms in the traditional Chinese calendar. So the inscription places the work within a season as well as a year.

The second means roughly “in the spirit of the Song masters.” The Song dynasty (960–1279) had a remarkable tradition of bird-and-flower painting, 花鳥畫 (huāniǎohuà). A few small birds and branches could reward very close looking: the tilt of a head, the way a bird grips a twig, the space around it. For a historical comparison, the Met has a 12th-century painting of sparrows, plum blossoms and bamboo (https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/40063). I don't know which particular paintings Wang had in mind; this is a comparison, not an identified source for his design.

Here, that attention to small things has moved into bamboo. Look at the open beaks around the nest, then the bird flying in above it. To me, it feels like arriving in the middle of a very busy household.

There is another connection to Chinese art: bamboo objects could carry pictures and calligraphy into the scholar's everyday surroundings. The V&A has a bamboo wrist rest carved with pine trees (https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O23585/), used while writing. Its inscription credits both the painter and the carver. This screen belongs to a different moment, but its image, dated writing and carved seal marks make that relationship easy to see.

Is there a craft in your culture that brings together an image, writing and the maker's mark in a similar way? I'd love to see examples.

I posted here a little while ago about a small game I've been making in my spare time, where you try to guess the origin and age of Chinese artifacts just by looking at them.

Just wanted to share a little update: Artifact Tracer is coming to Steam on November 4.

I've spent a lot of my evenings and weekends working on this, and it's honestly a little surreal that it's almost finished. I know it's a pretty niche game, but I've really enjoyed making it, and I hope other people who love history and old artifacts will have some fun with it too.

I've been searching everywhere for the English-only PDF of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (6th Edition, Pearson). I finally found a forum where a user shared a perfectly working OCR version (250MB with bookmarks), but it's hosted on Baidu Netdisk.

Since I'm in Mexico, Baidu doesn't let me download it or even create an account without a Chinese phone number.
