藏族 | Tibetans Help Find missing mum in Tibet after floods

My mum Evita Sarma (Latvian citizen) has been missing from Gyron port (Tibet side), since the floods on the 26th of August.

At this point i am running out of options, so I'm reaching out to you dear Reddit users.

Based on the last photo that my mum sent me, she just cleared the Border about 3 min before floods hit. I have contacted the Latvian ministry of foreign affairs, Chinese embassy in Latvia and support phone line that was set up for international queries.

I do understand that chances are astronomically low, but until I'll get concrete information I will be still keeping hope and praying for the miracle.

My biggest problem is that last information about what's going on (in terms of rescue work) was on the 7th of September.

If you know anything current like hospitals rescued people have been transported to, agencies to contact, statistics or anything else, I would be endlessly thankful.

I really need your help. My mum is the dearest person to my ever and only family i have. We always been close and I miss her so, so much.

新闻 | News Trump said China was headed for ‘big trouble.’ Instead, its economy is growing faster than the U.S., and its deficits are pulling in the right direction

When President Trump announced his tariff plan 18 months ago, he made it clear who he hoped would pay for the sharp end of the scheme: It wouldn’t be U.S. consumers; it would be foreign exporters who would “eat” the increased costs.

Indeed, following the tit-for-tat trade war between the U.S. and fellow economic superpower, China, President Trump warned the rival force was headed for “big trouble” if it didn’t engage in a “two-way street” of trade.

Yet while 100% of U.S. exports to China are reportedly subject to tariffs—and a respective 88.8% of Chinese exports are subject to U.S. tariffs—the world’s second-largest economy has continued to grow ahead of expectations, and has seemingly grown its export business with the rest of the world.

Goldman Sachs’s Hui Shan noted over the weekend that China’s Q3 real GDP grew 4.5% year-on-year, slightly above the consensus expectation of 4.4%. Shan added that September activity data were firmer than expected, with industrial production growth accelerating to 5.5% on a year-on-year basis, and retail sales above expectations.

中国生活 | Life in China Why does no one wash their hands..

I’ve been living in Shanghai for 2 years now… Everytime I go to the restroom I think 95% the people in the women’s restroom don’t even wash their hands, they just walk straight out. Even today at the 1000 trees mall… I saw a CHEF with a white hat just WALK OUT without even washing their hands.
I’m just so shocked and confused… even if you squat to use the toilet, you still have to wipe and press the flush button…

新闻 | News World’s first: China to build 74,000-ton floating research 'island'

China plans to build a 74,000-ton self-propelled research platform that combines the mobility of a ship with the laboratories and long-term accommodation of a floating island. The $413 million vessel will house 238 people, carry six laboratories, and is designed to operate in 20–30-foot waves while withstanding winds above 165 mph. Could mobile platforms like this transform deep-sea research by letting scientists remain in extreme ocean environments for much longer?

Could someone help me find or share this book? I’ve tried looking in several places, but I haven’t been able to find a complete copy (pdf) anywhere. It can be in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. If you have any other book recommendations regarding agricultural development and land reform in China, I would welcome those as well!

Travel Can you travel through Xinjiang without a car?

• Upvotes

I was looking at places to visit in Xinjiang and most of my findings are their incredible nature and wilderness. A lot of the places seem pretty spread out, with some which seem to be in the middle of nowhere.

Is it ideal for a foreigner to explore Xinjiang's nature with a car? (I would need to get a Temp Driving Permit)

中国生活 | Life in China Girl's hand injured in illegal factory

Archived [here](https://web.archive.org/web/20261026135019/https://www.sohu.com/a/1090613882_253235).

I always know labor protection is bad in China but honestly I don't expect it to be *that* bad even now. Anyway...

It appears a 12 year old girl had her arm injured in an accident while working at an illegal clay workshop. She reportedly hated school so her stepmom introduced her to the factory. And then the accident happened.

The amount the factory was ordered to pay is low but that doesn't surprise me because that's basically what you expect for adult employees. But I'm curious why the factory isn't shut down.

咨询 | Seeking Advice (Serious) How to make myself look like a western Chinese?

As a Chinese person who grew up in the west with zero Mandarin skills, how can I make myself look more like I'm not from here.

Last time by far the biggest problem I had was people thinking I was Mandarin speaking and it took some people a long time to grasp that I didn't speak it lol

Any way to look more American?

问题 | General Question (Serious) trying to becoming an english teacher

I am looking at becoming an english teacher in China. I will get my bachelors degree (Not in teaching its in East Asian Studies) in June of 2027 and plan to get my CELTA during the summer. I was looking at jobs and saw that many want/prefer 1-2 years of experience. How hard is it to get an english teaching job without these 1-2 years of experience? Its not saying its mandatory so i know it can happen im just wondering how plausible/likely this is?

咨询 | Seeking Advice (Serious) Looking for Master's Courses in China (Pure Mathematics)

Hello, all!

I am a soon-to-be Bachelor in Mathematics from Brazil, and I have been looking forward to try and apply for a Master's in China for Pure Mathematics. More specifically, for those who can help, in Algebra.

I have found just some universities, but I relaly expect to broaden my horizons here. I looked for some more prominent universities, such as PKU, but their only English taught courses are the Doctoral ones (which I expect to try and apply after my Master's, since I don't think my university's curriculum is strong enough for me to be accepted straight into the Doctoral's. I've been thinking about applying nonetheless, though.).

I would love to apply for Chinese-taught courses, but since this decision was quite recent, I have just a basic understanding of Chinese and have just took up learning it.

Any tips? Recommendations? Good articles/readings to do for this matter?

Thanks!

咨询 | Seeking Advice (Serious) Chinese and Western Music Opinion Pieces in the Chinese Language?

I am a 3rd year UG student from England studying the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto (Liang Zhu), with a focus on the Westernisation of its existence through a decolonisation lens. In an attempt to be as accurate in my research as possible, I would like to use more Chinese language articles in my dissertation, but I don't know where to find them. Does anyone know any good places to start? Specifically of the nature of opinion pieces, finding people's actual opinions on both this concerto and Chinese traditional music and Western classical music, as opposed to an objective academic study.

球赛 | Sports China’s biggest football app, Dongqiudi: Mbappé’s inappropriate remarks have deeply hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.

Background: Mbappé said a meme putting his face on Mao Zedong’s body makes him laugh and that he shares it with friends, referring to Mao as a Chinese dictator. Chinese media outlets and sponsors have already started issuing statements distancing themselves from Mbappé. If the backlash escalates into sponsor boycotts, his commercial prospects in China could take a serious hit.

中国生活 | Life in China Chinese labor market has a kill line

I used to be a frequent user of Rednote(or Xiaohongshu) and I just thought it very helpful when finding tips or shopping recommendations. Last month I decided to permanently delete it from my phone because I was so fed up with all the desperate content about labor market for a person over 28 years old. Almost all the people there will tell you that you’re doomed if you get your master’s degree over 28 and there won’t be any available job with a normal paycheck. People say they graduate in elite universities but can’t secure a decent job for around 8k RMB a month just because they are not that young. Some of these discussions can be quite extreme and even if I might suppose that not all of them are true but it still upsets me so much.
Part of the reason why employers are so picky towards age is that there are just so many job hunters who don’t have a gap year and graduate under 25. It seems that China is over saturated with young labor forces and those who are slightly older just won’t have a chance to compete. Meanwhile, another group of people are worrying about population aging and the labor force structure is going to get imbalanced in the near future.
I am in a low mood every time I see these comments on Rednote but I still feel doubtful about the apocalyptic labor market. FYI: I am a Chinese studying for master’s degree in Beijing. Unfortunately, due to inevitable reasons, I would be 28 when I graduate, because I went to another university first but dropped out because the tutor tormented so much. I didn’t waste my time and always study very hard but I am simply so unlucky.
Anyways, for those who live in China and already have a job, feel free to share your views related to that. If you are not in China , maybe this post can give you a peek through a real China and how Chinese people are struggling.

咨询 | Seeking Advice (Serious) how hard is managing MBBS and chinese?

i'm a foreign student who wants to study my bachelor's degree in china. i've heard that when i apply for MBBS they would give me chinese classes along side, but as someone who doesn't know a single word in chinese i'm afraid it would be too much to handle both at the same time.. so i'd love it if some foreign gave me some insight on this!

(i am thinking of taking a language semester there in march, or just taking chinese classes in my country here, but i'm still not sure if i'll be able to do that.)
