Do you have child at a CCISD junior high or high school? Be aware of what's happening and what's coming.
After sitting on this for a while - probably too long - I'm finally getting vocal with it. The teacher I know who has related all this to me doesn't want me posting this in a way that will cause the principal and/or district to retaliate, so I'm stuck posting it anonymously on Reddit.
My source has been a math teacher at a CCISD school for some years. And until this year, they had a pretty positive experience. The administration was pretty reasonable, and fairly good about backing its teachers on what they felt was the right thing to do in the classroom.
Then CCISD, in its infinite wisdom, chose to adopt Bluebonnet, a curriculum devised by the Texas Education Agency. Here are just a few problems with Bluebonnet:
- The curriculum forces heavy use of hard copy worksheets and longhand homework. After years of adopting technology in the classroom, kids are yanked back to the 1990s. (Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if it helps kids become less reliant on calculators, but for reasons known only to God and the apparatchiks who created this abomination, the kids are apparently expressly forbidden from bringing workbooks home.)
- Each lesson mandates the teacher to cover massive PowerPoint decks, some of them 70 slides or more in size, in the course of a single class period. Superman couldn't pull off what these teachers are being asked to accomplish.
- The curriculum developers apparently made extensive use of AI when developing the curriculum, and hallucinations abound. My source and their coworkers did a walkthrough of one of the exams, and the answer key turned out to be almost entirely wrong.
You may be wondering what precisely possessed CCISD to go with Bluebonnet when they already had access to perfectly adequate curricula. Turns out that the state paid CCISD to adopt it. This is of course perfectly rational behavior, particularly for a district like CCISD that has been facing fairly high budget shortfalls as of late, but it hardly makes the medicine go down any easier.
But wait - it gets better! To satisfy TEA requirements for visibility into student performance, CCISD took the additional measure of forcing all math teachers to adopt Eduphoria Aware, which is utterly inadequate for math. As teachers are forced to adopt these inadequate solutions alongside a horribly designed curriculum, student performance is already suffering, and is likely to continue to decline.
All this has had the net effect of destroying morale among math teachers. At my source's school, four teachers have openly said they're leaving at the end of the school year. Some have gone so far as to indicate that they'll quit midyear for the right opportunity. These are just the ones who have spoken up; the actual number likely to leave is almost certainly higher.
If this doesn't give you concern, consider this: CCISD is piloting Bluebonnet in its math departments. If the district gets its way, it will likely deploy Bluebonnet in English, science and history in the next three years. Based on my source's comments, teachers outside of math are watching what's happening with dread for what's coming for them.
Parents should at least be aware of what CCISD is inflicting on its students, and voicing their concerns with the school board - and start looking at alternatives for their kids if the district won't listen.
