Mod Announcement Updating the Wiki and Sidebar, What information would you like to see added?

Hello r/Corsetry!

In recent days behind the scenes I have been working hard to give this sub a much needed update, including creating a wiki and updating the links in the sidebar!

Here's where were at:

So far: I have created a rough wiki index and published a master list of stores that sell various corset making supplies from all over the world!

In the works: A resource list comprising of various free and paid tutorials, guides, classes, books, how to blogs, forum archives and more all about corset making! Which will hopefully go live within the week! (it will also include a list of tried and true corset patterns and pattern makers absolutely no AI slop)

-And of course at the top will have the link to all of the Aranea Black pattern files, her free mini how to guides, and archived videos that this community has recovered and saved over the years.

At this time I am not seeking specific resources to include in the Mega guide lists, as I have already compiled a lengthy comprehensive list so far.
Once this initial list is published I will open it up to user suggestions.

That said, as of right now I am interested in hearing what else you might like to see added to the sidebar or wiki???

Thank you to all who take the time to read this and give suggestions!!

Newbie Quick pattern question

Hello all! I'm about to make my first underbust corset from an Aranea Black pattern (Sonya), and I've been looking at some Youtube videos to actually figure out the construction, but I was hoping to clarify a few things.

First, am I correct in assuming that seam allowance is only added to the sides of each pattern piece as the top/bottom are encased in binding?

Second, none of the videos I've seen have given even a vague guideline for how much lacing is required - does anyone have a measurement for how much I should buy/use?

Thanks in advance, I'm excited (and also nervous) to start working on this!

I want to gift someone this steel boning!

Hello! Sorry if this is an inappropriate post for the community - I have a ton of steel boning and some plastic boning that I’ve had from a failed Halloween project for years, and rather than it go to waste I’d love to gift it to someone who can use it. I’m in California, and I don’t want to sell it, but would like to split the cost of shipping if it’s more than $5, if possible!

here are the details/measurements of what I have to gift (and I’m planning to gift it all in one go, not in pieces!)

Steel boning (All 1cm wide):

2x 18.5cm

6x 23.5cm

2x 25cm

4x 26.5cm

2x 28cm

4x 28.5cm

2x 30cm

2x 34cm

2x 36.5cm

Plastic boning: 75inches, 1/2 inch wide (messing the fabric casing)

let me know if you think you can make use of it :)

Fit help please!

Hi there!

I'm making a corset/bodice for my friend and we had a second fitting yesterday.

I havent sewn or done any pattern drafting for a few years so I've been brushing the cobwebs off my brain and would welcome some constructive criticism. I've drafted this from the 1880s Overbust corset by Mandy barrington but altered the front to have a little more of a stays vibe that my friend was after and added straps.

My friend is super happy with the compression amount, I'm going to take off another cm around the waist as she wants to be cinched in a little more.

These are my key concerns/things that need to be altered:

- The point at the join of the CF panel and the second panel at her bust is super flat and going straight up - do I need to put more of an exaggerated curve into it to get it to lay flush with her bust.

- I read in a post yesterday i think that corsets from this time had a lower/natural bust line - for my friends bust size should I slash the whole thing at the waist and raise by an inch? should I then make the seams on CF and side panel more curved for her bust - ie follow the bust seams of the Aranea Black Dolores corset a little?

- The back strap placement I'm going to move over toward her arm by a few cm and add a few cm under her arm and taper out to CF and CB.

I really want to get this right for her! and I am quite proud/happy I've come this far after not doing anything sewing wise for years.

Thankyou!!

Newbie Help with understanding boning channels

(I might delete the post at some point, since I get heavily embarrassed posting pictures of me.)

Hello all, so I wanted for a while to make a corset vest for men; I find their structure to be very visually appealing.

I have no prior knowledge on corset making or pattern drafting, so it was probably a bit dumb of me to think things would go smoothly.

I first copied a vest I find fits me well.

This vest has a princess cut to it, which I thought would be great to make into a boning channel.

After that, I based myself on pictures online to see where to add other boning channels.

You can see my mockup on the picture above, as well as the fit I would like to achieve on the second image.

I am aware of the fitting issues with the neckline, as well as the fact that the fabric is puckering.

I didn't use any kind of interfacing to reinforce the outside fabric, and it had some elasticity to it, but I intend on doing so on the final product.

I talked to a friend of mine, and she said that the boning channels are too straight and should have more of a curve.

I'm interested in knowing what you think I should do and if you have any advice.

As much as it will pain me, if you recommend I start everything over, then so be it; I'm here to learn.

So please be honest, but not cruel.

Also english is not my native language, so sorry for speeling errors you might encounter

Historical corsets/ stays

So I’m fairly new to both sewing and corsets, but I am trying to figure out whether I should attempt to make one for my wife or keep trying to find one that works. Her friend group got us into historical reenacting, (specifically 1750s French colonial New England), and together we have made about 5 skirts, 6 chemises and a few other smaller projects. She is very good at patterning, but insists that I am more precise with my stitching. That being said, neither of us had much luck with sewing new bias tape around the perimeter of her current corset after attempting to switch from plastic to steel boning. I would very much appreciate any advice or tips on getting started.

Newbie My hips are too wide

Hi, I bought a cheap corset off Amazon, IM SORRY IM POOR AND I NEEDED ONE FOR HALLOWEEN FAST, anyways, I have a smaller chest and wider hips. So I bought the size I thought would fit best, but now my hips are too wide for the corset, like it flaring out and pitching me. Would it be sinful for me to just not lace a couple of the bottom eyelets?

1870s corset bust height?

Can someone please point me towards some resources on where it was fashionable for the bust to sit?
Especially in comparison to modern bust placement (apex in line with middle of your upper arm)

I thought the corset would be too long because I’m short and usually have to shorten everything.
But I think it’s actually too short?

(I’ll take photos tomorrow and make a new post but in the meantime I was just wondering.)

Newbie Covering a premade corset with a different fabric??

Post image
5 Upvotes

So maybe I’m making this way more complicated than I have to—but I’m not experienced in corset making or sewing at all.

I’m trying to cover this premade corset in white satin fabric in a way that makes it look like the satin is the original base.

I’m thinking maybe tracing the original pattern of the corset sections onto the satin and then sewing them on, but I’m not sure what to do about the boning.

Anyway is any of this possible? Is there a way to do this? Can anyone help or give advice?

Swan inspired gown 🦢

A gorgeous swan inspired gown fit for a princess 🦢.

This elegant ensemble consists of a lace-up structured bodice with ribbon and gathered lace details, a black gathered underskirt for added fullness, and a gorgeous 3-layer overskirt with ruched gathering, lace hemline, bow details, delicate lace layers, and black feathers to complete the look.🖤

The materials that were used to create this gown are breathtakingly beautiful in person. The white material used almost reflects the colors surrounding it (hence why it has a bit of a different color to it in each photo!) depending on the lighting.

I’m so happy that I had the opportunity to bring the sketch of this gown to life ! 🤍

Newbie First time altering a corset - please help!

Hi! I got this corset at a thrift store, and I'm looking for advice on how to alter it to fit my chest better. I've altered lots of clothes before, but never anything with boning!

As you can see in the photos, there's a decent amount of gaping, and not enough support...either my boobs are going to fly out of this or the entire corset is going to slip down, especially because I do a lot of dancing, haha. It's definitely not a high quality corset, so I'm not too worried about doing a perfect, professional job, but I'm still stuck on where to start...Adding more boning? Swapping out the current boning for something stronger? Reinforcing the fabric? Tightening it along the sides or in the back? Adding bra padding? Adding those silicone strips along the top? All of the above? None of the above? Would definitely appreciate some advice before I start ripping open seams, haha!

Thank you so much!! 😊

Corset Making What fabric is this?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Optimistic beginner here—I’m trying to identify the fabric and materials in this corset and trying to figure out where to start. My guess is a muslin mock up, but I am guessing general materials would be rigilene boning, bra pad, bra wiring (?) appliqués, and some sort of mesh fabric? I can’t figure out what it is. And then I suppose some form of satin for lining?

TIA!

EDIT: Thank you so much everybody this is a super helpful starting point and has helped me learn a lot!! I’ve gotten the pattern to start with, I’ll attempt it on canvas first as a strength layer. This is the dress I am trying to replicate the bodice of: https://leahdagloria.com/products/anastasia-gown

Let me know if any better pictures can verify what the fabric may be. Thank you all!

SOS I’m paralyzed by indecision with this corset construction

Hello everyone, I am relatively a novice when it comes to corsets so ive only made a few. And like a newbie, the last time I made my corset, I did not take notes and I fear I might have made a mistake this time around.

So I had hoped to make a three layer corset. I’m going for a more fashion look, so I cut out a fashion layer (upcycled men’s suit), a strength layer (coutile), and a lining (upcycled tablecloth cotton 40, polyester 60.) I have sewn each layer together separately and was going to sew my boning channels between my lining and coutile, I’m worried that my fashion layer will not be flat AND that my lining layer isn’t sturdy enough for the boning channels. It is a thicker cotton poly blend, but I’m nervous lol.

I’m not entirely sure if I should seam rip and flatline (2 options: the lining to the coutile or the fashion layer to the coutile),
OR just go ahead with my original plan of using lining and coutile and roll pin after I turn the fashion layer. And hope it looks good when I place the binding on the bottom.

I guess I could also just use twill tape and skip the inner lining all together, but then I run into the fashion layer not being flat again. Now you see why I’m so indecisive hehe. Any insight will be much appreciated!!

I apologize if this is too many questions. Answer at your discretion. Thank you so much!!

I made a previous post here asking for fit advice, and wanted to update with the (mostly) finished item!! I'm adjusting the top just a bit, but otherwise, I'm super happy with the fit! I got a 2" waist reduction, and I think this will be a perfect base for my Jessica Rabbit Halloween costume.

made for a school project. the construction isn’t immaculate, but i’m pretty happy with the results considering it was my first corset, first garment and the second sewing project i had ever made (first was a tote bag lol).

materials used were cotton canvas tarp for the strength layer, old bamboo lyocell sheets for the lining and scraps from 15ish pairs of old jeans and shorts that don’t fit me anymore for the fashion layer, and a piece of cardboard to hold the structured part up. flat steel boning for the front and back, spiral steel for the sides. used the aranea black Sylvia pattern with a heavy amount of grading and length adjustments.

since it was only meant to hold up for my presentation, the denim isn’t attached all the way around, though it did stay where it needed to much better than i’d expected. initially i was going to toss this the second the assignment was over, but since i received more compliments on this outfit than anything i’ve ever worn in my life, i’m currently planning to sew a sturdier, more breathable base potentially with a front busk closure (lacing without one is NOT for the feint of heart) and maybe figure out a snap situation to attach the denim layer over top, as well as add a more permanent structural element for the wing situation. if anyone has any suggestions for this please let me know, i’m open to hearing them!

Lacing without a busk

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm making my first corset. I finally got the grommets/eyelets situation figured out. Now I'd love some assistance with lacing. I laced it using a butterfly lacing diagram. I didn't use a pattern with a busk and now I'm regretting it. Tightening and loosening the laces is taking forever and it feels impossible to get it looking even on my dress form. Plus now my little "wings or ears" are really long.

Also my husband, who knows nothing about corsetry, is going to be the one lacing me up. I'll make sure to do some practice runs but any advice on making this smooth and not frustrating is welcome!

Edit: there is straight steel boning on either side of the grommets but I'm thinking that the boning channel might be too wide and the boning is flipping sideways in the channel. I'm going to narrow down the channel and see if that makes a difference.

What product for tipping a bra underwire - UK?

Hello, I am not making anything from scratch but repairing a bra. The underwire snapped in half on one cup and I bought a replacement. The new underwire fits perfectly but it's about half a cm too long. I can cut it down to size but the webstore advised using a tipping fluid so it doesn't stab me once I sew it in lol. But all I can find in the UK is tipping powder which doesn't look straightforward to use.

Is there another, easier option? Preferably something already in fluid form? Or is the powder easy to use? I don't have a heat gun, this is just a one-off repair that I was hoping would be much cheaper than buying a replacement bra for £40! If there's something I can buy from a bricks and mortar shop that would be ideal, otherwise at least from a UK online retailer.

Does anyone have any recommendations for coutil/boning in Hong Kong/surrounding countries? (I don’t want to pay a lot in shipping/tax)
