Head's up: June 12th protest of Reddit's API changes.

This subreddit will be joining in on the June 12th protest of Reddit's API changes that will essentially kill all 3rd party Reddit apps.

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .

This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What can you do as a user?

  • Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.

  • Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join the coordinated mod effort at /r/ModCoord.

  • Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

  • Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

What can you do as a moderator?

Thank you for your patience in the matter,

-Mod Team

I want to be turned down for a loan on purpose.

A family member wants me to co sign on a loan, I don't want to but I need them to not know that to just think that the credit union turned me down. Will freezing my credit and letting them run it work? Any other suggestions?

Which credit unions have the 500 dollar bonus/100 software credit Elan Business Cash Preferred Card credit card? How many of these can you get before Elan stops you from getting new cards/new bonuses?

Forum credit union, MIT federal credit union, any other credit unions have it? This business credit card below

Business Cash Preferred Card

$500 cash back

When you spend $5,000 within the first 150 days

$100 annual statement credit

Applied every year to your account after 11 consecutive monthly software transactions2

Annual Fee:None

  1. Questions in title

  2. Were you able to harvest the software credit for each one?

I have the somewhat related US bank triple cash business card which has a similar software bonus, hoping it will work for 1 password. Maybe better to use with which one of the LLM subscriptions?

The closest US bank version of this seems (or the other way around) to be this:

U.S. Bank Business Essentials™ Visa® Card

Earn $500 cash back.

Just spend $5,000 in the first 150 days of opening your account.2

  1. Does Elan care if you already have the US bank's similar credit card?

Credit union is actually debt union

I just realized we’ve been lied to. Credit unions are debt unions. We get debt from credit unions who check your credit score, which is based on how good you are when it comes to taking up debt.

WTF

California Credit Unions: Best Ones?

Hello, I'm moving to Los Angeles today and I would like to join a credit union. I've been researching a few on NerdWallet but I've never had a credit union before so I don't know what is good and what is great (and what is bad). Please give advice, tia :)

Aside from DCU for its 5-6% on 1000 bucks and NFCU, what other credit unions do you consider to be keeper/long term accounts to use for you personally?

Trustage attack, no refunds and still charging us

Hello

I could use some help

I work in the funeral industry and we use trustage as the contract payments.

My mom passed away aug 1, and we had her service. Yet my dad is still being charged for my moms contract, there was also an issue error with an over paid balance that needs to be refunded.

As of october, my dad is still being charged for my moms contract (that they claim they cant close) and theyre refusing to give back a refund of all the over charges and the over payment refund.

Weve called, emailed, had my coworkers do it for me, and absolutely no resolve... What are we meant to do?

They keep refusing refund claims and still continue to charge us.

Auto loans: need recommendations

Hi everyone,

I'm based out of South Florida and looking to finance my first-ever car. I've never had any loans, so my credit file could be thin for most companies out there. I've only had one credit card so far, and my credit age is almost 18 months.

I'm trying to finance a car, putting $3,000 down with a $17,000 loan. A couple of them have declined, and I'm also an international student. I can stay here for a pretty long time legally and have authorization to work as well.

I was wondering if there are any credit unions that people can recommend so that I can get my car financed.

I’m in the finance space and want to better understand what’s been happening. I’ve read a bit about it. If I have an old trustage 401k can I get to it?

Leaving B of A for credit union?

Thumbnail
7 Upvotes

I've had Bank of America for 20 years and happy with their service (surprising for some or you I know) however since I no longer have direct deposit and im over 26 I have to pay a $12 monthly fee. I keep the balance above 1,500 so I avoid it... but i have to keep adding to it to avoid the fee.

At Navy Federal there is no balance requirement and no fees.. but i hate the app! I just hate credit union apps.

Have any of you left B of A for a credit union and been happy with that decision?

Questions for people familiar with Langley Federal Credit Union's credit cards and/or applying for two cards using just one hard pull

I was watching this youtube video "7 Reasons Why You Need to Start Banking With Langley Federal Credit Union"

It said something about this: "Double Dipping: Members can apply for two credit products (such as two credit cards or a loan and a credit card) within a 30-day window using only one hard credit pull (4:19 - 4:53)."

The video seems to be from 2024 though

1. Anyone tried this recently (when?) Ex: applying for two Langely credit cards within a 30 day window?

2. Within that 30 day window, what's a good amount of time to space the two Langley FCU credit card applications out?

3. Anything that could go wrong/downsides of this strategy?

4. Is having two cards on your profile (even if only one hard pull potentially) still not worth it?

5. Should you... combine this with any intentional credit freezing strategies?'

I'm eyeing these two cards to try to get a 200+100 bonus.

A California federal court allows a zero-fee antitrust damages model in Affinity v. Apple

I wrote the American Counsel analysis linked below. It examines a question for credit unions issuing cards used through Apple Pay: what would issuers pay under competitive conditions?

A zero-dollar competitive price is an economic claim that needs an explanation. Why would a supplier provide the service without charging this particular group of customers?

The Apple Pay issuer-fee dispute in Affinity Credit Union v. Apple Inc. makes that question concrete. The damages model discussed in my article treats zero as the competitive fee for card issuers. If liability and that benchmark were established, the calculation would count the fees paid during the class period. The difficult work lies in establishing the benchmark.

A useful comparison must account for what each service provides, how the supplier recovers its costs, and whether benefits elsewhere in the business could support a zero issuer fee. Finding another service that charges nothing does not answer those questions. A positive fee in the challenged market also cannot establish that competition would preserve it.

The September 23 order addresses class certification and expert admissibility. It permits the case and model to proceed without deciding antitrust liability or the correct competitive price.

I examine the model and those procedural limits in The American Counsel. The stakes are in the comparison: the model needs an economic reason why this group of customers would pay nothing under competitive conditions.

Whats the Difference Between Caisses Populaires and Credit Unions?

I’ve been doing a lot of research on personal finance in the past few weeks and basically went down a rabbit hole with Caisses Populaires and Credit Unions.

In my research it seems like they’re essentially the same thing except that Caisses Populaires are basically like Credit Unions but primarily based in French speaking communities around the world and especially in Quebec.

However, this got me wondering: if they’re essentially the same thing but for different languages why do they seem to be so distinguished from one another online with them both having separate Wikipedia articles, separate investopedia articles, etc.

I also stumbled upon some group called the Desjardins group which is based in Quebec and seems to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest Caisses Populaires in the world so if somebody could give some background on that and how they operate that would be great too.

Name-to-account matching is being pushed into the payment rail itself rather than sitting as a separate check

Worth tracking for anyone on the payments side. Pre-transfer name-to-account matching, combined with screening and fraud scoring, is increasingly being embedded directly into international transfer routing rather than run as a separate step before submission.

The reason it matters is where the friction lands. A name check done before the payment is submitted can stop an authorised push payment fraud at the only point where the member can still change their mind. one after submission, it is a reconciliation exercise.

The hard part is not the matching logic. It is the tolerance. Legal names, preferred names, married names, initials, transliterations and business trading names all produce mismatches that are entirely innocent. Tighten the threshold and you block legitimate payments and train members to click through warnings. Loosen it and the control stops meaning anything.

There is also the question of what a warning is actually for. If a member sees a soft mismatch warning and proceeds anyway, has the institution discharged something, or has it just moved the liability onto the member?

For people running at a credit union or community bank: what does your name-match tolerance look like in practice, and do you track how often members override a mismatch warning and then report fraud?
