Off-Topic Counterpoint to all the "Omg Cyprus unlivable! No opportunities! No dating life! Everything sucks!" posts.
Born and raised Cypriot, never lived in any other country in my life, but I've visited about 20 of them.
All my life growing up, I thought the same. I thought "damn, when I graduate I'll really have to get out of here and go somewhere like the UK or the USA to live my life, there's nothing here". Well, when I did graduate, due to circumstances (no rich parents that can pay for my expenses etc), I couldn't go study/live abroad. Eventually, I came to realize that I'm glad I didn't.
For context, I'm a 90s kid, and even back then growing up, the whole "koufetta" of "Cyprus is just a tiny island that's nothing like the real world out there, you gotta go live in the real world if you wanna know what life's all about / if you wanna be a big shot", this koufeta was just as prevalent.
I call it the grass is greener on the other side syndrome. Life's tough for many people, obviously. And when life's tough, what do most people do? Naturally, they try to figure out why. What to blame/change. After examining all the why's, one of the easiest copes is "It's just this fucking place. I gotta get outta here. Then it'll be fine". It then becomes a confirmation bias/feedback loop, and eventually you really do end up hating the place. But it never was the place.
Opportunities? Man we've been living in a globalized economy since the mid 2000s. You can get a job literally anywhere in the world if you're good enough. Some of them will even pay you to move there. Some of them don't care and they pay you anyway while you live from where you are. Is it easy? No. Was life ever easy? Maybe in the 70-80's, sure. But complaining about how much easier older generations had it isn't gonna make today easier. Neither will moving to another country.
Live within your means and grind it out. You weren't born in fucking Burundi of Africa and you complain about your circumstances. You basically rolled a 99 on the dice by being born in a country like this. Yes it sucks to be running on capitalism's hamster wheel but that's how it is and how it's always been for the vast majority of us. Cyprus isn't the villain here.
