We have seen a slight uptick lately in people posting AI generated text walls, so I wanted to address it.
We do not allow any AI generated content. That’s just the rules. Yes, it also applies to you. No, it doesn’t matter that you think it’s really good.
My actual biggest issue is that some of these text posts are actually pretty interesting, subject-wise, and could spark good conversation, but the poster has felt the need to AI generate the post, instead of just writing it themselves!
Yes, it’s obvious. Even your text post that you totally wrote but just used AI to clean up a bit.
Stop it. Just write and post your own words. We’re not expecting you to be the next incarnation of Pratchett, and he would be the first to say that your own words, no matter how poorly written, are worth way more than some AI generated slop.
I’d love to have a conversation about the Unseen in ‘Unseen Academicals’ or the Librarian’s authority.
But I want to have that conversation with another human being, not their digital fluffer.
If Terry had been here to see the advent of AI, I imagine he’d have written some very funny and cutting OpEd pieces about it.
Let us read your words. Let us engage with you.
Peace.

UPDATE 23/04: I'll do another batch of requests tonight, so don't feel like you've missed the bus. It just takes a while 😂 I'm glad everyone is enjoying this!
+++
Subtitle: I'm bored and feeling a bit rubbish so I want to spread some cheer around
Do you want a custom flair in this community?
Think "GNU Pterry" or "An actual seamstress" or "Ho, the Megapode!". Text emojis such as 𓆉 or 𓃰 should also work
Stick the request in this thread, starting with "Flair:" and I'll change it for you
Rules: must be vaguely Discworld/Pratchett related and can't be offensive.
I will be copying your request exactly so make sure it's spelt and formatted correctly. Mini-caps and backwards/upside down text all work
+++
Quick update: Keep them coming, I'll respond to you when I've done it so you know! I might be a bit slow as it's me but I'll get round to you all!
Further update: You're all nice people and I'm sure you can share if someone already "has" the flair you want. There's like 62,000+ of you lot here. If we don't have duplicates I think we'd each need a sentence from the books!
Another update: I've created a monster... I appreciate all of you, you absolute looneys. May all your days be filled with nice things 💜

Just checking with you smart people because i've never (I know, I know!) watched Lawrence of Arabia, but I thought that might be the reference for Carrot while in Klatch.
I probably have to watch the movie now which will thrill my fella to no end. 😊

I'm looking for a collection of Discworld idioms or sayings and all I can find are endless collections of the best quotes. That's lovely, and it's been good reading, but what I'm really after is a list of uniquely Discworld sayings along the lines of "a leopard cannot change their shorts" or "music with rocks in". Anyone have a link to a repository of that specific sort of quote?

SPOILERS LIKELY for City Watch
I just reread Guards! Guards! and was thinking about the plot in that book and how risky it clearly was (the state of *that* book for one thing!). It makes for a very fun story but is so ridiculous!
It got me curious about which villains people like best from the series, and who had the best/most realistic/entertaining plan 😈

I am currently listening to Feet of Clay again, English is not my native language, so I always wondered why her name is so funny. It's not any weirder than Corporal Visits full name, or even Nobby Nobs, there are a ton of characters with weird names. 😅
I get that it's not a real dwarf name and of course I get why it's funny, but why is it such a big deal in the books? Is there any hidden meaning or reference I am missing?
r/discworld • u/kam_pra • 1d ago
Wondering about names like little bottom, vetinari, moist von lipwig, dunmanifestin, casanunda and so many other names we are so used to reading in his books.
Did he get a flash of inspiration when he got the perfect double meaning or do you think he had a load of notes where he tried out variations to see which was best for his characters or scenes.
So with casanunda he already might have had a dwarvish lothario with a ladder that needed a name or did the dwavishness and ladder come because he already had the perfect name?

Day 24. Bake
The one positive thing you could say about the bread products around him was that they were probably as edible now as they were on the day they were baked. Forged was a better term. Dwarf bread was made as a meal of last resort and also as a weapon and a currency. Dwarfs were not, as far as Vimes knew, religious in any way, but the way they thought about bread came close.

Ok let's try something new: DEFINITELY make a new top level comment for every single suggestion even if it's already been made. It's totally not a waste of time!

I'd put off The Shepherd's Crown for years. Even though I bought it when it came out in hardback. Just didn't want to admit the end.
When the kobo bundle came along I couldn't resist and started a chronological reread for the first time in a while, knowing I would get to the end this time. Had to listen to The Last Hero and Raising Steam as for some reason they were not included.
The Shepherd's Crown is better than I expected. I only cried at the start
since I knew what was coming. "Mind how you go" got me big time.
I didn't get bored at any point, even through those whose worth in my memory was not the greatest. (looking at you, Equal Rites, Reaper Man, Moving Pictures, Making Money)
Colour of Magic, despite the less than glowing reviews it gets here, remains top tier for me along with The Truth, Thief Of Time, Night Watch, Carpe Jugulum and The Wee Free Men. To be honest, there's not one stinker in the lot.
To Rincewind, Granny, Nanny, Magrat and Tiff, to Vimes and his crew, to Mustrum and his, to Moist, LuTze, De Worde, Vetinari, Susan and Death - thank you for being my companions.
For STP, thank you so much for -ing everything, the stories, the jokes, the punes, the morality, the known references and the Dammits.
I've read practically nothing else for 2 years. I'm not sure I know what to do now unless I reread Covenant or some Banks for a continuation of the nostalgia trip.

I am moderately crazy, and have been challenged by a friend to crochet 30 dolls that fall under one "theme" for my 30th birthday. This is well under way, and obviously experience has taught me nothing, so I started to wonder whether I might do a similar thing for my 40th. And quite naturally the number 40 will lead one to the 41 Discworld books. Therefore, my current plan is to crochet one doll per book. Ideally, each doll should represent an iconic character who shows up in that book without any repeats. However, for some books I'm drawing a bit of a blank. My current list is as follows:
1 The Colour of Magic - Rincewind
2 The Light Fantastic - the Librarian
3 Equal Rites - Esk??
4 Mort - Death
5 Sourcery - the Luggage
6 Wyrd Sisters - Granny
7 Pyramids - Teppic (or an Assassin in general)??
8 Guards! Guards! - Carrot
9 Eric - ???
10 Moving Pictures - Gaspode??
11 Reaper Man - Death of Rats
12 Witches Abroad - Nanny
13 Small Gods - Brutha (incl. Om)
14 Lords and Ladies - Magrat
15 Men at Arms - Angua
16 Soul Music - Ponder Stibbons
17 Interesting Times - Twoflower
18 Maskerade - Agnes
19 Feet of Clay - Cheery
20 Hogfather - the Hogfather??
21 Jingo - Colon
22 The Last Continent - Ridcully
23 Carpe Jugulum - Mightily Oats??
24 The Fifth Elephant - Sibyl
25 The Truth - Otto
26 Thief of Time - Susan
27 The Last Hero - Leonard of Quirm
28 The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents - the Rats
29 Night Watch - Vimes
30 The Wee Free Men - the Feegles
31 Monstrous Regiment - Polly
32 A Hat Full of Sky - Tiffany
33 Going Postal - Moist
34 Thud! - Detritus
35 Wintersmith - ???
36 Making Money - Adora Belle
37 Unseen Academicals - ???
38 I Shall Wear Midnight - ???
39 Snuff - Nobby
40 Raising Steam - Vetinari
41 The Shepherd's Crown - ???
Has anyone got any ideas for the ???s, or any improvement/important folk I forgot? I'm also fully open to making swaps - the later Tiffany books are mostly tricky because they have few characters who are either really central to their book, like the Rats, or keep showing up in multiple ones. Miss Tick might work? Thanks for any suggestions!

Day 23. Dapper
'My name’s Casanunda,’ he said. ‘I’m reputed to be the world’s greatest lover. What do you think?’
Nanny Ogg looked him up and down or, at least, down and further down.
‘You’re a dwarf,’ she said.
‘Size isn’t important.'

Hi everyone,
Some friends and I have started playing a Discworld TTRPG adventure and I am very pleased with our party, hence I thought I'd share it here.
There is a human who is deeply in love with words and sells the right words to everybody who can afford it.
He thinks the Times makes an awfull job and is utterly annoyed by the crossword section since the use below average words (rarely used, yes, but there's a reason for that).
Then there is another human, who strongly believes he is a vampire. He copies all their behaviour... even joined the black ribboners.
Our dwarf is a trickster who once told the city watch he works as a detective and now has to live by it. In order to learn the trade, he reads different books and behaves like the main character in those books... one day he's Sherlock, another day he's like Monk.
The fourth member is a Golem, whose instruction (ink on paper) were not dry when handled and got smeared and therefor he does not know what to do.
Last but not least there's another human who as a child was forced to bathe in the Ankh and now he smells like it.
All these characters habe come together to form a new newspaper, the Better Times. They will write the same things as the Times, but better, as well as the solution to the crosswords.
I am looking forward to playing the adventure!

A little odd maybe, but I started the Watch Series with The Fifth Elephant. There was no mention of how Syvil looked like in there. I imagined her for so long as Margrat ngl, skinny, refined, a lil eccentric.
Then I read Guard! Guards! And I kid you not, took over 100 pages for any mentions of her looks. I found it intentional. It was Cap'n Vimes who met her first, and at most I got that she is tall. It was NOBBY who started the fat jokes!
