Question Large, fast drone in Houston

So, I'm a fan of all things flying and drones. I've designed and built helis, quads, and all that. I say that, to say that I'm not unfamiliar with drone builds, or operational limits and all that.

Having said that, I live in the Houston area. Twice, in the last 10 days, I've seen what appears to be a large drone flying near the IAH airport at a high rate of speed. The first time it happened, it wasn't the best lighting, so my dashcam didn't actually pick up anything of substance. I just saw it again this evening but can't find the vid so far on my dashcam.

What I've seen is:

  • A LARGE aircraft, with a 5 or 6 prop setup. It had white lights, but no navigational lights that I could see. But here's the thing, it was flying horizontally, with the props all aligned perpendicular-ish to the ground. And it was MOVING. Well in excess of 100 knots, if I were estimating.
  • It was substantial, but with no apparent payload ability. What I mean is, in between all the prop sets, there wasn't anything other than support structure to hold it all together. Like, it was just out looking for a airspeed record or something. lol
  • It was just North of Houston proper, along the Hardy Toll Road, near IAH, if anyone wants to look it up.

The first time I saw it, it was just getting light, and I wasn't super sure of what I saw. This time, it was about 2:45 or so, so I could see it clearly. This thing looked BIG for a drone. Like maybe 15-20 foot in 'wingspan'. I'm still digging through my dashcam footage, so hopefully, I'll find it in there somewhere.

Anyway, I was just curious if any of y'all knew what this might be.

Cheers!

Question Looking into getting a drone for indoor use, able to accept a pre-programmed path

Good day!

I doubt something capable of this exists, but looking for a small drone that can fly a pretty programmed path indoors in a fairly small room. The main use is to stream it's video to a streaming platform and tour the room over a set period of time. Following a path with some elevation changes of a few feet.

Is this possible? I've been looking through the reddit and not seen much that fits what I'm aiming for, so open to suggestions.

Repair Where can I buy replacement parts for a FIMI Mini SE drone? (Shipping to Brazil)

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to find replacement parts for my FIMI Mini SE drone, but I'm having trouble finding sellers that offer these specific components.

I've attached two pictures of the parts I'm looking for:

  1. Front sensor module: The small PCB with two optical sensors, LEDs, and a ribbon cable.
  2. LED ribbon cable: The small flexible PCB labeled "LED" and "MB" with connectors on both ends.

I'm currently in Brazil, so I'm looking for stores, suppliers, or individuals who can ship these parts internationally.

I've considered AliExpress, but I'm not sure what the exact part names or numbers are, which makes searching difficult.

Does anyone know:

  • Where I could buy these components?
  • Whether there are compatible parts from other FIMI drone models?
  • Any repair communities, specialized suppliers, or alternative sources for FIMI spare parts?

I'd also appreciate any technical documentation or part numbers that could help me identify them.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Question How do you sell used drones locally in the Philippines or internationally (US and Canada)?

Hey everyone!

I'm from the Philippines, and I'm curious about how people buy and sell used drones, whether locally or internationally, particularly between the Philippines, United States, and Canada.

I'm mainly interested in selling DJI drones, FPV drones, and other quadcopters, including used or refurbished units.

I have a few questions:

  1. Local selling (Philippines): What are the best platforms or marketplaces for selling used drones in the Philippines besides Facebook Marketplace and Carousell?

  2. International selling: Are there any websites or marketplaces that allow sellers from the Philippines to sell drones to buyers in the US or Canada?

  3. Shipping: How do you ship drones internationally, especially when dealing with lithium batteries? Which couriers are recommended?

  4. Customs and regulations: Are there any export or import restrictions, permits, customs duties, or other requirements when shipping drones between these countries?

  5. Payments: What are the safest payment methods for international transactions to avoid scams or chargebacks?

  6. Marketplace requirements: Do platforms like eBay or other drone marketplaces require sellers to have a US or Canadian address or bank account?

  7. FPV drones: Are there any dedicated marketplaces or communities for selling FPV drones, custom-built quadcopters, and spare parts internationally?

I'd also love to hear from anyone in the Philippines who has successfully sold drones to international buyers, particularly in the US or Canada.

Any recommendations, experiences, or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Question Real estate photography start up.

Hey all. I’m looking at getting into real estate photography, specifically drone photography. I’ve had my 107 for a few years now, and use it occasionally at my current job. I’ve played with a couple different DJI models but not enough to have a real opinion. I’m near a coastal community and there’s a lot of growth and high end/waterfront type homes. I googled and didn’t really see much offered in the way of drone photography in the area. Just looking for some help and opinions of what drone or drones I might want to start out with, and any other equipment that you think I might need to invest in to start a quality service.

Science, Research, Technology Is there any way to identify drones when you see one? Do they broadcast any type of signal that can analyzed?

I was loading groceries in my Jeep outside of Walmart, and a decent sized drone was flying slowly over the parking lot. It was going back and forth in a pattern, and I could see the front camera moving around in all directions. This is in a rural area.

I own a DJI Lito drone, fairly new to drones and this tech. Any tips or advise on how to avoid extreme glare in the phone screen when shooting? I live in an extremely sunny place and use my phone with an RC2 type controller (using my iPhone as screen)

Discussion Pocket follow-me drones (HoverAir X1, DJI Neo): How do you find it?

Hi all, I'm new to the drone space and looking at getting these sort of product for travelling, and for either snow or water activities mainly, wanted to hear from owners of similar products what do use it for, if it's worth it, what are it's shortcomings etc

- What do you mainly use yours for?

- Why did you pick it over a bigger drone or an action cam?

- What are the general shortcomings from current products like mentioned in title?

Repair Bent Parrot ar.drone 2.0 propeller

I recently bought a parrot ar.drone 2.0 second hand. I got the app after a lot of trying and attempted to lift it off the ground, but it was just rotating on the ground aimlessly. I took out a propeller and realised it was bent. I tried 3d printing a new one, but it was way to sensible. I found listings for new propellers on the internet, but they either couldn't be deliverd in my country or where out of my budget. Is there a way to straighten this propeller and make the drone fly again? Photo attached bllow

Question When Do You Replace Your Props

Hello all. Fairly new DJI Mini 5 Pro user here. I bought my drone two months ago, and I've been flying it quite a bit...just having some fun and practicing for no real reason other than to practice. I've had no crashes, no situations where the prop(s) hit anything, and for the most part I hand launch and catch most of my flights. My props look fine, but is there a useful life expectancy I should be aware of for my props?

Thanks for your answers!

Question [Phoenix] Class G locations that would also be good for ground video

Trying to compile a list of interesting drone/aerial visuals that are within "Class G" airspace around the Phoenix area/region.

Don't want to mess with areas that require LAANC/authorization. Just want to be able to park, put the drone up, and know that it's safe & not breaking any rules/laws.

And if there are any cool things on the ground in those same flight areas, I'd love to know what to check out!

I just looked at the PHX sectional map, and man, almost the entire metro area is covered by unflyable zones. So, any help finding some cool "beauty shot" locations (in Class G airspace) would be greatly appreciated.

Question Help me identify this drone that was hovering over my house

Post image
0 Upvotes

I was out doing yard work and this drone flew overhead. I tried to signal for it to leave me alone but wouldn’t. I grabbed my camera to take a picture and shortly after grab my binoculars. When whoever was piloting saw me looking at it through my binoculars it flew off out of view. It returned about 20mins later. It had blue and red/orange lights but they weren’t strobe lights like you’d see on a police car. Any idea what kind of drone this is? Is it a police drone?
