This is what happens when scrolling the internet at 2am. I’ve never owned or even ridden an e-bike before but at $1000 off I hit the add to cart and bought myself this bike. It’s a class three whatever that means. I pick it up from REI in a week. It’s returnable up to a full year if I decide I don’t like it. Anyone have any experience with this bike

Bike purchase question Honest advice - E-trike for 82 year old?

My father-in-law wants to buy an e-trike to get around his village, because he has been told not to drive for 6 months after having a cardiac event and receiving a new pacemaker.

He is understandably feeling cooped up at home (outskirts of a suburban Irish village) and wants his freedom to get to the shops etc., but I feel like this is a ridiculous idea.

If someone is not able to drive due to risk of fainting or heart attack behind the wheel, how much better off would they be operating a heavy electric bike!?

Additionally, he is not the same cyclist or motorist he used to be - he has trouble extending his neck to look both ways at junctions, he has hearing issues, and he even fell off his regular bike on the ice a few years ago and broke his pelvis.

How do we talk him out of this sensitively? I can’t find any source to share with him that actually backs up how misguided this idea seems to me.

For the senior community who ride e-bikes or trikes (or their kids) …am I just being over-cautious?

Any thoughts on this?

Thank you!!

Bike build question New to bikes, need recommendations for a MTB suitable for a 3000W conversion kit

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m pretty new to mountain bikes and I’m planning on building my first electric bike using a 3000W 72V rear hub motor conversion kit with a 40Ah battery.

The kit requires 135mm open rear dropouts (quick release), so I’m trying to find a mountain bike that’s compatible and has enough frame space to fit the fairly large 72V 40Ah battery.

I’ve been looking at bikes like the Polygon Cascade 3/4, Giant Talon 3 and Specialized Rockhopper, but I’m not sure which would be the best option.

I’m based in Australia and ideally want something budget-friendly, either new or second-hand. I’m also planning on using reinforced torque arms and upgrading the brakes if needed.

Does anyone have recommendations for specific bikes or models that would work? I’m particularly interested in finding something with the correct dropout spacing, enough room for the battery and a frame suitable for handling this much power.

Any advice on compatibility, frame strength or things I should watch out for would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Velotric Nomad 2x vs Monarc Marker - Cannot Decide

I am so torn between these 2 ebikes. This will be my 1st ebike purchase but have been doing a lot of research trying to make an informed decision. The Velotric appeals to me because of the rear tire suspension, 15 motor settings, and extended size of the battery. The Monarc is equally appealing for the price, touchscreen display, dual batteries included, 5 year warranty, and 4 piston breaks. I have test ridden the Velotric and loved the feel but know the Monarc will be comparable just without the rear tire shock. Any suggestions you have or advice on which way I should lean for my purchase??

do not buy qlife bikes

when i tell you the build quality is terrible, it's terrible. i hit the front brake on my spark plus and the rotor bent itself to the point where the wheel can't spin. my drivetrain broke somehow and now makes a terrible scratching noise while accelerating. luckily the customer service is amazing and replaced all these parts but this thing really is a piece of shit. if you have qlife spark plus money, save it.

Are moped-style e-bikes becoming genuinely practical, or are they mostly about the motorcycle look?

I’ve noticed more e-bikes borrowing the moped and motorcycle look, with compact frames, 20×4.0 fat tires, and full suspension. Some models also come with a 48V 20Ah battery, a 1000W motor, and hydraulic disc brakes.

The style definitely stands out, but I’m curious how riders feel about the real-world trade-offs. Does the moped-style design make the bike more comfortable and confidence-inspiring, or does it mean extra weight and less nimble handling? Where do you think these bikes make the most sense: commuting, casual rides, or off-road use?

What would matter most to you before considering one: comfort, weight, handling, range, serviceability, or something else?

For transparency, I work in the e-bike industry and am interested in the broader design trend.

Quiet Kat QKM1000 vs Velotric nomad 2x

I have a used quiet Kat QKM1000 that I could get for $1550 or a velotric nomad 2x for 1800. QK would need new rear brakes, brand new battery and tires. Nomad is essentially brand new. I know nothing about e-bikes and looking solely for a hunting setup. Most slick muddy crop fields with a few wooded trials. Not much rocky terrain in my area.

Bike purchase question Mid motor, belt drive, $3K?

I’m looking for a flat bar road e-bike, not a MTB or fat tire, just something to ride for fun and a bit of exercise.

Ideally I’d love to find, as the title says, a mid motor bike with a belt drive for around $3,000. I’m in the SF Bay Area and have a strong preference for buying at a local bike shop, not online.

I’m in no real hurry with Autumn and Winter coming in, so if there are interesting options expected in the next few months, that’s fine.

I’ve seen the Turbo Vado mentioned on here, but I looked at the Specialized site and can’t make heads or tails of their naming system - there are a dozen Turbo Vado variants, and most are well more than my paltry $3K budget.

Did I get unlucky? Or are Fiido bikes of poor quality?

Last Friday, I got my C11 Pro, I assembled it in about an hour, I think the front wheel installation was the most challenging, but the overall process went smoothly. After assembling the bike, I noticed that one of the break disc was misaligned and rubbing against a pad, so I fixed that. Then, I noticed that the gears weren't shifting. So I submitted a warranty claim to the shop I got the bicycle from and started using the bicycle riding only in 1st gear – not ideal, but better than nothing. Later that day, after about 6 km, the bicycle started to turn off on its own, making it unusable, especially at night as the nights shut off too. I've charged the batter, but the problem persists. I have requested an exchange, but I want to ask whether Fiido bicycles are this bad or whether it was just my ill luck.

Ramp for row house stoop

I just picked up my new (used) e-bike (a 2022 Gazelle Medeo T10+). I'm 65. I bought it as a way of staying active as I get older. I love it so far, for all of the two days I've had it.

The bike is close to 60 pounds. My old commuter, fully laden, was way lighter, by ten pounds or more. I live in a townhouse, with an unheated vestibule where the bike lives, just at the top of eight stairs, the last one (to get in the door) uneven.

Can someone recommend a foldable, portable ramp to get the bike in and out of the house?

Questions from a new e-bike owner.

I had a chance to buy an e-bike 13 years ago and I still regret I didn’t. Finally I own one. Went for my second ride today, over 17k. It was so amazing and I’m so happy! I’m looking forward to my next work day and taking a very long ride home (I work less then 1k from my house lol) and all the different places I can hit before getting home.

Few questions:

  1. what’s a good app for tracking your rides?

  2. A local bike shop told me about solar panels to charge the batteries, and I wanted to know is this actually feasible? (If so this is a long term goal.)

  3. What’s your fav biking accessories?

Bike repair question Tries Recommendation for Safeway Xafari

Bought my Xafari in July and ride commute about 26 miles round trip. I’m really happy with the bike and it’s exactly what I wanted

Except…. The tires are already bald after 1500 miles. They are supposed to be 26x3 tires. So I had a spare 45North 26x3 tire but when I put it on it’s too big! It rubs the rear fender

The Segway/Kenda tire is only $40 but it’s a pain in the A$$ to replace. My local bike shop dealer hates replacing them too in their rental fleet. They don’t have any other options or suggestions for a replacement that fits

Anyone here have any luck with a replacement tire other than the Segway/Kenda?

Thanks

Bike build question To hall or to not hall?

Diy bike thats as waterproof as tissue paper, rode in a storm and it was fine. cleaned it with a weak jet wash, bike just clicks in the hub when turned on and does not go. Controller case is still factory sealed and "waterproof" aka resistant, and was in its own plastic box not sprayed. Decided to see what would happen with the hall wires disconnected and it works fine now.

Do i bother to fix them or leave it sensorless?

Frustration with bike shop.

I was a long time acoustic bike enthusiast. I commuted on road bikes, fixed gears, and was a bike messenger for a short while before ebikes became the new craze. I was also a motorcyclist for some time as well until that got too pricey for me. So I know my way around 2 wheels. I wanted something that could bridge that gap, gimme a little exercise, and a little fun on my way to work while saving me gas money.

Now im 400 miles into owning an ebike and was really enjoying the experience

But now im fucking pissed.

A certain company that I wont name, but if youre in the ebike space, you'd know them. They specialize in refurbishing and reselling used ebikes.

I bought a Ristretto 512 A24 from them at a good bargain. The brand new MSRP was way out of my price range. It was a pipe dream to ever get to own one of them. I had done a lot of research on ebikes and found that this was one of the best performing and best looking ebikes on the market. I also liked that the company had a plethora of videos on their YouTube channel on how to maintain or repair their bikes.

I went personally to the bike refurbisher's showroom as it was a quick train ride from my house so I could test ride in store. To the shop's credit, the team was very very welcoming, very knowledgeable and worked with me. I test rode a bunch of bikes and eventually picked out the Ristretto since I saw they had it in stock.

Now here comes the problems.

The bike shop offered delivery via a third party courier service, which I took them up on. The way it works is you pick out a 2hr time slot in which the bike can be delivered to you in hand, and ready to ride.

The first attempt at delivery was unsuccessful, since there were no couriers available. The second attempt, same thing. I offered to pick up the bike in person, which they declined. I was refunded the cost of delivery ($99) and the bike was delivered after a 3rd attempt. I was back and forth with the company throughout each delivery attempt. While the delivery was kind of botched 3 times, I really appreciated their communication with me. This took about a whole week of back and forth.

After delivery, I noticed that the tires were dry rotted on the sidewalls. Kinda wish that were made known to me when I bought it, just so I know to replace them. I ended up ordering a set of tires from Ristretto (which they sold me at half cost) and they even threw in a set of free tubes as well. When told about my tires being messed up, the bike shop just told me to buy 24x4 tires online. Oh well, thats minor. I know how to change a tire and the Manufacturer cut me a great deal, even if the bike itself is WAY out of the Manufacturers warantee.

Otherwise, the bike served me real well for a month. I got a lot of miles on it and made sure to maintain drive chain and motorchain meticulously. (For those who dont know, the CYC Motor that is built into the bike has 2 chains on its mid drive motor. One that operates like a conventional bicycle chain, and the other is a heavy duty Go-Kart style chain that attaches the motor to the crank and provides the motor power when you pedal)

The other night, while riding home from a friend's birthday party, the motor failed catastrophically. The motor still spins and moves, but doesnt engage the motor chain at all.

While waiting for an Uber XXL to pick me and my bike up, I record a video of the motor failure to send to the bike shop since they advertise their 1 year warranty on their website pretty prominently. I wasnt a stranger to emailing their HelpDesk at all, which again, to their credit, didnt sound like an AI just answering emails. Im pretty sure I got a human being that emailed me back during their business hours.

Here's the thing, it's been 48 hours. No response at all from the helpdesk. Nothing. They went from constant and near instant communication over delivery of the bike, and even the issue of the dry rotted tires, to pretty much stone walling me. Are you kidding me, guys? If youre gonna advertise how good and seamless your service is, make sure it actually lives up to that.

Now my almost $2500 bike is sitting around the house with nowhere to go. Yeah, I could probably take the motor apart and fix it myself, theres actually a plethora of repair and maintenance tutorials on YouTube. I could even take it to one of the local bike/ebike shops in my area. But it shouldn't be my responsibility if the bike is brand spanking new from you guys!
