Heads Up: 1) Astroturf will be grounds for an immediate ban. 2) Open-source technology STRONGLY preferred.

If you:

  • try to perform market research on this sub without identifying yourself as doing so
  • promote your product (or your customer's product, no being a social media contractor or whatever for a company does not get you around the rules) without identifying yourself as doing so
  • generally dishonestly promote products

that behavior will be interpreted as a violation of rule 2 and grounds for an immediate ban. You will not receive a warning or a first strike. You are not clever. You are not fooling anyone. We do not care what norms you think you are following. If you are promoting a product or gathering research for a product you need to ID yourself as clearly doing so, how and why.

Additionally, this sub has a strong preference for open-source technology, especially in the age of AI generated software. If your product is open-source you will be given much more leeway with the rules here than if you are attempting to sell something closed-source, especially when it is obvious you generated software with AI and are then attempting to sell that as a product.

This will be your only warning; behave accordingly.

A specific example of Good e-Reader false information spreading across the Internet

Thumbnail
youtube.com
99 Upvotes

TLDR: they posted in their review of the Kindle Paperwhite 12th Gen and Colorsoft with some false facts, and those false facts spread to every corner of the Internet including Reddit, Discord, CNET, Wikipedia, and open source projects. (my video)

A lot of people seem to think that reviewers don't need to take a screenshot to check.

EDIT:

Made a Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlFC6jSwjRQ

In it, I

* show a video of me taking a screenshot on a kindle by tapping opposite corners and showing the USB screenshots folder

* Show the actual screenshots of the Paperwhite 12th Gen and Colorsoft with resolutions

* Show that Good e-Readers reviews of the Scribe 2025/Scribe Colorsoft made the same mistake by stating an incorrect resolution with screenshots, while also showing that other publications explicitly say that Amazon didn't provide an exact resolution

Personally, I think saying that 7” means 1264x1680 is a leap. I never assume the inch number is exact, you need to verify the exact resolution yourself. Amazon could get a custom panel size anytime like this case.

1264x1680 is 7.008” anyways. But 1260x1680 would be exactly 7"

Looking for a new device, in need of advice

• Upvotes

I'm looking for an e-ink reader to replace my ageing reMarkable, and I'd love to hear your recommendations. I'm particularly interested in open-source-friendly devices that support KOReader and can handle EPUB, TXT, and PDF files.

I have two main requirements:

  1. Reading, highlighting, and exporting notes: I want to highlight passages, add short annotations, and easily retrieve all my highlights and notes in a well-organized, exportable format. My old Kindle Touch did this really well by saving everything in a single My Clippings.txt file. I'd love to have a similar workflow, ideally without being tied to a proprietary ecosystem.
  2. Sharing annotated texts: I also need to be able to export the complete document with my highlights and comments embedded or otherwise clearly associated with the relevant passages, so I can send annotated versions of my students' texts back to them. It's important that they can open the files on their own devices and see both the highlights and my comments, ideally without having to use the same software or device.

I've been looking at Kobo devices running KOReader, but I'm open to other options, including PocketBook or anything else that fits these requirements.

What devices and workflows would you recommend? In particular, I'd love to hear from people who have actually tested exporting and sharing annotated PDFs or EPUBs, rather than just exporting a separate list of highlights.

PLS HELP: Looking for factory config dump of Good Display DMN036EW (3.6" Spectra 6 NFC badge)

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi!
Does anyone own a Good Display DMN036EW (3.6" 6-color E Ink Spectra 6 NFC badge, 400x600, FMSC chip) that still has its original factory configuration?

Mine was accidentally overwritten by the NFC-D3-Pro app. Since then the official NTAG app only shows the bottom quarter of the image (only the last of the 4 image slots ends up on the panel), the rest is noise.

I rebuilt most of the config myself, and with the help of my FlipperZero I could reconstuct some of it but still have some importent missing parts.... the original factory settings are missing so i cant write correctly to it.

What I need is a read-out of an original badge:
- the response to the APDU 00D1000000 (ISO 14443-4A)
- if possible, a sniff of the screen config (F0DB / F0DA commands) You can read it with a Flipper Zero (NFC APDU Runner), an Android phone (e.g. NFC Tools > Advanced NFC commands) or a PC/SC reader.

PS: Reading 00D1 does NOT change anything on the badge.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Finally got my whole library seamless across 5 devices with BookOrbit + KOReader, and I'm a little in love

I've been chasing a cross-device reading setup for years and I think I finally have it. Wanted to share because the BookOrbit + KOReader combo doesn't get talked about enough.

Setup: BookOrbit self-hosted on my Linux box at home, reachable over Tailscale so nothing is exposed to the internet. KOReader on every device with the BookOrbit plugin signed in. That's it.

Devices it's running on right now:

- Boox Note Max (my main reader for PDFs and big-page stuff)

- Boox Go Color 7 II

- Kobo Libra Colour (KOReader sideloaded with NickelMenu)

- Galaxy Tab S9

- Galaxy S24 Ultra

(Not all pictured here )

How it actually works day to day: I open a book on whatever is closest. Progress, highlights and bookmarks go up to BookOrbit and come down on the next device. The library itself lives in one place with proper covers and metadata, so I browse one shelf instead of five half-synced folders. BookOrbit also pushes highlights to Readwise for me, so my notes end up where I review them without doing anything.

The part I didn't expect was how nice the library looks. I spent a weekend cleaning up metadata and covers once, and now every device shows the same beautiful shelf. Browsing my own collection is pleasant in a way it never was with folders over USB.

Small tip for Kobo people: I run Tailscale on the Kobo through the koreader-tailscale plugin in userspace mode, and I had to set KOReader's HTTP proxy to the plugin's local proxy by hand (Network menu, long-press HTTP proxy). After that, sign-in just works.

The one thing I wish worked: writing. Handwriting annotations on epub doesn't work on Koreader on the Note Max or Go. I'd love for scribbles and margin notes to travel with the book the same way highlights do, or at least show up read-only on the other devices. If anyone has cracked that, I'm all ears.

Still, this is the first time all my devices feel like one library instead of a pile of gadgets. Highly recommend if you've got more than one reader and don't mind running a small server.

Pocketbook Inkpad One or Supernote Nomad?

I’ve been researching which e-ink device to get and I’ve narrowed it down to these two.

The biggest pro for Supernote Nomad for me is the fact that the pen is designed to never have to be replaced, it’s ceramic it doesn’t get worn down you don’t have to buy more nibs. Other than that I do like what I’ve seen of the Pocketbook’s features specifically the speech-to-text. It can play music too? I don’t know if Supernote has audio capabilities like that but it’s a really huge bonus for me.

The main thing I’ll be using it for is reading e-books and annotating and making notes as a college student with a lot of readings (literature major)

Does anyone who has experience with either of these two devices wanna let me know what they think?

I built a free, open-source tool that prints you a morning newspaper on your e-reader (Kindle first, Kobo/reMarkable testers wanted)

Dev here, so take this as a self-post with a disclosure.

Deckle started as a fix for a Kindle annoyance: sideloaded EPUBs are second-class books. Send to Kindle drops Enhanced Typesetting, X-Ray and Word Wise, and the calibre tricks that bring each one back conflict with each other. Deckle does all of it in one pipeline over USB: real KFX, a cover that actually shows, page numbers, X-Ray, Word Wise.

Then it grew a second thing, and that’s the part I think this sub will like: it prints you a morning paper. Every night your machine builds an edition from your town’s weather, local news, your RSS feeds and the articles you saved during the day, with a generated front page as the cover. It delivers when the reader connects. Current pages include:

  • Weather and almanac strip: sunrise, sunset, first frost, moon, meteor showers
  • Local news, with extra towns if you want (a relative’s, a vacation spot)
  • A puzzle page: a 5×5 mini crossword themed on yesterday’s headlines, a word ladder, yesterday’s answers
  • “From Your Shelf”: the books you’re mid-way through and the words you looked up this week, read off the device
  • A searchable archive of every edition as plain files

The whole thing runs locally. No account, no subscription, no telemetry. GPL-3.0, written in Rust. macOS 14+ and Windows 11 right now, no Linux build yet.

Where it stands: Kindle Scribe 2024 and Paperwhite are verified on real hardware. Kobo (KEPUB), PocketBook (EPUB), reMarkable (a PDF laid out for the screen, pushed over the USB web UI), and plain EPUB/PDF export to a folder for iPad or Boox are all implemented but not yet confirmed on real devices. If you own one of those and want a newspaper on it, I’d love a bug report with model and firmware.

Let’s Build an opencode kaleido4 10’3 color pad?

I’ve been looking for a better option for my kid, since regular learning tablets really strain young eyes. Recently I found the Kaleido 4 — a 10.3" color e‑ink display with much improved refresh rates. I’m thinking of turning it into a custom learning machine for my little one, and plan to open‑source the whole project. Anyone here interested?

Question about hibreak S

Recently I found an awesome deal on the bigme hibreak S, around 800 reais (160usd), already with taxes, but, it’s the 4gb ram one, idc about being 64gb internal storage because it is expandable anyway.

my primary use is based on the following:

- reading

- garmin live track

- maintaining my homelab with codex and acessing my services thru the phone, also checking my Mac screen with RustDesk and a-shell

- messaging and WhatsApp

- find me similar (maybe Google Maps or some other map, I’m a road cyclist so this is a must)

- banking

- duolingo

- mail and Wikipedia (self educate bOyz)

would I find any trouble with, maybe, not enough ram?

The Review of Bigme B6 Pro Color - The fastest e-reader I have ever used

Thumbnail

This video is my review of the fastest e-Reader I have ever used, the Bigme B6 Pro color. It’s a Kaleido 3 color e-ink e-Reader with a 6-inch screen. Perfect size as an e-Reader. You can scroll in upto 75 fps or so. You can basically do everything you do on a normal smartphone on it. Even make and take calls and send SMS. It’s maybe even too powerful because of that. It’s too easy to do other stuff than reading. The stylus works for simple note taking. Needs to be charged though. And there is no lag while writing because the Bigme B6 Pro is so fast. But for serious note taking I recommend other devices that are made for it. And in black and white. Batterylife is quite terrible though because you usually use it for other stuff in high speeds.

Live clock

I’m looking to get a TRMNL but having a live clock will be important for my use case. I read that you can only refresh the screen at most every 5 minutes, is that right?
Am I better off trying to build a DIY eink device myself?

I made a tool that turns email newsletters into EPUBs for e-ink readers. Looking for feedback before I host it

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I read most long-form stuff on e-ink, but newsletters were stuck in my inbox. So I built Readferry: you point newsletters at a private address, and each issue is cleaned up (trackers, share buttons and footers removed), turned into an EPUB with a table of contents, and delivered by email (Kindle, PocketBook) or through a private OPDS catalog (KOReader, Boox, Kobo with KOReader). There's also an optional weekly digest.

The demo is the real app running on my laptop; it isn't public yet. The narration is text-to-speech. Before I pay for hosting, I want to know whether anyone would use it: https://forms.gle/TDaVDvczPA3eidox8

What would make this useful on your device? I'll be here answering questions.

Disclosure: I'm the developer.

🦇 Grimoire 🦇 v1.1b - Now with KoReader and Spanish support!

Thumbnail
gallery
19 Upvotes

https://github.com/ganten1998/grimoire-scribe/releases/tag/v1.1.0-beta.2

(Edited to add beta.2 containing quick fixes which include, hopefully, a hardening of the KoReader implementations)

Was recommended to post this here, and what follows after this paragraph is mostly a crosspost. I have owned a Kindle Scribe since whenever the first one came out up to now, and I rock the 2024 Jade Edition. I have always loved the idea of it, but I found it frustrating that so little effort had been put in on the note-taking experience. Where are the extra tools? Where are the customization options of those tools? Why must I e-mail myself a page? Why is it not generally appealing to look at? I posted not too long ago on r/kindlescribe and r/kindlejailbreak and got better feedback than I expected. Now I have implemented almost all of it and am thinking bigger picture now. Please consider trying it if you have a jailbroken Scribe and I am open to all feature requests.

Here is a list of what's new:

User Feedback Patches:

mkNucleus - QR code on the webview - Done!

Ruano212 - Device pin fix - Done!

Expensive-Zebra6906 - Spanish support and white pen - Done!

BooferBadz - Does this work in KoReader? - Yes, it does!

scamdotnet - Customize sidebar - Pens can now be pinned to the sidebar, Done!

maquis_00 - Custom Templates - Done!

Other features:

  • Pen feel > Eraser: Precise erases only what it touches. The paper's lines always stay.
  • Pages you already have: a folder of page pictures (a PDF saved as images) in grimoire/import/ becomes a notebook.

Much love,

Ganten

I took apart a Joan 13 so you don’t have to

Thumbnail
gallery
28 Upvotes

Got a malfunctioning Joan 13 from my work. It’s a nice large panel so I set about learning what’s inside and maybe someday being able to fix it or repurpose the panel.

Sadly, I didn’t clean off the adhesive holding the front glass off well enough and had smudged some onto the panel, sticking it to the frame, so when I went to lift the panel out oh so gently to discover how its FPC is connected… crack! NOOOoOooooo

Oh well. There’s like zero info online about these so I figured I post these pics.

To get the front glass off, I used a food warming mat set to “medium” (176f / 80c) and set the aluminum frame on it (with the magnet back removed). Then just kept trying to slice/separate the glue around the frame until victory.

I made a daily art display (GitHub > ESP32 > Spectra6 13")

Thumbnail
gallery
117 Upvotes

Just sharing my project here since this subreddit is where I got a lot of inspiration from.

It's an ESP32 that downloads artwork from GitHub and shows it on a 13.3" Spectra 6 panel. It runs on a battery and wakes up once every morning to update the display.

I know now that AI has made code generation cheap and easy we are seeing a lot of these types of projects these days, and mine is a product of that, but I think one element that makes mine unique is that it uses GitHub itself to store the images. Sort of like a free cloud sync. This is nice because it means you can update the artwork whenever you want without touching the code on the display.

You could actually store the images on any basic HTTP static source. Or even a private source like a private GitHub repo, if you specify an auth token.

It uses an Adafruit Feather ESP32-C6 and a Pimoroni Inky Impression 13.3".

More details on GitHub here or you can see a video here on insta.

Thanks for sharing all your projects 🙂
