Unsolved Medium This collection has a bunch of elderly women, often in love with the romantic lead, settings ranging from a Ruritania to Italy to Mount Olympus to an English courtroom, and to properly experience them, you need 14 other books, the materials for one of which is lost!
And, technically, it's not even complete. But you'd need to be a super fan to know that.

Solved Another book named after a book within it. It's an instruction book! Also, can astronomical phenomena be friend shaped? Turns out, yes.
I think this one is fairly easy. It's at least way better known than some of the stuff I've posted. Same decade as the other book-named-after-a-fictional-book, though I think this one's remained a lot more popular.

Unsolved Medium The pure and kind destined child is safe with her found family of a regiment of rogues and villains in the Dark Lord's army. They're getting better. Sort of. Like, they want to be better. Still pretty evil though.

Solved The title of the book is also the title of the book the main character wrote in it, which got renamed by his publisher. There's pros and cons. Mostly the one big con, though.
I am far too proud of this one.
Couple hints: The book is renamed by the publisher in the novel itself.
Think of another meaning of con. No, not that one. Keep going. You'll almost certainly know this meaning, you probably just haven't thought of it.
The book is set in the then-present day and is a relatively realistic comedy mystery. The book is hard science fiction. The author is embarrassed to have his book renamed by the publisher. The author chose to name her book that. The author who gets killed just hates his book.
It has a sequel, with an equally strange and non-indicative title.

Solved A noblewoman cheats on her husband, has sex with a commoner, conceives his child, then her husband refuses to divorce her. Tom Lehrer was a devout fan of this book.

Solved In answer to the question in the title of the play, the wife is. She says so.
Hints:
It's a fairly famous play. Not recent. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that if you've heard of the author, it's probably going to be because of this play, though it's not like other things he wrote haven't also won major awards.
