💬Discussion Alex Ferguson has warped the long history of Manchester Utd. Before Alex Ferguson, Utd had 7 league titles and he ended a 26 year drought. This is their norm. Fergie was their lightning in a bottle.

Ferguson was incredible, and Utd are just above average without him. He won THIRTEEN of their 20 titles.

Before he arrived....

Liverpool - 18
Arsenal - 10
Everton - 9
Villa - 7
Sunderland - 6

The guy made 2+ generations of people forget that Utd were not anywhere near the powerhouse they were in his time...before he arrived.

The last 13 years are no different to the 26 years they suffered before his arrival.

EDIT - 12 years before Fergie arrived, Utd got relegated. The truth hurts, UTD fans. But it is the truth.

💬Discussion Judging a player based off his world cup campaign makes ZERO sense

• Upvotes

I get the importance of the world, a player having a good or bad campaign shouldn't soley be decided by their world cup campaign. It's a TEN MONTHS long season and that should be the major factor on deciding award during the world cup. Unai simon won best goalkeeper and that makes no sense considering he's not even top 5 this season. Sure he had a good world cup; didn't really do much bcoz spain had a tight defense. That's not to take anything away from him bcoz he clearly played an important role too nonetheless.

It's just unfair to other gk who don't get the acknowledgment bcoz they don't play for a team like spain

Same thing in 2018? when Modric won. That's just my option. Maybe i’m missing a point. Lmk

Major title winning managers per club. I noticed Man Utd are strangely low on the list

I've crunched the numbers and discovered that in the post-war period the number of managers per English club who have won either the league title or European Cup is as follows:

7 Liverpool
6 Chelsea
5 Arsenal
4 Man City
2 Villa, Everton, Man Utd, Spurs

And across Europe it is:

21 Bayern
18 Real Madrid
14 Barca
11 Milan

One conclusion that can be drawn from this is that for all of Man Utd's might as a super club, their entire postwar success is thanks to two (incredible) managers. The same number as Villa, Everton and Spurs.
Without them they're nothing, which speaks to a real problem of being unable to withstand the loss of key personnel. This isn't a new problem for them, they struggled post-Busby and they're now struggling post-Ferguson.
Ferguson was so gifted that he made them Britains biggest club, but on this metric perhaps we should actually be thinking of them as just another Spurs...

💬Discussion How many goals will we see in El Clásico tonight — and who scores more?

The last 10 Clásicos have produced 46 goals. That’s 4.6 per game.

9/10 had at least 3 goals

Both teams scored in 8/10

Barcelona won 6, Real Madrid won 4

No draws

Real Madrid kept 0 clean sheets

Barcelona kept only 2

The attacking numbers are close too:

Barcelona: 15.7 shots | 6.9 on target per game

Real Madrid: 14.0 shots | 6.4 on target per game

So let’s make it simple before kick-off:

How many total goals tonight?

And who scores more — Barcelona or Real Madrid?

explanation for support principle in attack

I’m studying the principles of attack (penetration, support, width, mobility, improvisation) and I’m trying to understand “support” properly.

My understanding: support means the player with the ball always has teammates in positions to receive a pass (beside, ahead, or behind him as a safe outlet). Without it, he’s left with only dribbling past the defender or shooting, which are both riskier. I also think support is what makes penetration possible, because it keeps the ball while width and movement create gaps.

Two questions:

  1. Is that right, or am I missing something? For example, do decoy runs count as support, or are they a separate idea (mobility)?
  2. Do you have a simple example from a real match or a training drill that shows good support versus bad support?

Thanks!

💬Discussion Why is England so focused on the “Premier League” instead of just the “English League”?

In any other country, nobody cares about what the league is called. It’s just the country’s top league and who became champions, but in England, everyone only cares about what specifically happened in the time it has been called Premier League. The first time I’ve ever seen people say anything else was when Liverpool won their 20th league title, but any other occasion, it’s Premier League exclusively. Liverpool’s 19th league title was spoken about as if it was their first league title ever. For a country so keen on its history, it’s very interesting to just wipe everything before 1992 off the planet. Nobody would ever correct

Don’t get me wrong, other countries also don’t know their champions of 1963, but we don’t just erase that history. I mean, try telling anybody Real Madrid only won 9 “Champions Leagues” and see who takes you seriously.

Was there a massive change in 1992 that explains why the ‘90 season is so different from ‘92?

Infantino says the majority of football supports him

In a rare BBC sport interview embattled Fifa president Gianni Infantino has laughed off suggestions hes under pressure by saying the 'vast majority of football' supports him. Following the World cup sell off debacle which saw support for Infantino split among national federations, and multiple prominent figures calling for his resignation.

Last week UEFA demanded Fifa release all documents relating to FFE (the proposed sell off) by November 2nd, UEFA secretary General Theodore Theodoridis stated that the organisation had failed to address "a number of fundamental questions".

Infantino has recently been travelling the world to shore up support as he seeks re-election for a fourth term starting in 2027. He also proposed to increase the amount of money handed out for football development across the world by $3.4bn.

💬Discussion We need to rethink penalty kicks

If a defender commits a foul at the corner of the penalty area, while the attacking player has their back to the goal, or there's a ton of other players around, and there's no obvious goal scoring opportunity - why hand out a free goal? Seems highly excessive, particularly if the defender is making an honest attempt at the ball. Especially when vast majority of penalty kicks result in a goal being scored.

I think a foul in the box should always be penalized with a yellow card. But it should not always result in a penalty kick, unless the attacking player has an obvious goal scoring opportunity which is stopped by the foul.

📖Read In 1940s, Bayern Munich’s captain Conny Heidkamp and his wife secretly hid the club’s trophies to protect them from the war. (read post body)

During the 1940s, Hermann Göring, a powerful leader of Nazi Germany urged German football clubs to surrender their trophies which should be melted for use during the war. Although a many German clubs gave in to this appeal, FC Bayern Munich did not lose their trophies.

As soon as the Allies started to bomb Munich in 1942, Bayern Munich trophies became threatened once more.

It is then that Mrs Magdalena Heidkamp, who was married to Bayern Munich team captain Conny Heidkamp, came up with an idea.

Thinking about the farm in Ascholding that she used to vacation at when young, she contacted the owner of the farm and arranged for trophies to be placed in boxes and carried by a wood-gas engine car. The trophies were kept in a room near stables to avoid any bombings.

With the approaching American forces in spring 1945, the couple thought that there was a possibility of stealing the trophies as mementos. Therefore they buried their treasures again.

Many of the Bayern Munich trophies were thus saved.

How important is muscle mass and physical build in football at the highest level?

It might sound silly but I’m curious about how much physical attributes can limit a player’s potential, even if they have very good technique. The reason why I ask is because I’ve only ever seen a few pro football players who are very thin and have an obvious ectomorphic build - the rest are either mesomorphic or a combination of ecto and meso but not pure ecto.

For example, if someone is naturally small-framed, struggles to put on muscle and has low bone density, could those factors significantly reduce their chances of reaching a professional or elite level, even if their ball control, passing and dribbling are excellent?

I understand that strength, speed, stamina and tactical awareness all matter, and that smaller players can succeed at the highest level. But is there a point where the physical demands of elite football become too much of a disadvantage to overcome through technique and football intelligence?

I’d be interested to hear from people with experience in competitive football, coaching or player development.

Be brutally honest when answering
