Help! 4 cats at Minneapolis Animal Care and Control (MACC) need foster placement by Thursday 10/29, or will be euthanized

There are rescues from all over the state that pull from MACC, so if you live anywhere in Minnesota, you can help if you want to! If you want to help contact one of the MACC approved rescues (here's a list of all the approved rescues: https://www.minneapolismn.gov/resident-services/animals-pets/animal-rescue/animal-rescue-groups/) and tell them you want to foster one of the cats who's on the euthanasia list at MACC. Rescues I would recommend because they frequently take Minneapolis Animal Control cats are: Pet Haven, Ruff Start, Twin Cities Pet Rescue, Kitty Revolution, and The Rescue Crew.

fostering to adopt a kitty and i’m not sure if i should keep her because i recently found out about some medical issues

i (22f) am fostering a 2m3w kitten. when i went to the shelter to pick out a cat on october 1st, they originally had me adopt her and take her home same day. she was recently spayed so she still had a cone on and because of this she wasn’t really able to groom herself. so when i would take the cone off for some play time, she’d usually groom like crazy and i’d keep an eye on her to make sure she wasn’t getting at her incision. but she was also itching her ears a lot and even with the cone on she’d try to scratch her ears. this is when i went into her medical records and say she had ottomax prescribed to her but the shelter did not tell me this or send me home with any medications. she was also supposed to be on a dewormer that they also did not give to me. so i contacted the shelter and they switched me to foster to adopt and gave me all her medications to continue. the switch to foster was so that they could pay for any medical expenses until she was better. i noticed a couple more things that seemed to be wrong with her: one of her eyes was cloudy and she had a weird wobble in her back legs when she walked. oh and she also had fleas!! i notified the shelter of these issues as well, and it took them a couple visits for them to do an xray and to prescribe an eye lubricant. the first time i told them about the eye they said it was likely an injury from when she was littler and it might go away. and when i mentioned the wobble, again, they told me to come back in when the vet was there. so at that last visit with the vet, they did the xray and tested for felv because of the eye (thankfully negative). for the eye they said it was “Symblepharon on left eye with aqueous flare. Left cornea appears dry. Possibly related to previous herpes infection. Vision intact, PLR normal.” they said i may have to give her the eye lubricant for the rest of her life. and in the xray they found she has shallow hip sockets and arthritis may develop early in life (hip dysplasia).

so this is when i get frustrated because not only had i told the shelter about these issues multiple times, but they would have me come in without a vet being there, and then tell me to come back when there was one there. and she had the cloudy eye from the beginning so i’m like was no one looking into that before i was allowed to adopt her that same day??

anyways… now im considering putting her back up for adoption and continuing to foster her until she finds a new home. the shelter is giving me until this friday to decide. im considering this since i am about to graduate from university this spring and looking into grad schools. i dont know where i will end up or what my financial situation will be. i understand that the chance of a major surgery is very low and would be a while from now, and i understand that any cat i could adopt could have any sort of health issues later down the road. just because i dont know what my future holds, it’s hard to handle also not knowing what her future will hold either because of these issues. this is devastating for me because i love her so much and we have really bonded over this past month. i feel like ive nursed her back to health and she feels like my baby. that being said, i feel like i should give her the best chance at life by finding someone else who is more apt to taking care of a cat with life long medical issues and who knows they can make accommodations for her as they are needed later in her life. another part of me feels like i feasibly could take care of her and give her the best life possible, but it would be a lot of added stress.

all that being said… what do i do??

TLDR: i am fostering to adopt a kitten and recently found out she has hip dysplasia and symblepharon. she might need eye lubricant for the rest of her life and is likely to develop early arthritis with low chances of major surgeries later in life. i’m not sure if i am the best person to be taking care of her because i am looking for grad schools and don’t know where i will end up or how my financial situation will be. i know she would find a different home with someone who loves her just as much, but she is my baby and it’s difficult to make this decision.

5 week old kittens not pooping !

This is my first time fostering kittens and I just started to wean them this past week when they were 4 1/2 weeks old by mixing some wet food into their formula. They began pooping by themselves on Friday and on Saturday they turned 5 weeks old. Today (Sunday night) I noticed that they have still not pooped again. They've been acting completely normal playing with each other and asking for food but I'm worried since it has been two days already that they're constipated. I've tried stimulating them but nothing comes out and I tried the triangle method but I feel like I'm not doing it right and my kitten keeps wiggling out. I would appreciate any help or advice!

Foster Kitten - foster fail and attachment

Post image

Hey Reddit team. How are you all going? I was wondering how does everyone manage attachment to foster babies or deciding if a foster fail has occured?

I have my first foster ever who is 4 months. My plan was not to adopt due to health, but this little treasure, is the light of my life.

She is 4 months so after a bit of research while she is attached to me, I hope she could still attach to a new human with no trauma from my return of her.

Here she for kitten tax. How do you manage it? Thank you in advance

Backyard kittens not gaining weight

Post image
29 Upvotes

So two weeks ago I found 4 kittens in my backyard. I snatched them in hopes they'd have a better life than being feral like their mother (I've been trying to catch her since February)

I've had them on the goats milk kitten milk replacement and now shifted to the KMR milk and baby pate mix (they are finally learning how to eat from a dish and pooping on their own (that was a rough week of helping them poop)

No one has diarrhea, pumpkin puree and the vet hospital gave me antibiotics and prebiotics

They are happy and lively and playful. BUT THEY ARENT GAINING WEIGHT!

I read that deworming them could be the solution but I also did heavy research on that whole topic and only a vet can give them dewormer because they are so small?

Any suggestions for food? High calorie gel? Am I adding too much water to their bottle? (They haven't figured out a water bowl yet)

I really want them to be healthy and get bigger. Should I do smaller meals and more frequently? HELP!

Constantly crying feral baby

I’m no stranger to fostering, but I’m out of ideas to help reduce the behavior of one of my current fosters and help him be less unhappy.

I’m currently on day 3 of working to socialize a pair of 12 week old feral kittens. They are used to people feeding them, so they are the LEAST spicy babies I’ve ever encountered who are genuinely feral. They are very afraid of me as expected, but my churu-dispensing fingers are quite the hit. They’re also showing some interest in play. Appetites are great. They’ve been dewormed and fleas removed. Using the litterbox well after initial confusion (seeing a turd neatly placed in the food bowl was novel).

However, one of them cries almost all of the time-those loud, piercing, “come save me!” cries. We’re working on trapping the last kitten in the litter still, so it may be that he misses his buddy. They have multiple toys, two mini-cat trees, a box, bedding, and I’m in there frequently feeding them. I had to remove the cardboard scratchers because both are convinced that’s where you’re supposed to poop. I tried a radio with white noise and calm talking-still cries. He cries more when I’m gone but still cries when I’m in there. I’d like to find some way to make this little guy a bit less distressed. Cat tax included.

Tiny Injured Kitten Needs a Chance to Heal

A tiny kitten, only two months old, is fighting to recover.

Last night, I shared the story of this little kitten who was injured and in pain. It breaks my heart to see such a tiny life suffering.

The kitten has received pain medication and must rest strictly while recovering. Right now, all I want is for this little one to heal and feel safe.

I rescue stray cats in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina. I take them off the streets, find foster homes when possible, and try to give each one a chance at a better life. My dream is to build a shelter where abandoned and injured cats can receive the care and protection they desperately need.

Every little life matters, and even the smallest act of kindness can make a difference.

Thank you for caring about this little soul. ❤️

From the day I found them, when they were just one day old, to the little kittens they are today. ❤️

They were so tiny and fragile, completely dependent on care and love. Watching them grow has been such a beautiful journey. Every day, they became a little stronger, and every day reminded me why rescuing animals matters so much.

They were given a chance at life, and I’m grateful I could be there for them. 🐾

Marysia is missing part of her tail. Apparently the remaining fluff has been working overtime.

Look at that collar. That is a cat dressed for an event none of us were invited to.

This is Marysia, one of the cats at Khvostyky, our rescue cat café in Vinnytsia, Ukraine.

She’s missing part of her tail, but it doesn’t stop her enjoying life. And she has enough magnificent fur to make us feel underdressed in our own workplace.

The first photo looks like we’ve interrupted her on the way to the opera. Probably to ask something embarrassing, like whether she wants dinner.

We wanted you to meet her. She deserves an audience ❤️

More of Marysia and our other residents on Instagram, "@catcafe.me.rescue".

Advice on the benefits of moving a shy & timid 9 month old kitten

Hello, I've gotten a lot of help from this subreddit before with my foster kittens, so I am coming back to ask for your advice.

I am currently fostering a beautiful, black, 9-month-old timid kitten named Bunny. I first took her in when she was 8 weeks old, and was very fearful and spicy. After a month of working closely with her, I was able to turn her around, and she seemed to be adjusting well to home life.

We are a foster-based rescue but do work with a humane society that, from time to time, will take our kittens for adoption. They had an opening, so we sent Bunny. She did not do well in their kitten room and became very fearful and even more timid. After about three months, I convinced my rescue that we needed to pull her, and she came back home to me. She was really shut down, and it's taken her a couple of months to feel comfortable again. She finally left her safe room a few weeks ago and is now comfortable in all parts of the house, plus she is enjoying playing with my 2-year-old foster cat. Each week I see a new level of confidence in her. She hasn't warmed up to my husband but is slowly getting used to him. She is very affectionate with me and seeks me out for cuddles. She hides when someone new comes into our home, so she has a long way to go.

The issue is that now my rescue wants to move her to a house that has more activity and possibly children so she can be exposed and hopefully widen her opportunities for adoption. My house is very quiet.

I feel responsible for putting her in a situation where she didn't do well, so now I want to make sure moving her is the best thing for her. There hasn't been much interest in her, so of course I'd like to do whatever I can to get her adopted. I don't want to set her back again, especially when she's doing well.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of kitten and situation? Did moving it around help them become more socialized? If you know of any articles that talk specifically about moving timid kittens, that would be great too.

Thanks much.

tldr: 9-month-old timid kitten doing well in my quiet home, but rescue wants to move her to expose her to more things.
