Campus Life 📍 We Need Better Career Fairs.
Has anyone else noticed that the career fairs that GCU hosts are extremely infrequent, low quality, barely any companies show up, and the ones that do are low quality companies or lowkey pyramid schemes?
As annoying as career fairs are they are still one of the only reliable ways to get a job after college. The school definitely knows this, so I don’t know why they aren’t a bigger part. I get that like 70% of the student body is freshmen, but upperclassmen exist too and the closer I get to graduating the more I’m freaking out that I won’t be able to find a job. I’ve applied to over 100 companies on LinkedIn and have not even gotten a single rejection email.
Before someone says it, I already work for GCE. That’s the only reliable thing career services was able to do for me. But that job is finite, pays horribly, and I’ve completely outgrown the role. The GCE job is not just some office assistant or receptionist role either, it’s producing real visible work with numbers I can show employers. Yet even with over a year of experience in that role, I still can’t get noticed in this job market.
Anyone else close to graduation have any suggestions?
Also any freshmen/sophomores reading this it’s genuinely up to you to change this, because if nothing is done this will get worse and it’ll be even harder to find a job after school. Start asking the school for more career development events. It’s too late for me but it doesn’t have to be for everyone.
