Custom water cooling gone wrong
I bought a buddy of mine a 34” 1440p 200hz monitor for his birthday. He’s always ran an old office 1080p 60hz 23” monitor, so the cooling system never showed its weakness due to its low utilization. His specs are a Ryzen 9900x and a RTX 4070 on 128gb of ddr5.
He’s always struggled in games because he’s not able to see all that well so I decided to get him a new monitor for his birthday and he absolutely loves it. However, given that his hardware has to work harder, I assumed that the weaknesses would show, but I didn’t know how bad the cooling loop really was.
His 4070 was thermal throttling in most games and the pics will likely show why.
Long story short, he threw away the original fan shroud and screws for his 4070 but kept the heatsink. So to put a bandaid on his gpu, we found some screws from an old motherboard threaded into the gpus heatsink, and we were able to repaste and mount the heatsink and zip tie some noctua fans. Just so he can buy some time for a proper waterblock. The current waterblock that was used didn’t even have the correct bolt pattern so he only had 2 screws securing the block to the gpu die, and there was no cooling for his vram or his vrm.
