Housing / Living Is it ok in Finland? Dog owners regularly let their dogs urinate on the others building's plinth

Post image
0 Upvotes

I moved recently to Helsinki, and faced the problem of some dog owners letting their loved ones to pee right under my windows. I even asked the landlord to attach signs not to do so but all the signs are ignored, they keep doing it no matter what. I cannot even open the windows in my apartment because of the dog urine smell. And it is not only under my apartment windows, dark marks on the plinths everywhere in our neighbourhood (Jätkäsaari). Now I am wondering is it acceptable in Finland?

I found that under the Public Order Act (612/2003, section 14) of Finland, dog owners must not let their dogs foul maintained residential areas. So why do they do it? I once reported this issue to City of Helsinki environmental health unit and they accepted this is a problem to be solved. But they cannot force dog owners not to do it right? Or maybe can I take photos of these dog owners who do it and report to police to stop this? I am really tired of this mess. I wonder why they do not let them urinate uder their own doors or buildings but they go to others buildings and do it.

I love dogs and not against them, but imagine letting the dog pee right next to the building entrance. Are they so lazy and do not care about others or it is really ok here? The strong smell and this urine attracts insects and flies, dog foulings and flies can spread some infections, kids and toddlers may touch these areas easily.

Question Can anyone recommend good physiotherapists in Helsinki area?

My wife has been suffering a number of issues over the years, largely related to her hips and back. Lately she's been diagnosed also with possible Trigeminal neuralgia as well, probably caused by excessive stress. She says her entire head down to her toes cramps up, her body aches all over, its difficult for her to walk. She gets dizzy, she's tired and repeated visits to Doctors and random physiotherapists has not helped long term. She definitely gets better in the short term after phyiso sessions, but it doesn't last for long and the gaps between sessions are often months.

She need some long term help from one person who can understand her condition and help her through it, and can communicate with reliably. I'm getting a bit desperate as she's in such a depressed state lately, feeling no one can help her, so I'm just trying to do my bit and see if there's someone I can reach out to. I don't mind if its on the pricier side. Thanks in advance :)

Discussion Small food creator in Helsinki: platforms or pitch restaurants myself?

I post food stuff on Instagram and TikTok, around 2k followers. I want to start doing actual collabs with restaurants but I’m not sure how to go about it.

Option one is joining a platform. I’ve looked at Promobeez and Vaiku. Collabs come to you, which sounds easy, but I don’t know if it’s worth it at my size or if the deals are any good.

Option two is just messaging restaurants myself. Feels more flexible, but I have no idea who to contact or how not to come across as someone begging for free food.

If you’ve done either, what worked? And if you pitch directly, how do you find places? Instagram DMs, email, walking in?

Honest answers please, including “don’t bother.”

Question Piano lessons?

Hi!
I want to know if there’s such a thing as private piano lesson for a specific song?

I used to learn it as a child but I don’t remember much apart from the C major keys(?)

I’m not trying to learn how to play everything. I’m wanting to learn only one specific song. I would love to sing and play piano for that song as accompaniment.

I’m a 21 yo student so I don’t have much money for lessons but are there any suggestions?

EDIT : i know the song. It’s Slipping through the fingers by ABBA. I wanted to say I used to learn piano as a child and I currently know how to play chords in C major scale 😭

Question Can you bring me something to Helsinki airport on Monday, 26.10. from Helsinki city center?

Hello everyone!

I am dreaming of having a Korvapuusti (cinnamon bun) from Rams Roasters in Helsinki.

I will be at the airport on Monday, 26.10. but won’t be able to travel to the city center due to a medical condition.

Is anyone near the cafe (Rams Roasters) and is heading to the airport on Monday?

If yes: would you be willing to bring me one of their Korvapuusti?

I will be there (outside of the airport) from 14.00 to 16.00.

It would mean A LOT to me.

Work & Education How do you all keep up with fresh job listings here? I ended up writing a Telegram bot for my friends

Hello everyone. I and a few friends of mine who moved to Helsinki struggled to find a job here. Many of them required Finnish or were gone before we could even see them.

The good ones in Helsinki get 100+ applicants, and by day three it is basically over. They checked Duunitori a couple of times a week and still missed the fresh stuff, which was a little frustrating to watch.

In my opinion, the fix is boring: just alerts. Saved searches on Tyomarkkinatori, email alerts on Duunitori, that kind of thing. I realized I was the one forwarding them links every morning anyway, so I wrote a small bot that watches the boards and pushes matching jobs to Telegram within the hour.

That side project turned into huntly.fi and has already helped people to get a job in Finland.

How do you all handle it? Manual checking, alerts, or do you just rely on knowing someone?

Discussion 🎮 Would there be demand for a PC gaming café in the Helsinki metropolitan area? I’d love to hear local opinions.

Hi everyone!

I’m a young, ambitious former business college student, and during my studies I came up with an idea that I’ve recently started exploring more seriously: would there be enough demand for a PC gaming café in the Helsinki metropolitan area, where people could play together without everyone needing a powerful gaming PC at home?

I’m not committed to opening anything yet. Before taking the idea further, I want to understand the needs of local residents and find out whether this concept has real potential.

I’ve put together a survey asking about people’s interest in a PC gaming café, their preferred hourly pricing, how often they might visit, and a few other related topics.

The survey contains 15 questions and takes approximately 2–3 minutes to complete.
👉 Survey: [LINK]

I’d also really appreciate hearing your thoughts in the comments:
Do you think there’s a need for a PC gaming café in the Helsinki metropolitan area?
Would you visit one even if you already owned a gaming PC?
What would make you choose a gaming café over playing at home?

I’m genuinely interested in both positive and critical feedback. The goal is to understand whether this idea makes sense, rather than simply gather support for it.
Thanks to everyone who takes a couple of minutes to participate in the survey or share their thoughts! 😊

PSA/Advice PSA to black men in Helsinki (written by a black woman and NOT racist!)

Thanks for clicking. Anyone can read this. I just needed a hook.

Background: I have lived in Finland for more than five years and am a Finnish citizen. I am black, and my partner is white (native Finnish). We are two women, and my partner will be carrying.

My partner and I waited over a year in the public healthcare fertility treatment queue in Helsinki, only to find out that there aren’t any options for people with dark skin. Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) told us that many people have been in our situation, but they haven’t been able to offer suitable matches because they specifically do not have any donations from people with black skin. All we can do is raise awareness and wait. Increased awareness will also help other families.

All relevant information about donation can be found here: https://www.hus.fi/en/sperm-and-egg-bank Please share with anyone who may be interested! Even one share is helpful.

Things we already know / have heard (and my responses):

- Going through private healthcare will give more donor options.

(Yes, but this is not very accessible due to the additional costs.)

- Not everything is about race.

(Yes, but we naturally prefer the child shares physical traits from both of us. HUS matches parent characteristics whenever possible. However, of course we’ll love the child no matter what.)

- Finland has a low birth rate, and public resources should not be used to advance immigrant populations.

(Yes and no: 1) Everyone has the right to healthcare, and fertility treatment is part of that. 2) Someone who is half Finnish is still Finnish. 3) Finland needs more people to sustain the economy!)

- Can we ask someone we know?

(We don’t have anyone we can specifically ask, and we would prefer to remain anonymous. In public healthcare, both donors and receivers are anonymous. Our family and friends are also helping spread the word.)

- This is AI / a joke.

(I recently created this account to maintain anonymity as my previous Reddit account had my name in it. We have also printed flyers, which you may find around Helsinki. Would AI or a joke go this far?)

Please do not be cruel. We just want a family like everyone else. 🙏🏾 This is just a post to raise awareness. If you don’t agree, this post does not harm you in any way and leaving negative comments also raises awareness (though discouraged).

Thanks for engaging and enjoy the weekend! P.S.-Clocks change this Sunday.

Work & Education Relocating to Helsinki for a Microsoft L63 Role — Culture, WLB, and Expat Advice Needed

Hi everyone,

I’ll be relocating from India to join Microsoft as an L63 Commissioning Manager in Helsinki, Finland in the coming months.

For context, I am 36M with 13 years of engineering experience, a decade of which has been dedicated strictly to data centers, including a prior stint as an L5 Commissioning Engineer at Amazon.

Before I start, I would love to hear from current or former Microsofties about their experiences.

Specifically, I am curious about:

How would you describe the overall team culture, work-life balance, and operational pace compared to Amazon?

What is the standard return-to-office policy, and is there flexibility for occasional remote work for personal or family situations?

What are the core performance expectations for an L63 to ensure steady career growth without falling behind?

How seamless is the relocation process for expats, particularly regarding housing assistance and visa support for an accompanying spouse?

How essential is conversational Finnish for daily office dynamics, and is there any general advice you wish you knew before joining?

I understand experiences vary across teams and organizations, but I appreciate any insights you can share.

Thanks in advance!
