Seeking additional moderators
Hello all, /u/cuddleslapine has stepped down, and I could use some moderator assistance. I'd ideally like to add at least two additional moderators.
Requirements:
- History of positive posting in /r/hungarian
- Strong hungarian language skills (native speaker preferable, but not required)
Previous moderation experience is a plus. Please message me, or send a modmail if interested, and let me know why you would make a good moderator.

Kézírás_fordítás Help translating note on baptism record?
This is from my ggg-grandmother's baptism record from 1858. She was illegitimate. Her mother married a Racsek Tomas in 1859 - I see him mentioned here in the note, and I think I can make out a word at the end referring to legitimacy, but I can't tell if it's referring to the marriage or to the child (or both). Thank you!

Hogyan fordítanád le az easygoing-uneasy szópárost magyarra, egy olyan kontextusban, ahol egy kutyára van használva?

Kérdés Very specific ‘zik’ verb usage
Hi all,
As I get deeper into learning Hungarian, I’ve noticed people using very specific verbs that apply to just one activity. It seems like any word can become a verb.
Például:
- karatézik
- pizzázik
- koncertezik
- diplomázik
- taxizik
Stb
When is it okay to use these? If I’m speaking in a formal setting (job interview, with a consulate, whatever) would I avoid using these? Are they more casual?
So like:
Nyolckor taxival megyek a repülőtérre.
Or
Nyolckor taxizom a repülőtérre.

Hirdetés My attempt to learn Hungarian somehow turned into building a CarPlay language-learning app
My journey started with a simple goal: I wanted to learn Hungarian.
As I started learning, I found myself wanting a different way to practise. I wanted something that worked around my daily life, rather than having to sit down and dedicate time to studying.
Being a software developer, my solution was naturally to start building something myself.
It started as a web-based learning tool, but as I continued developing it, I kept thinking about all the time I spend driving. Why couldn't I use that time to practise Hungarian?
That idea eventually led me to build an iPhone app with CarPlay support, so I could listen to and practise vocabulary while driving.
What started as a personal Hungarian-learning project has now grown into LingoRove, supporting multiple languages, learning games, and Apple Watch.
But Hungarian is where this whole journey started, and I'm still learning it myself.
I'd really love some feedback from people who actually speak or are learning Hungarian.

Kérdés Shortened vowels
I've noticed that when certain suffixes are added to nouns, if the word has a long vowel it is shortened. Yet I've seen words with two long vowels and only one of the vowels is shortened? Could somebody go more in depth about what I need to know about this, because it is confusing me a little.

Segítségkérés Tv-show and music?
I did my first Duolingo course in Hungarian today.
The first time I entertained learning Hungarian was 2013 with the Eurovision entry Kedvesem. I love how it sounds.
It’s quite the language to master so I’m thinking I need more than just Duolingo.
Can you guys recommend movies, tv-shows and music for someone who’s learning Hungarian?

Kérdés Definite vs Indefinite Verbs: Mixed Objects?
Duolingo taught me that when the object of a transitive verb is engem or téged, the indefinite forms get used, and when the object is önt or őt, the definite forms get used. So látok téged, but látom őt. (And the same for minket+titeket vs önöket+őket.)
What happens if the object is both? Látok téged és őt? Látom téged és őt? Do you have to say Látok téged és látom őt?
Edit: Whoops, I forgot that -lak/-lek is a thing, and I'm curious how that comes into play here too. But to ask what I was originally trying to ask, I should have asked about Látsz engem és őt VS Látod engem és őt?

Hirdetés A Hungarian listening contrast: erősen / enyhén (free practice)
One contrast from our fictional Hungarian dialogue:
Nyeléskor erősen fáj, egyébként csak enyhén.
It hurts a lot when I swallow; otherwise only mildly.
Listen for erősen and enyhén in the full practice: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/POh8Q8X74B4
We made SziaMed, a completely free platform for everyday and medical Hungarian. It is FREE for everyone: https://sziamed.com/try
The cartoon visuals are AI-generated and the voices are synthetic. Independent Hungarian pronunciation review is pending. This is language practice, not medical advice.

Segítségkérés Help with lyrics!
youtu.beHey everyone!
Asking a question about one of my all time favorite Hungarian bands.
I know the first half of this song is a traditional tune called Gyertek Fiúk menjünk a kocsmába, but halfway (about 3 minutes), there are more lyrics that seem to be from a different song. Anyone know the lyrics for the second song or what its name may be? Or, is it even Hungarian?
It starts with what sounds like "Ayten Lale..."
Thanks!

Kérdés Hungarian and Netflix
When watching Netflix, if I turn on Hungarian subtitles, they pretty closely mimic the English word order. If I change the language to Hungarian, the spoken language is a much more natural spoken Hungarian (so word order is very different) and the Hungarian subtitles do not match the spoken Hungarian. My question then, is should I listen in Hungarian (and read the English subtitles?) or as someone that is still learning and can follow maybe half the spoken, should I listen in English and read the Hungarian ? Does it even matter??

Hirdetés Looking for Help in exchange for free Hungarian lessons
Hi all,
I am a Hungarian language teacher working on a new approach. I teach lessons in person, 1 on 1, and would be looking for one or two volunteers to be "guinea pigs".
In a nutshell, I am building a system that keeps track of the student's progress broken down to every vocabulary and grammar item. My goal is to keep the student's motivation alive by showing them, week after week, month after month, their progress in real numbers and percentages.
So, ideally, I would need two students who are willing to give this a go.
What you get: a free Hungarian lesson per week.
What I get: working material to succesfully develop my system.
We can meet weekly, ideally in central Budapest.
Feel free to contact me if you have more questions.
Alex

Kézírás_fordítás Help translating!
Hello everyone! My great grandmother was Hungarian and my Papa, her son, recently died over the summer. Looking through all of Papa’s old things we have found some Hungarian writing from his mother. Papa was the last one to know the language, and I wonder if anyone could help translate this for my family!

Kíváncsiság Looking for info on Hungarian word "Balászcocó" (unsure about spelling)
There's this word my family uses that was introduced by my Hungarian grandfather, so I'm fairly certain it's Hungarian. I don't know how it's spelled but if I go by pronounciation it should be along the lines of "Balászcocó". It is the name of a kind of poltergeist or scapegoat, so if some small but annoying thing like for example soup stains on the wall are discovered at home and nobody admits to be responsible for it, we just say "The Balászcocó did it!"
I can't find anything about it on the internet and unfortunately I can't ask my grandfather about it anymore. So I'm curious if anyone is familiar with it or if it's just a creation of my Nagypapa. And in any case, can this name be translated literally in some way? Köszi!
