General CS junior with barely any technical skills, no experience, and terrified I won't land an internship
I'm currently a junior majoring in Computer Science, and I'm genuinely terrified that I have no chance of getting an internship.
Whenever I talk to other CS students, everyone seems to have the same fear. But then they start listing everything on their resumes: previous internships, research, impressive personal projects, technical skills. And I just sit there thinking, how are YOU worried? Though of course I understand that it is completely valid to worry about this.
Meanwhile, I feel like I have absolutely nothing.
I go to a very small college where Computer Science is a relatively new major. And when I say new, I mean we have ONE professor for the entire department and only seven courses required for the major. Unfortunately, I feel like I've learned almost nothing from my classes. Most of what I've managed to do has been through ChatGPT or trying to teach myself.
I'm in my third year of a CS degree, and I don't even feel confident in basic Python. It's honestly embarrassing to admit that, but that's where I'm at.
The worst part is that I need to complete an internship in order to graduate. So this isn't just about wanting experience or making my resume look better. I literally need to find something.
And then there's networking. Everyone keeps saying, "Just network!" as if it's the easiest thing in the world. Reach out to people on LinkedIn, schedule coffee chats, build connections, ask for referrals. I know that's how a lot of opportunities happen, but I genuinely struggle with it. My college doesn't exactly help either. We don't have a strong CS alumni network, big recruiting events, or connections to tech companies.
I do apply to internships. A lot. I try reaching out to people and asking for referrals. I'm not just sitting around waiting for something to happen. But it feels like I'm competing against people who have had access to so many more resources and opportunities, and I don't even know how to catch up.
I know I have to take responsibility for my own learning, and I'm trying to. But it's overwhelming when you feel like you're starting from zero while everyone else is already miles ahead.
I guess I'm posting this because I'm scared, frustrated, and genuinely don't know what to do anymore.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation and actually managed to land an internship? Especially if you came from a small college with limited resources and didn't have an impressive resume or strong technical skills. What did you do to turn things around?
I'd really appreciate some realistic advice, not just "build projects and network."
